Alright so nowadays people say they aren't dating, but they are "talking." I am an amateur when it comes to relationships, so if you can explain this to me I would be very appreciative.

It is ambiguous to be ambiguous.  It can mean people are dating and they aren't defining it as dating.  It can mean people are hooking up, from just making out every now and then to having sex.  It can mean people chat and text and email each other regularly and flirt but they are both too afraid to actually ask each other out.

Talking is something that people use to say they like another person and they find time with each other but they're not committed to a relationship.  They don't want to label themselves in case something else pops up that's better but they want to show that they are desirable because someone else is picking them to hang out, spend time, etc.

Why do people have to define relationships?  That's the real question.  Why can't one just spend time with someone and enjoy it?

Before one old girlfriend of mine and me were more involved, we used to meet each other to go on for long walks, long conversations and this kind of things, getting to know each other. According to her these were not "dates" but "special time". I did not care what they were called. I was happy and in the end they lead in to a long relationship.

So I guess it is just lingo what you are actually doing if there are affections and you are just sort of trying out to see what it leads to. It is the games people play no matter what they call it. To be honest I have never been on a "date" ever with anyone who did not happen to be an actual girlfriend. So to tell the truth, what does the whole thing to me is also sort of elusive but I think I get the point.
