Hello everyone, Ro.kerr here! Yes, my next review is on a Pokémon game (which was inevitable lol). Today, I'll be doing a review of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team, which is quite possibly the best Pokémon spin-off in my honest opinion. Let's not waste anymore time and jump right into this review, starting off with the sound.
-Graphics-
Whenever it comes to making video game graphics for handheld games, Nintendo always ensures that the graphics are, at minimum, excellent, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team included. Everything ranging from the miniaturization of every move and the animation that goes with it to just simply walking around and observing the idle animations for each character is
very detailed. If 2D sprites and "movement" (that's really the only way I can put it) don't bother you when playing in a "3D" over world, then you should be fine with the graphics. (Not that there's anything super complicated about it. Just try the game, you'll see what I mean).
-Sound-
I'll say this about the sound in this game: It does a little bit more than just serve its purpose. Sure, each of the main quest dungeons have one theme (some of which are recycled, but it's not necessarily bad or too repetitive), but there are some situations that the music fits the mood and the current situation much better than other soundtracks. There are even some soundtracks that are exclusive to certain dungeons or events that happen only once, but still make quite an impact when it comes to engrossing the player within the game. Specifically, I like the Magma Cavern Pit music (especially considering the situation for your first visit there, this music suits the environment almost too well) and Sky Tower (This dungeon was referred to as "... a world above ours..." . With that in mind, this soundtrack truly inspired a feeling of awe and wonder). I also forgot to mention that many bosses share the same boss music. Personally, I'm okay with it since the boss music is good, but not spectacular. Whether it irks you that the same music is used for many bosses is up to you.
-Addictiveness-
"Wait, you rated this game a 9.3, but gave a 6 for addictiveness?! Explain yourself!" Okay, okay. I'll say this about how addictive the game really is. If you find the main series of Pokémon to be addictive, then you may find this game quite addictive. Personally, I found this game pretty addicting, seeing as how it's my 2nd or 3rd play through. Someone might be wondering "Then, why rate the addictiveness so low?". I gave it the lowest rating because once you have finished the main story, the post-game, and befriending every Pokémon (Yes, including gosh-darn KECLEON), you've experienced everything there is to experience in the game. "Well, duh!" What I mean is, that playing the game again might seem...pointless to some people, especially since the game has such longevity. I rated it low because:
1. I am a hypocrite who doesn't make sense, and
2. I feel that the addictiveness is mostly dependent on the individual. Some people will play the exact same thing, and others won't, which is absolutely fine in either case. But, looking at it from a non-biased point of view (or trying to, at least) I don't think there's too much of a chance of people playing it again. But that's just my take on it

-Story-
Someone might wonder: "Ro.kerr, if you're trying to be non-biased, why did this section get a perfect 10?". Easy! This game has the best story to come from Pokémon, ever. Let me elaborate on this a little bit. Assuming that you've played a Pokémon game, you may already know that you set out on a journey to be the best trainer, catch 'em all, etc etc. With Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, you start out your new adventure with a personality test, followed by being thrown into the world of Pokémon AS a Pokémon even though you were originally a human being. A little further into the game, you learn that the world of Pokémon is threatened with natural disaster. Although you and your partner are a rescue team to help other Pokémon in need of help, you'll have to figure out why these things are happening and why you're a Pokémon who is really a human, but can't remember anything about being a human (quite the conundrum, eh?). Now, here's the REAL reason why the Story has such a high rating. Simply put, the game is so engrossing that you become wrapped up in the main character being in the world of Pokémon and becoming wrapped up in all of the situations that happen to the characters. With your partner by your side, the two of you go through everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, together as a team. That includes things ranging from small everyday chatter to some situations involving life or death, and everything in-between. In my honest opinion, this game's story is THE highlight of this game and it is something that you must experience for yourself (WITHOUT using any sort of guide, of course).
-Depth-
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team has one main premise that it sticks to: Rescuing other Pokémon. Personally, I'm glad that the game offers a little bit of variety with the rescues they offer. For instance, one rescue may require you to find a specific Pokémon in a dungeon, while other rescues require you to bring a specific item to a specific Pokémon in a dungeon. The game developers made sure to add a little variety in the types of missions the game provides. The game offers new items to the Pokémon universe, a new perspective on Pokémon, a town square that provides everything you may need, and even Rescue Mail, where you can rescue your actual friend's team if they fall in a dungeon. There's also a LOT to offer for the post-game once you beat the main story.
-Difficulty-
Having just played through this game again, I can say that the game can be difficult, but only if you don't train enough or use your team's full potential. For instance, let's say the Pokémon you became was a water type, and you had to fight against an electric type boss. If you run in without the proper equipment, training, and/or moves, you'll get knocked out quite easily. But if you prepare yourself for a worst case scenario, link the right moves together in the right order, and level yourself decently, you won't have too much trouble against the main story bosses, even if you have a type disadvantage. However, once you start playing post-game, THAT is when the real difficulty kicks in. The last story dungeon is about 34 floors I believe, while in the post game, there are some dungeons that are 99 floors long (including the boss at the end. Much fun indeed...) There's even a dungeon that requires you to literally start at square one, and work your way up from scratch. All in all, if you don't find the main story difficult, that's perfectly fine and understandable, but do NOT underestimate the post-game.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team functions very well for the first of a spin-off series of games that pays more attention to the story and emotional aspect, which wasn't really present in other Pokémon games. If you can make it past its somewhat repetitive game play, you WILL enjoy this game.
Hope y'all enjoyed this review, let me know what you think of the game, or the review itself! I'll try and make these reviews as painless as possible
