Heya GUYS,It is i relinquish,The Psychotic reviewer,Although today i guess i won't really be reviewing anything, instead i am going to look at the history and progression of the ghost type Pokemon,As they are one of my favorite types. And they are quite interesting in my oh so humble opinion,So lets get this started with a little bit of introduction ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ Oh ghost types,Alot of people i know refer to ghost type Pokemon as oddballs,Some even call them a mix of psychic and dark type Pokemon,And after using a few of them,And looking at every single ghost type game freak has ever made...its a bit hard for me to disagree,Alot of ghost types combine elements from many different Pokemon types,And use it in there own unique way,Prime example. Gengar Gengar is loved in the casual Community,And in the competitive community,Its loved by the casual because well...i guess they just likes its look,And the competitive guys love it because they say and i quote "It can fill in any roll" It can stay on the offence,Or it can stay on the defense,It can get rid of anything quickly,It can sweep an entire team,Whatever that means as i am not really a competitive player,I say that in the sense that i don't play against other people most of the time,I just know alot about the Pokemon,Alright enough explanation,ON TO THE OVERVIEW. Gen 1 ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Now the ghost types did not really get...the best start in gen 1,As there where only 3 of them,Those are- Gastly Haunter Gengar And even though they are all technically the same thing,I guess i have to judge them,First of all Gastly is...rather weak,However haunter is MUCH better,And is actually very effective,Finally we have gengar,The Pokemon that every kid in my school went nuts over and tried to get, fortunately i was one of the lucky few that got one,Ah i remember the old days of me walking in the class,And i beat everyone with that Gengar,Swagger in my step,Bravado in my head,Sadly those days are just forgotten memory's and there are actually better ghost types out there,However i will get to that later,Now the moves of the original ghost types. Confuse ray. Lick Night shade .....Rather weak,Confuse ray is not that good of a move,Lick is decent,And night shade gets more powerful as the user levels up,So i suppose you could argue that it would be better near the end of the game,And it is very hard to disagree,So i guess its technically good. Overall in gen 1 the ghost types had a very rough start,The only thing that really saved it was Gengar,However lets see how they fair in gen 2.. Gen 2 ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ Ah yes,The glory days of gen 2,New region new Pokemon new gyms new rival,AND NEW GHOST TYPES,And after these games came out,People thought game freak had no care what so ever for this type,So lets see why. Misdreavus. Relinquish: That's it...?That's it? There has to be more right? Look over the list again Death the kid: Nope that's everything. Relinquish: Huh...okay. Yeah people thought game freak went INSANE,And remember at the begging where i said "AND NEW GHOST TYPES" Well i should have said NEW,ghost TYPE,Seriously they only gave this type 1 new Pokemon...1,And Misdreavus may not be that bad of a Pokemon,In fact i would say its a rather decent one,But still come on game freak...what are you doing? Very well the new Pokemon are an utter Failure,But lets see the new moves shall we? Curse. Destiny Bond. Nightmare. Shadow ball. Spite. Alright...well at least they tried,Seriously at least they gave us some decent-good moves,Seriously not one of these are bad,Curse is...risky yet effective if used right,Destiny bond is somewhat effective,But not something i recommend,Nightmare is once again risky,But if it works out,You will LOVE IT,Shadow ball provides decent damage,And spite is...not really worth using most of the time and is very situational. In gen 2 the ghost types did possibly worse then gen 1,It provided 1 new ghost type,And a few good moves,However i would not call this a complete failure,But it comes pretty PRETTY CLOSE,So lets see what game freak would do in gen 3 Gen 3 ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ OH GAMEFREAK,You see gamefreak is known for getting away with ALOT of stuff when it comes to there Pokemon games,But getting away with the ghost types...Was not something they could get away with,This wasn't something you could just sneak under the rug and pretend it never happened,Alot of people (Including myself) Were PISSED with the ghost types,Or should i say ghost TYPE,Pokemon in gold and silver,However this is where game freak actually tried to put in some effort with these things,So lets see what they have up there sleeves now. Shuppet. Banette. Duskull. Duscolps. Shedninja. Sableye. Finally some freaking EFFORT,Now lets take a look at these,And they are...somewhat lacking,I mean i appreciate the New ghost types but these guys are not the best,Shuppet is somewhat effective at the start,However when it turns into a banette,That is when it gets very good.Duskull and Duscolps and i have a very love/hate relationship,I love it...but its pretty bad in my oh so humble opinion. Shedninja,Despite what many people say is rather effective,As it does have provide a good addition to your party. And sableye...well..i know alot of people like it,But i cannot stand it,In fact i would go as far as saying i despise it,Because right when you get it,You think its cool and rare and powerful,But its not...its really...really...not. Moveset time,How lovely...massive amounts of sarcasm has been used. Astonish. Grudge (Hate the movies) Shadow Punch. Okay i am going to be honest with you.Shadow punch is the only effective move here,Astonish is weak and should NEVER be used unless you absolutely have to,And grudge seems promising and effective,But its not. In the end gen 3 introduced a decent amount of ghost types (Even though alot of them are bad-decent in my opinion) and the moves well...you already know about how i think of them,Gen 3 tried its hardest to make ghost types better,And in many respects did do,But also in many respects they failed,And in my opinion,The only things worth mentioning here is Banette,Shedninja,And shadow punch,Overall i give it credit for trying. All i can do is hope they get better in gen 4. Gen 4 .......