Hey guys. So today, I'll be continuing on with my Sonic hacks marathon reviews and looks like I bumped into another Sonic 1 hack and I must say that I liked this game for many reasons, which I will explain. Anyways, let's go ahead and start right onto the review!

Intro:

So, to basically explain it, it is obviously a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 1 for the Sega genesis. (No, duh) It features graphic changes (about everything for the graphics were changed) and zone changes (most of them are almost like new zones but still a bit similar to the original zones). It also appears to have a bit of an enhanced gameplay experience. Also, as for the title, it completely relates to the story of this game (which I will explain in the story portion of this game). And yea, surprisingly the story was changed too. Anyways, Let's go ahead and dive in deeper to this Sonic 1 hack!

Gameplay: 9

Alright, let's go ahead and start off with the gameplay like usual. (Basically the most significant thing about Sonic games) So, I actually found the gameplay to be pretty good in this Sonic 1 hack. There were basically about 3 factors that made the gameplay pretty nice.

The first factor that I'll start off with will be the special abilities. So, you can obviously run and jump like usual. Also, this Sonic 1 hack includes the Sonic 2 spin dash move (by simply holding the down key while standing on the ground and tap the jump key to charge your speed then let go to blast off! No, duh) I usually like it when Sonic games/hacks would include the spin dash move since I find it really fun and useful in many cases in many areas in the acts and zones. Like, if your having trouble running up a hill, you can do the spin dash or if you simply want to just move fast while destroying the badniks in your path... etc. You guys who played Sonic games before would know. Anyways, now the next really awesome move that I like is the air-dash and homing attack. To do that, you just simply press the jump button while you are in mid-air. If there are no badniks nor any monitors in your way, you will simply do an air-dash and just dash forward in the air at a pretty high speed, instantly and yes, this can be abused since you can keep on doing it as much as you want. And if you were to do it while there are badniks or monitors nearby, you will dash right into them instantly and very fast to destroy them. You can keep on doing it badnik after badnik (or monitor after monitor) while you are in the air. This is definitely a move that I enjoy doing since it is very fun to be enable to dash in the air very fast and easily hit badniks or monitors with the homing attack as much as you want!

The second factor is the physics. So, when you jump and move around at first, it seems pretty much like Sonic 1, right? But, when you run down in the steep area or run very fast after you just landed from the air-dash, you will notice that you will run faster and faster without having to roll and normally in Sonic 1, you would run in the same constant speed no matter what unless you roll. So, yes, you can notice a pretty good change in the physics of this Sonic 1 hack. A bit similar to sonic 2 or 3's physics.

The third and last factor is the zones. They were all altered or at least most of them. They are really different from the original zones. I must say, they are modified and nearly flawless and awesome. I always love to discover new zones. Not sure what else to say here. Thats about it for the gameplay!

Graphics: 8

About typically everything of the graphics were changed. Let's go ahead and try to talk about some things about the graphics. Firstly, the Sonic sprites seemed to have been modified. Well, he does look like himself, but the color of his fur appeared to have been changed. His fur color seems to be more dark blue-ish than light blue-ish in the original game. I guess I'll have to say that it looks good and he seems to be fitting more in the zones with that fur color. Now, let's go ahead and talk about the zones. So, they were all modified in appearance. Mostly their colors were modified. I'll have to say that I actually sort of like their new appearance. It gives you a pretty different experience compared to the original. Like, let's talk about the first zone. So, it pretty much looks like green hill zone, but with different colors. It seems to be a lot darker than the original. More... Night-ish, I guess. The ground is dark blue instead of bright green and also dark purple instead of bright yellow/brownish. The same thing with the trees. The river is a lot darker than original and the sky is really dark blue, which looks pretty cool I guess. It makes the zone feel more night-like, but yet somewhat creepy since it seems like a creepy night instead of some beautiful good night like the original star light zone. All the other zones were also modified a bit similar like how green hill zone was modified. Simply had color changes, but they were pretty good changes though. The only small flaw I can point out is that it is just not very vivid or accurate. I wouldn't say that it is fuzzy (it's not fuzzy at all), but the colors were just modified and just a bit too smooth, kind of. It needs somewhat more of a little bit of contrasting colors just to look more catchy, but regardless, it is still very catchy and well done though. Thats is about it for the graphics portion in my review.

Sound: 9

Well, about typically everything was modified, just except for the sound! XD From what I have seen after I played this Sonic 1 hack, I did not see any changes in the sound effects nor did I see any changes in the background music. All is pretty much like original for the sound. But still, I do like the original Sonic sounds and background music the best since a lot of the modified background musics would usually just mess up because they are either very unfitting, too repetitive, or simply just low quality and boring. However, I never found the original background musics repetitive or boring. Also, one pretty good thing is that despite all of the graphic changes and appearances in the zones, they still fit perfectly (or at least almost perfect) with the original background musics! I mean, like having the green hill zone background music in an area that looks like green hill zone but dark still fits in pretty good, but if it was spooky or scary, then it wouldn't really fit in since green hill zone is more of a happy zone. Well, yea, that is about it for the sounds.

Addictiveness: 9

I must say that I find this game pretty addictive, I guess. Why? Mostly because of how the zones are different and just something you would want to explore and have fun in. I mean, it does get boring (a little at times) when you literally keep on playing the original zones so many times until you literally memorize the whole zone, right? Well, as for these zones in this sonic hack, it is pretty hard to memorize and remember due to the challenges and slightly longer length of the zones. And mostly because I haven't played it many times as I have played the original zones (Yet?). It's also pretty fun and addicting to continuously keep playing with the air-dash move and just keep dashing forward in the air quickly and instantly. It's fun and abusive! Especially when you do the homing attack to destroy everything that is in your way! Well.... Yea, thats about it for the addictiveness.

