I'm near Detroit where the Detroit Red Wings NHL team lost a star to injury.  He chose to play for his country during the Olympics.  They didn't pay him money, it was for pride and he already competed in prior Olympics and even won a gold medal.  Now, he's getting paid millions to play hockey and got hurt and can't finish the season.  The Red Wings are in serious trouble and they're struggling to make the play-offs.

Should pros who are getting paid by teams to stay healthy run off and play in the Olympics or other events like World Baseball Classics?

Well, if the "Pros" don't play then who will? I don't want to watch a bunch of no-name amateurs compete. Just because there is a league for a sport shouldn't exclude those people from competing.

I do think that if a GM wants to restrict a player or 2 from the team they should be allowed. It's a tough balance though.

Also, I thought Zetterberg was already hurt and it got worse during the olympics.... maybe I was thinking of someone else.

I think the Olympics is much more of an important event than sports leagues period. But that doesn't matter really. I don't think there should be some league rule against it. That should just be up to the owners of the teams. They have the right to put whatever (legal things) they want in their contracts for their players. If they want to include a clause that prohibits them form competing in the Olympics, that is between the owner and the player who signs it. If they sign that contract, they can't. If the Olympics is too important to you, don't sign the contract and go somewhere else. But that should be handled at the discretion of the individual teams. Not some official league rule.

geeogree : It was Zetterberg I was talking about.  He was tweaked up and injured.  Two weeks of rehab and strength training would have done him well.  Instead he reinjured himself and the Wings are in trouble.

And pro teams are giving these players millions.  They get nothing for the Olympic teams.  Rather they aren't supposed to.

After these Olympics, I feel that NHL players shouldn't be going in the Olympics. Especially when you see huge players like Zetterberg, Tavares, and other players going down, and then the NHL owners are stuck with the bill, it frustrates me. Now, yeah, the Olympics seem like they wouldn't do as well, but I feel if the NHL GMs don't want their players, who are on contract with their respective NHL teams, should be able to say they can't go. Or, they could just push hockey with the summer games, and this probably wouldn't be a problem at all.

geeogree : Z definitely 100%, but was good enough to play.
