Derek Jeter announced in a Facebook post that the 2014 season will be his last. He is the last remaining player of the Yankees "Core Four", with Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte retiring at the end of last year, and Jorge Posada the year before. I hope to see him back in the future, as a coach or manager.

This comes two or three years too late.

He hasn't been a good baseball player in a while. I mean, 2012 was a great year for him, but before that, you have to go back to 2009 to find the player Derek Jeter was most of his career.

I won't really be sad to see him retire. As a Red Sox fan, he was probably the only guy on that team aside from A-Rod that I actively worried about when we went to play against the Yankees. And with A-Rod suspended for a full year (and unlikely to get back to old form once his suspension is over) and Jeter hobbling to the finish line, there's nothing on the Yankees I really fear anymore, except for maybe Ellsbury. But you can get around one guy.

Jeter is one of the Yankees in history I respect most (following Mariano Rivera), but it doesn't change the fact I won't miss him at all.

And his "farewell tour" is totally narcissistic.

Jeter was a great player in 2012 and before...
He did horrible lately like Leggy said and I think it was a good idea to retire.. He is getting old as well.

It's sad seeing a great player going to retire but it was probably a good choice for him.

I do not like the Yankees as I am a Colorado Rockies, Cincinnati Reds, Toronto Blue Jays, Giants and Cardinals person. However Jeter is a very good player. He will probably get in the HOF one of these days. He also played the game the right way not linked to steroids. Personally I think he got tired of dealing with the drama of A-fraud. Not to mention his ankles are bad after all the years of playing on the field. I want to think he had ankle surgery. I can see him being a hitting coach

tornadocam : Why are you picking on A-Rod? More than 50% of baseball players nowadays use PEDs, why is everyone giving A-Rod crap and no one else?

True lot of them have used it: Clemens, Bonds, Sosa, McGuire, and several others have used it. I will say this there is probably some that used it but we will never know.

In my opinion, he’s doing this for the money and publicity. He’s not doing it for himself though, he’s doing it for the team. Statistically, last season, the Yankees have lost money and attendance, and that was even with Rivera’s Farewell tour bringing fans to the stadium every day. Jeter could have easily retired at the end of the year, but I believe he chose to announce his retirement now as a last ditch effort to make sure that the team gets a sellout crowd every single day before he leaves for good.

Again, I believe he is doing it for the team and not for himself.

zanderlex : I don't think so. I think he is retiring because he is old It definitely had nothing to do with personal gain. It is possible that he wanted publicity for the team, but unlikely.

tgags123 : I mean this is the reason for announcing his retirement before the season starts instead of at the end of the year. So people know in advance that he is retiring so they come.
