Donkey Kong Country returns in this new adventure that will be more challenging than the first adventure. Argh Shiver me timbers time to lace up the pirate gear or you walk the plank. Okay in all seriousness onto the review.

Story: 9
The story is good for this game. I really like this plot. From the intro and manual. Donkey Kong is setting on a beach relaxing. Cranky bops him on the head. The big ape ask what did you do that fore? Cranky says back in my day I was throwing barrels didn't get to rest like this what is a hero doing relaxing? Donkey Kong tells Cranky off by saying go bug Diddy as well as Diddy's girlfriend Dixie, and he walks off saying how today's whipper snappers have no respects for their Elders. Donkey Kong is unknown of the danger lurking around him or what is fixing to happen to him. King Rool is plotting to get revenge on Donkey Kong now dressed as a pirate captain. Has his minions kidnap Donkey Kong. King Rool leaves a note if you want to see your friend again hand over the bananas. The other Kongs are stunned. Cranky says I guess we should give them back. He goes on to say this is the worst story ever in a video game. Diddy Kong and his girlfriend Dixie Kong say they will go to Crocodile Island and rescue the big ape and defeat King Roo as well as prove to Cranky that they are heroes too. Okay what can I say I like how Rare did the pirate theme for this game. It has a good plot. The bad guys returning to get revenge on the heroes. Now the heroes have to go rescue Donkey Kong on the Kremlings turf. The pirate theme was a very nice touch. It gives the player a good reason to beat the game. So Overall I really liked how the plot was done.

Graphics: 10
The graphics in this game really shine. The levels have very good graphics for 16 bit. If I did not know any better I would think they were 64 bit that is how good they are. The first world makes the player think they are actually on a Pirate Ship. The lava in the fire level really glows. Also the sunken ship graphics look like a sunken ship. The graphics really show in the carnival stage with all the lights and fireworks going off in the background. The haunted level also has good graphics the way the leaves blow in the wind. This game has very awesome graphics. The controls are nicely done too not at one time does the controls feel sluggish or lag. Like Donkey Kong Country the controls are smooth. Also the game does not lag even when you would suspect their would be lags like in the blowing wind in the haunted levels there is no lag. In fact, I do not recall the first game or even the 3rd game having a lag either. The springs of the characters are nicely done especially with the heroes and enemies. So to sum it up the graphics do not get much better than this.

Sound: 10

The sound is good in this game and really matches the level. Each stage has its own theme. The first world has the ship theme and the music fits that accordingly. The sunken ship level has slow music making the player think they are actually there it fits it nicely. The haunted level has that touch that goes along with the level being haunted. Each stage's music goes along with its theme. In addition, the way the enemies groan after being knocked out if very funny. Another sound is when they hit the water and the player hears a splash after knocking them out. I just find that sound nice and funny. The sound of the enemies is very great especially if they hit you when your Kong goes ow or when you hit them how they groan. The other sounds of this game are nicely done and smooth. This is the smoothest sounding game I have played. I have played a lot of games Mario, Mega Man, Yoshii and the Donkey Kong games. The Donkey Kong countries games have some of the best sound to them. I would say it rivals the Mega Man sounds.

Addictiveness: 9
This game is very addictive. I can remember getting this game right when if first came out. I liked this game then and I still like it now. Just the pirate theme, the killer graphics and sound really adds replay value. Plus there are several things to collect in this game (more on that later). I am 29 years old now and I really like to play this game. I want to think I was 11 when this game came out. So that shows how fun this game is and how it has aged well. It is a very great and fun game to play.

Depth: 9
The depth of this game is very huge and good. Unlike the first Donkey Kong game were there were just bonus levels to find this one has more. Now, all bonus levels must be found to get all the Krem Koins. So players will need to replay stages to make sure they have all the bonus levels cleared and one. The first game you just had to find them. In this addition you have to complete them. In addition, the bonus levels are well hidden requiring a lot of searching. Also this game has another collection in the player has to find the DK hero coins hidden by Cranky. A lot of the coins are well hidden so again requiring the player to back track to make sure they have them all. Also there is a secret level that can be unlocked if you find enough of the Krem Koins. So, this game has a lot of things to collect and a lot of depth to it. More depth than the first game. This game is so big it is going to take a while to beat. It took me several days to beat due to the huge depth of this game.

Difficulty: 8
This game is difficulty was hard to rate. The first few levels are not bad at all in fact they are pretty much easy. However, that changes in Level 3 were the enemies get tougher and the levels have more obstacles. In addition, the bosses at the end of the worlds get tougher. The game really gets difficult after level 4. The last two Levels are the kind of difficult that makes one want to scream. The bonus levels and Coins are very hard to complete and collect as well as find. Not to mention the enemy placement gets more numerous. It is so easy after Level 4 to have a bunch of enemies to deal with at once. Level 5 the way the mist hides enemies it is so easy to get hit and not see the Kremlings or their friends coming near you. So that adds difficulty. I will go on and say King Rool is not easy in this game, he takes several tries to beat and does not have a simple attack pattern like he did in the first game. So this game is difficult and has its tough spots. The only thing that kept this rating from being a 9 or 10 was because of the first two levels being easy. I guess Rare wanted the first two levels to be easy and get the player used to the controls.

Overall: 9.6
After playing the first Donkey Kong Country I was wondering if they could make a better game and they did. Donkey Kong Country 2 has an awesome pirate theme to it. This game had killer graphics and awesome sound. Also, they are a lot of things to do in this game such as complete bonus levels and find DK koins. This game rocked and was when the Super Nintendo was at its peak. Donkey Kong Country 2 is one of the greatest Donkey Kong games. Rare really had a hard time topping this game in their Donkey Kong Country series. Games do not get much better than this. I really enjoy playing this game. I enjoy playing all Donkey Kong Country games but this one is my favorite of the series. If you are looking for a good game look no further. I recommend playing this game you will not be disappointed.
