Nintendo's online services for the Wii and the DS are purportedly going to be shutting down on May 20. This means no more online play for either console (for many games), as well as the shutting down of some other features. This is going to be a big hit for many people (I think), myself included. I'm going to miss playing Mario Kart online. Ah well, at least there will be a few features left. Aw, really?

I checked out the article. This sucks. 

Luckily I don't play many online multiplier Wii games besides Mario Kart. And I never used the internet on my DS anyway.

I do, however, agree with many of the comments in the article. It does feel too soon. 

It unfortunate but it's a basic new-generation thing. When a new generation of console(s) comes out it's logical that they'd start shutting down features from the previous generation in order to prompt people to move onto the new generation.

Yeah, I got that message on my Wii... That really sucks, you know? Sony never did that... at least I don't think they did. Pretty much the only game I ever used with WFC was Mario Kart Wii, though. But my stupid Wii won't even use WiiConnect24 anymore anyways, and I changed from MKWii to CTGP-R...

But still. Maybe they'll be kind enough to leave the Mario Kart Wii servers up, 'cause that game has a crazy amount of online-players. But that also means no more online Brawl... I know, no one ever played it online, but it was nice to play online with a certain friend every once in awhile.

TheFadedWarrior : Sadly, one of the games shutting down will be Mario Kart Wii, the majority of games losing functionality are going to be Nintendo's first party games. As for the Sony thing, I don't think they ever announced a total shutdown all at once, but their games do lose online functionality after a certain amount of time, as with most other console games.

Pokemon fans are going to be hit because I hear that there are still a lot of people playing generation 5 games and they won't be able to do much anymore once this is taken into affect.

zanderlex : Yeah, Pokemon fans are going to take a really big hit, under the list of affected games Pokémon Black Version, Pokémon Black Version 2, Pokémon Conquest, Pokémon Diamond, Pokémon HeartGold Version, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Pokémon Pearl, Pokémon Platinum Version, Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, Pokémon SoulSilver Version, Pokémon White Version, Pokémon White Version 2 are all going to lose functionality. Anyone that wants to get their online battle/trade fix better do it soon before its too late.

Its understandable though you can't keep em up forever and the want for people to buy the next console just adds to it 

sop281 : Man, only 2 and a half months left of the Wii.. I always liked this game called Mario Kart Wii... I was so professional and has 9999 VR.

Now I got to make the best of the last days of the Wii, and the DS. I really don't get why they have to do such cruel, punishment to us.

I hope they cancel or extend it.

Black Bot : Unfortunately, what Nintendo is doing is a necessary evil. Nintendo doesn't charge for its online services (as far as I know) and so they simply cannot afford to keep the service up much longer on the older systems. Besides, it is also in their best interest to shut down the servers for the older consoles so that fans will move onto the newer systems. The 3DS is doing pretty well considering its competitor, the PS Vita, is doing significantly worse. However, Nintendo's Wii U is not doing so well, and they need more sales for it. This is only the natural progression for consoles, so while it may seem depressing, it simply has to happen eventually. 

I know, I read about it a few days ago on Nintendo's official site. That really sucks that they're getting rid of Wi-Fi support for the Wii and DS after almost 9 years (I'm pretty sure 2005 was when they introduced it). Oh well, I guess I'll have to try and make the most of the 2 1/2 months left to use it. I didn't use it a lot, but I did enjoy playing Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart DS, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl with other players sometimes (instead of the usual computer players). Since the next generation of Nintendo consoles have been out for a while, I guess they're trying to get people to move on to the newer systems if they want to play games online.

sop281 : It is pretty stupid seeing that Nintendo does this. People  STILL play online a lot. It REALLY sucks only having 2 and a half months left before they pull the plug..

They should be ashamed. I don't get why they did that sop.

Black Bot : Like I said, it really is unfortunate, but it has to happen. Nintendo doesn't want to ruin anyone's fun by taking down the servers, but they simply cannot afford to keep the old game servers up on their old consoles when they need people to move onto the new consoles, as well as paying upkeep for the servers on the new consoles. It's a really expensive process.

deg2000 : I am very serious, and yeah, while it may not be "fair", it has to happen. Despite people coming late to the game, and only just recently acquiring their own Wii, Nintendo would have to shutdown the servers eventually simply because it would cost too much to keep everything running. Nintendo is actually making a very wise decision here, and while many people will be saddened by the functionality loss, Nintendo will continue to live, and hey, there will always be the new consoles and games in the future.

This effects me very little. The only modern day Nintendo console I actually own is a Wii and that's collecting dust in my basement. I've never really been a fan of their consoles or handhelds so I never really played online at all. I'm sure it would have been fun to play Mario Kart with people but it's not a huge blow for me. I'm more on the Playstation and PC side of things when it comes to online gaming and games in general.

This isn't really a big deal, I knew it was going to happen some day.

I don't use my Wii for internet purposes, I play games with online on it. My PS3 and 360 already do that better.