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Gen 4 was a tricky time for game freak,Alot of the fan base and hype died down,And they tried there best to get them back,So this is what they decided to do,Bring back old Pokemon,And give them new evolution's,And in my opinion that was a very smart idea,However that idea plays out good in there head,Lets see how this plays out when they attempt to execute there idea. Mismagius. Dusknoir. Drifloon. Drifblim. Giratina. Froslass. Rotom. Spiritomb *Claps* Good job game freak.Good job,This is where game freak got there A GAME ON,And these Pokemon are freaking awesome,So lets look at them. Mismagius (Alongside Gengar) Is one of my favorite ghost type Pokemon,And while it may not be great,However it is still effective,Dusknoir is not the best,However it is a MASSIVE improvement from its predecessors. Drifloon and Drifblim are not one of my favorites,However They are not bad Pokemon,Giratina is by far MY FAVORITE GHOST TYPE,And my favorite legendary,it is powerful and it is awesome,Froslass is effective,And rotom in many respects is a good Pokemon.Oh yeah spiritomb is over rated. Oh moveset we meet again. Ominous wind. Shadow claw. Shadow force. Shadow sneak. These moves are all good...done. You know why? everything starts with shadow,And Ominous wind is awesome. Gen 4 gave some massive upgrades to the ghost type Pokemon,However in some areas they are a bit lacking,Lets see how they follow this up. Gen 5 ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Alot of people (including me) PRAISED game freak for doing the ghost type some justice,But now its time to see if they can top there work in gen 4,Or if they just sink it into oblivion. Yamask Cofagrigus. Litwick Lampent. Chandelure. Frillish Jellicent. Golet Golurk. This is good but...i think we all know what's going to happen in the moveset...whatever lets just see how these guys fair,Yamask and Cofagrigus are oddballs, but there pretty fun to use,Litwick Lampent and Chandelure are effective,Frillish and Jellicent are both good,Golet is a pain to level,But its worth it in order to get a Golurk,These guys are good. Moveset...entertain me. Hex. Really...? Really....? This move blows moving on. Gen 5 introduced a MASSIVE amount of new Pokemon,However in some areas it still fails, *cough* Moveset *cough* but now its time for the final gen...until about 3 more years. Gen 6 ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. Are journey through these grotesque ghouls is nearing an end,So...please don't suck. Phantump. Trevenant. Pumpkaboo. Gourgeist. Honedge Doublade Aegislash Alright What an improvement. Phantump and trevenant are decent same with Pumpkaboo (funny name) And Gorgeist. Honedge Doublade and Aegislash are all effective in there own right,They all seem good,But they for some reason feel like there copying each other... Moveset...ugh lets get this over with. Phantom force Trick -or-Treat Phantom force is one of the most powerful ghost type moves ever,And trick or treat is...stupid Gen 6 introduced a good bit of new Pokemon,And 1 great ghost type move,Along with another that really sucks,Not the best time for the ghost type but ultimately not the worst. Final thoughts .......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... And that's the ghost types,And they are...well i think Fullmetal alchemist said it best Human kind can not gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain something of equal value must be lost. You see there just not..balanced,Every time it either gives to many moves and to little Pokemon,Or to many Pokemon with to little Moves,It knows what its trying to do,But it does not execute it right, Every time it trys to do something new,Something else is lost,And that is not very good,However after gen 3 you can tell the type is improving massively,And it does not take to many leaps backwards like some other types,Overall its not the best type,But it is pretty fun to use, and i hope to see them get better later on. R.I.P Ghost types...Get the joke..? Oh you do its just not funny. Oh yes head down below for comedy. ![]() EXTRA ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ Relinquish: So kid uh... can i borrow your weapons? Death the kid: Of course not,I am the only one who can wield Liz and Patty,Why do you need them anyway? Relinquish:I want to kill who ever is in charge of making these ghost types. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ Personally I have always thought ghost types were pretty cool, especially like host and steel or ghost and dragon like Giratina, those are just some cool ghost type combinations that I think are cool. It is a shame there are so few as far as ghost types go though, hopefully they will come up with more good ideas for ghost types in later games. hey are both eerie, mystical and they have some good moves like one of the newer ones you mentioned, phantom force. Ghosts types have really come a long way and they have a lot better moves and some cool evolutions as well, one thing I have noticed are the summaries or pokedex entries they have, the ones for haunter and lampent and some of the other ghost types are a little creepy and dark, but cool at the same time in my opinion. Nice job on the overview though, keep up the great work man! |
