I have had my ps2 slim for quite some time now but i thought that it wouldn't play ps1 games because of a ps1 game i bought from a store a while back but i wasn't sure. I just got a ps1 game in the mail today that i bought online and it turns out that i was right. It won't play ps1 games. It won't play ps2 games or read dvds that are pretty scratched. I was just wondering what is causing this and if it can be fixed.

bloodyb : I doubt there is. If it's not the disk that is not working, then the PS2 might simply be burned out.

First off, any version of the PS2 was thought to have an issue where playing DVD's caused the laser to become less sensitive. I would stop playing DVDs on it immediately before it won't play any games at all.

Also, there are some PSX games that were never backward compatible with the PS2 and many more that wouldn't work on the slim version. Here is a complete list of PSX games that won't work according to model number.

You might be able to pay Gamestop (or a similar retailer) to recalibrate the laser but I'm not sure if they do it anymore...

Zanderlex It's not that it won't play every game it's just ps1 games and really scratched ps2 and dvds that it won't play.

thephantombrain Thank your for that list. The legend of the dragoon game is actually the game that i ordered online and it freezes while it's on the title screen. It is on the list of the games that the ps2 has trouble playing. Also the gamestop here in town don't mess with any thing older than a ps3 now.

If you have the slim with the lid that pops up when you want to put the disc in and the "Disk Read Error"s get severe enough, here is a vid on how to adjust the laser potentiometer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmLKwRqQ0FA

This should be done as a last resort when you are certain that the PS2 should be playing a game but it won't.

Here is a key so you know which discs are CD and which are DVD
Black = Playstation game (CD)
Blue = CD Playstation 2 game
Gold = DVD or DVD Playstation 2 game
Silver = Music CD

The ps2 is supposed to play Ps1 games. I'm sorry to hear about your situation, mate. You might be out of luck. Your best bet would be to go to Gamestop and buy a used ps2 for like $30 or something.

If I remember correctly, not all PS2's were backwards compatible. I believe after a certain point they quit making them that way. I say this because when I pulled up my PS2 serial Number, the results said it was one of the early PS2's, and one that played PSX games as well.

I could be wrong, as I never researched it beyond that.

 That is very odd I have a fat PS2 but it plays PS1 games just fine. In fact, the other day I beat Mortal Kombat Trilogy with not one single glitch. But I think the DVD thing is burned out. Because that's the only way PS1 can be played on PS2. They are both DVD run.

PS2 is probably burned out. Or the DVD's are to scratched up. Here in holland you can fix it at game mania. You can probably fix scratches at gamestop or what not. A PS2 is not the strongest system even tough people say it is.  A ps2 can play a PS1 game. I played CTR a few weeks back on my PS2.

This is because your PS2 is old. You're going to have to get a new one. They are made to burn out eventually.

Here's a list of PS1 games that don't work on PS2 systems.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_games_incompatible_with_PlayStation_2

You need a PS1 memory card to save and whatnot, but it should work.

The PS2 was naturally made to play PS1 games, but because of developers being different and whatnot with games, some games aren't as functional, or don't work at all.

Your PS2's laser is infunctional, and thephantombrain's idea is a good suggestion, and you could also try either dissecting your PS2 or, best yet, get another PS2.
