Are you for or against polygamy?

I myself am for it as long as it's fully consensual who am I to stop people from being happy? I suppose this could also go into if they should be able to marry each other or not (which I'm also for because of more or less the same reason I said before).

I am for it as long as everyone involved knows EXACTLY what they are getting into.

I mean really, I could argue, why for, but the bigger question is "why not"?

Depends on the specifics. I am more than for consenting adults to marry in whatever fashion they choose. It is their lives. On a religious matter, if their religion is okay with it, they should be able to be married under the eyes of their church. However, legally recognized multiple marriages, I am not for. Now, I am sure many would jump on me because I am an advocate for legally recognized homosexual marriages, so why not multiple marriages. It is not that I am against their lifestyle. I am for homosexual marriages because it makes homosexuals seen as equal citizens. They are given the same right to marry as everyone. But with marriage, there does come tax, insurance, etc benefits. Think of it like Green Card marriages. It is illegal to marry someone just to get them citizenship into the country. It is scamming the government. Any marriage can be manipulated to scam the government, but multiple marriage opens up the possibility to do it multiple times. Someone marrying multiple people just for insurance benefits or another addition to put on you tax forms every year. It is the potential of multiple fraud that I am against. So I guess let me rephrase my statement from before. Legally recognized marriage wouldn't be a problem for me, as it provides other important aspects like power of attorney, but I think that tax related benefits should be limited to only one marriage in the family. Any addition should NOT give those benefits.

Iv never even encountered such a person

thenumberone : Yeah. I mean, Mormons have been given that reputation, but it is actually not condoned in your average Mormon church. It is a very select minority that believe in polygamy in the Mormon church.

I don't think I can agree with polygamy being okay. I have never encountered a person in such a relationship in my life. Not to mention it would be hard to in my opinion to be married more than one person. I will be honest my religious believes state that a spouse should only be married to one spouse.  So that is my take on this subject (not to be offensive in any way)

Zlinqx :

I'm not against it, but at the same time I don't think it's best. Polygamy seems to subtract from the intimacy of marriage.

I am all for it, as long as everyone involved in the polygamous marriage is all right with it. The people involved have to be consenting, otherwise it is essentially cheating on a monogamous marriage. However, in general, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. It is even commonplace in some countries for monetary and populous issues, so why would it not be allowed? No one is being harmed. Well, I know the answer to why it is not allowed, but that is besides the point. It should be allowed, and I am all for it if some people want to enter a polygamous relationship.

I'm of the "whatever floats yer boat, mate" opinion. If some man wants to have multiple wives, or some woman wants to have multiple husbands, and as long as everyone in the equation is okay with it, then why not? Personally, I think the concept of polygamy is silly, and I would never invest in a polygamous relationship, but who am I to tell other consenting adults what they can or can't do with their marriage(s)?

I am apart of the live and let live thought camp. If everyone that is involved understands and accepts it then why should it be anyone elses business? Now I know it can effect the kids sometimes but that seems mainly because of how the public perceives them, witch is unfair for any kids involved. There as been a big and mostly successful campaign the last few years supporting gay marriage ( witch I think is right ) If they can why not these people???

happiness7 :

What is happiness? Is it simply a physical emotion or does it have to do with the well-being of the entire person?

I'm a Mormon, and I'm against it in the long-term.  Why we had polygamy in place in the early days of the Church I don't know.  But I do know polygamy can be difficult for all spouses involved.  Polygamy can become a juggling act, rather than real, meaningful bonding between husband and wife.  There have been legitimate reasons throughout the years for it to exist, but because of my belief in eternal families, I do not believe that polygamy is something that can or should be upheld long-term, especially not by force, as many break-off sects of the LDS Church have done.

Txgangsta : I would say it could be thought as in both ways that you mentioned, but maybe there are more ways you could think happiness is. Can you think of anything else happiness would be considered as? I think if people like something, then their in happiness and also what you said too.

I guess I'm neutral about it. My religion says nothing about it, and I have no reasons to hate it, but I myself find that something that I would never practice, but don't see why others shouldn't

I'm on train of people saying: "If the people involved know what they're doing, and everyone accepts it, then why not?"
Personally, i wouldn't do it. I think it does break the bond between a single husband and wife, but that's just me. I don't plan on doing it, but if you want to, who am i to stop you?

One of my friends is actually in a polygamous relationship and she and her husband are amazing. I've talked about the matter with her plenty of times and they can go out with other people and even bring new partners back home without hurting each other's feelings. They are such a perfect couple and a great example of mutual trust and understanding in a relationship. I've been in an open relationship before and it was absolutely awful, but perhaps with the right person it could work out just fine. Mutual rules are crucial in order for it to work.

I personally don't see any reason to be against it, although I find the idea strange. If it makes people happy to marry multiple people, let them do it. What right do I have to take away somebody's happiness for no reason? None. Nobody should be told who they can or can't marry or love. People who do that are in the wrong in my opinion.
