So one thing that's been bothering me a LOT lately is how behind I seem to be on current events. I mean, it's not like I'm stuck in the past or anything, but often if someone mentions something current I have to run away and google before I can face them with a coherent argument.

I'd really like to change that. So I'd like to ask the (amazing) people here, how do you stay updated with current events and the world around you?

(also if there's another thread like this I'd love it if someone could shoot me a link)

I use news sites. I never really watch the news, they seem to only show and say what they want, not what really happens.

I would just browse around news sites or watch the news (if that is your only option) at least every other day (once a week at the very least). Alot of stuff happens every day, its hard to keep up with everything that is going on world wide, lately I have just been focusing on local matters, due to lack of time and energy.

The only way I'm ever updated on real world events, no, video games release info does not count, is by The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Other than those two shows, I only get updated by hearing people talk about things that happen, although at a high school, most of what's said isn't exactly national newsworthy.

Every once in a while, I like to go to Bing because at the very bottom of the page, they have a list of headlines with pictures for a bunch of events that are taking place. Some of these things are small, some of them are entertainment, but some of them are the big news stories so I would suggest that you check it out every once in a while because it might help.

GenesisJunkie : Yeah. I've gotta agree with you on the whole media thing. Every time I turn on the news it's just a bunch of terrible accidents followed by a puppy story, or something equally cute.

thelastrequim : Dude. I'm pretty sure you and I have an equal love for Colbert and Stewart. They're pretty much freakin perfect (am I right!?). But you know, sometimes it's nice to learn something about the world without it being coated in a heaping layer of sarcasm. It's not that what they're saying is wrong, it's just not citable or quotable if you're trying to get a point across. (but they're still totally my guilty information pleasure).

Brigand : What?!? You actually READ newspapers?! What is this printed witchcraft?! No but seriously thanks for the website! I'll be sure to check it out. It'll be a nice change to read international news that's not written from the perspective of americans.

I use news sites, such as Fox News, NBC, Google News and Yahoo news. However, I do things different. When a story comes out I'm one of those people that check the facts. Due to how biased the news outlet can be. Still, I stay up to date by checking those sites in the morning and before I go to bed.

CNN.com

I rarely click on anything or read anything, but I'll read titles in the "The Latest" section on the left (you might have to scroll down a little bit to find it). If something looks interesting, I'll read it. Otherwise, it just takes me 20-30 seconds to get caught up.

I don't keep up, really. I just hear stuff from my grandfather, who watches the news almost religiously.  I prefer to stay away from the stupidity of mankind. Also, most of the sources don't tell you about the world around you, just what Kim Kardashian and Kanye West named their baby.

I browse fb news feed, look at twitter, then visit yahoo once in awhile, not to mention I also keep my television opened just for the sake of having some noise in my room aside from the headset sounds. It just so happens that whenever I open it at night, the news program is airing.

I guess I could give a recomendation to the Guardian too.

http://www.theguardian.com/uk

I used to read the print version and it was pretty unbiased and some good reporting there in my eye.

I watch stations like CBC and CP24 (that station is local to Toronto). Usually they'll be reporting on what's relevant.......... usually. I also like to go to cnn.com. There i can see all of the news i need if i don't have acess to a TV.

I have a website called www.fark.com that has news items.  It has real news articles from around the world but the gag is they are submitted with jokes for headlines.
It's great to follow what's happening.  I know everything before the radio or tv news talks about it.
