After I entered the Cadmium Gym, the gym leader suddenly gave me the badge explaining that the Osmium President (AKA zanderlex) is letting all trainers get their 1st badge right away. While I pondered this odd decision, I had Growlithe use Bite on PreludeWish's Marshtomp

zanderlex : I'd appreciate it if you dealt with the wild pokemon at the same time as you update exp. There are a few of us, myself included, that have been wild hunting for a while now.