Story: 8. Whoa, what?

Yea, indeed, I must say that I am surprised. Very surprised. This is probably the first time I see a nice story change in a Sonic hack. Normally, that is left unchanged and just left as the simple and overused story of simply defeating Dr. Eggman. However, for this one, basically takes place right after Sonic Generations. When Classic Sonic jumps right back in to the void to return back into his own time, Dr. Eggman actually sees a void portal, however, he wasn't enabled to fit through it so he shot and blasted the portal instead in a failing attempt to hurt classic Sonic which thus distorts the void and messes up classic Sonic's time. He does return to his own time, but it is pretty much altered and different due to the distortion. Yea and afterwards, it simply continues on with the old Sonic story of simply defeating Dr. Eggman, I guess. However, none of these stories really show up in the game itself, they are just based off the description of this Sonic hack. But still, I must say, "Cool story, bro". I mean, it is a pretty good idea to make a continuation of a story off another Sonic game (especially a modern sonic game like Sonic generations) and I find it somewhat interesting and a bit amusing. At least a lot better than original, thats about it for the story.

Depth: 9

Well, I guess I have to say that this game does offer quite an amount of depth. Firstly, it offers it's new story that I just explained. Secondly, It also offers modified Sonic 1 zones that provides an different experience of the zones since it feels almost like new zones that I have never played before. Thirdly, everything of the graphics of this Sonic 1 hack has been modified. And lastly, just like the original, there are no special options other than the level select screen. (Simply press up, down, left, right, then press A + enter after hearing the ring sound effect). Also, an extra thing to mention is that all of the zones were pretty much renamed to completely different names.

Green hill zone was renamed to Dark Plains zone. Marble zone was renamed to Magma Ruin Zone. Springyard zone was renamed to Pinball pike zone. Labyrinth zone was renamed to Hydroruin. Star light zone was renamed to Neggalopolis zone (lol. I have no idea how someone can come up with a name like that. XD) Scrap Brain zone was renamed to Death Gadget zone. (Wha?) Last but not least, final zone was renamed to Chaos Machine zone. Well, yea, that even shows more depth to how the game was even more different than original. Majority of the new zone names pretty much seemed like average zone names to me, but they are pretty decent. I guess it's somewhat cool. Also, don't forget that you can do the spin dash, air-dash, and homing attack in this Sonic 1 hack, also, do you know that those special moves makes it even more like sonic generations? Yep, and it relates to the story of it too! Thats about it for the depth.

Difficulty: 9

Yea, now, I have to say that I also find this game somewhat hard at times. Like for example, look at the first boss. Just... Dang. Literally the 1 platforms that you need to stand on to be able to hit Dr. Eggman is almost just out of reach and the only way to you can reach it is to jump about the swinging platform in the middle of the arena. And that platform literally swings so close to the swinging wrecking ball. As in, I will literally manage to lose my rings more than 60% of the time I'm fighting the boss. Not only that, there are spikes in the middle of the arena too. The way I can easily defeat him is to have the invincibility power up and then jump on the spikes to be able to hit Dr. Eggman. Also, at times when you hit a checkpoint, there are literally no rings nearby and then there is something challenging to go through. So, if you die, you will comeback to the checkpoint and be forced to go through the hard challenge with 0 rings. Like in the modified marble zone, there are swinging platforms and crushers everywhere and some lava beneath you, and you have 0 rings if you previously died and returned back to the checkpoint. Geesh. XD

OVERALL: 9

Thats about it for my review. I hope you guys liked it. Thanks for reading!

mohammedroxx3 : Well all I can say about this review is "Wow, what a review!" and I mean that in the ultimately best possible way, and I have said that, not just because you've given my hack a decent rating.  No seriously! And when I saw that there was a review about my hack, I thought OMG! XD

You have given an extensively detailed review containing what parts were good, what you liked, and the criticism, and mixing all that together, you have created a non-biased, well-balanced review.

I was almost crying with laughter when I saw "Star light zone was renamed to Neggalopolis zone (lol. I have no idea how someone can come up with a name like that. XD)"  I surely hope you were meaning that in a good way!
I must admit though Neggalopolis is definitely a mouthful to say, for *SPOILER ALERT!* v4.0, I am tempted of changing the name of the zone, and maybe a few others, to reduce the "sonic generic" like sounding to the names.
Then after that line, I saw "Scrap Brain zone was renamed to Death Gadget zone. (Wha?)", I thought it sounds cool.

Now for sound, yes all of releases have had no music modifications, except for adding the sounds to spin-dash and  homing/jump dash, but *AGAIN SPOILER ALERT* for the next release ALL sounds will be upgraded to the Z80 sound driver, as used for Sonic 3 & Knuckles, plus some extended modifications and there WILL BE NEW MUSIC! There will many many other modifications!

For anyone else who's reading this I haven't got a clue for when I am going to release my new version, but it's going be a longer duration compared to previous releases, but it'll be definitely before SAGE 2014, as I'm going to completely finalize it, for it will be the final major release of the game!

Anyway, I'm rabbiting on, overall about this review, it's very detailed, it's easy to read, it's fun to read, yeah there's a couple of typo's and very minor mistakes with punctuation, by that I don't mean the "yea"'s, etc. XD But those aren't exactly noticeable.

And lastly I'm glad you've had a good experience with my hack, and hopefully you'll have an even better experience with v4.0, when It's released that is.

Nice one!!
