Hello everyone, today I will be reviewing Super smash bros for the n64! This is perhaps the best video game series I have ever had the pleasure of playing, I have played melee and brawl, and have the pleasure of owning them both, but I am also able to play the game that started it all on vizzed! So super smash bros is basically a 2d crossover of 12 of nintendo's most popular and recognizable characters like link, mario, samus and kirby for example. This great game was released to the world in 1999 and I thoroughly enjoy playing it. I will say though, the more people playing, the more fun. Nevertheless, a great game overall and I would consider it to be one of the best multiplayer fighting games on the N64 and just in general, but that is my opinion on it. Now on to the review!

Gameplay: 9
Even though this really isn't a category, I thought I should just scrape the basics on this game and how it all works. This is a 2d fighting game and it is based off of knocking your opponent off of a stage rather than depleting a life bar. Each player has a total amount of damage in which they receive, it is represented by a percentage which goes up with the more damage you take, it can exceed 100% with a maximum of 999% just like in brawl. The higher the damage is, the farther the character can be knocked off the stage when you or your opponent attack. To KO, you have to send the other player or computer flying off the edge of the stage into the open space which is the KO zone/ area. Characters have different weight classes which can make it harder to KO heavier opponents off the edge. But inversely, it makes it harder for them to recover after being sent flying since they are heavier. So those are the basic things you need to know about the game if you don't know them already.

Graphics: 9

I am just going to say that this game has some pretty good graphics, and probably the some of the best on the N64. Every character in the game looks realistic and it represents the characters well. I would even say that each character model surpasses their models in prior games, like link for example, he looks a lot better than he did in Ocarina of time, and the same goes for mario in super mario 64 as well as the rest of the characters in this amazing game. There is clearly an exceptional amount of detail put into each character, and they are all very well animated. Aside from the characters, the stages themselves also look good as well and they really correspond with their original franchise, like the super mario bros stage for instance. Overall, the stage designs are all very well put together and show an exceptional amount of detail and effort put into the game. Along with the design, the items in the game also look really good too. The only real nitpick or complaint I would have about the graphics in the game are the ones used in the mini game stages, because to be honest some of them look kind of bland or have a dull background, but in the end, it's really just a small nitpick when you compare it to how awesome the game's graphics are, so this shouldn't be a reason to not play the game, because you would miss out on how amazing the graphics and the game overall would be. Even though this was their first attempt at making a game like this, I still think the graphics are pretty good nevertheless, the graphics in this game are incredible and perhaps the best on the N64, so for that, I scored it a 9.

Sound: 10

The sound of this game is just phenomenal, it is absolutely amazing. The graphics and gameplay alone make for an awesome game, but throw in great sound and music, and you have yourself an excellent game. Every stage in the game has a full song that corresponds to the title they are representing. In addition to that, the sounds each character makes when they attack is spot on and accurate. I will also point out that they do a great job of making each of the items in the game have their own sound, I thought that was worth mentioning since the game has a few dozen items included such as the pokemon cries or that massive donkey Kong hammer that deals massive amounts of unforgiving damage. I would say that the sound is perhaps one of the game's best features, even though the console is limited to having 1 song per stage, I think that they really made the right choice for ?each one, because they all really add and contribute to the greatness of the game, so because of that I scored the sound and music used in this game a 10 because it really deserves it, it's just that perfect...

Addictiveness: 9

I find this game to be very addicting and I enjoy playing it in classic mode and just going through each stage and beating each character respectively. Even after you beat classic mode, you can still go back to unlock extra characters as well as more lives, continues and the ability to choose the difficulty level. However, I think that this is a game best played with more than 1 player, it is just more fun to play with friends or family and perhaps the best way to spend your time playing this game. The battle mode in this game sort of resembles some sort of a storyline, in this mode you are basically paired to fight against another character on a stage, as you go on, it will progressively get more difficult, the characters you battle will become harder to fight, or you might also be faced with battling multiple characters on each stage rather than just 1. The difficulty level is adjustable though, so if you find it difficult, you can change it anywhere from very easy, easy, normal, hard and really hard, so choose accordingly depending on how good you are with the battle mode in this game.
There is also target practice mode which is a nice little bonus and I think it is fun, although you may not agree. You basically just break targets on a stage which varies on the character you are using. It is fairly easy and fun with all the little challenges they try to add in to make it more exciting. There aren't any levels of difficulty for this mode, rather there are just different sets of targets you can practice on. And then there is the platform mode which isn't that bad, but it is rated low by a lot of people for some reason, it is just navigating through puzzles to get onto a platform and then proceeding to the next one, there isn't that much to it really. But I don't think it is nearly as bad or as boring as some people make it out to be. It all depends on what you like though, so the choice is up to you. Overall this game is really addictive and fun to play because of all the various modes it includes and also because of the extra motivation you get to unlock more characters and extra stuff, therefore I scored it a 9 in addictiveness.

Story: N/A

There isn't really that much of a story or plot to this game, but it leaves it open for you to interpret and reflect your own thoughts on the plot. I guess it is really up to you to decide what to make of the story. The intro suggests that this game world is just a bunch of toys that are pulled out of a chest by master hand. Everything is peaceful and normal one day, and out of nowhere Master hand comes out and starts wreaking havoc, and it is up to you stop him, even though he tries to stop you by making the other Nintendo characters turn against you and prevent you from succeeding. Like I said, there isn't really much to it story wise, but you can make of it what you will. In the end, I don't think that the story is all that important because most of the time you just spend battling and beating up other characters like your classic beat em' up type of game. So I really don't think that the story plays that massive a role in this game in importance. Nevertheless, just because I left it blank doesn't mean you shouldn't play the game, it is really your choice to make what you will out of the plot of the game, so I am leaving that up to you which is why I left it blank because how good the story is depends on what YOU think of it, which may vary for each person.

Depth: 7

This game truly has a lot to offer you with its various modes in which you can play on your own, against a computer, or with some friends which is the best way to make the most out of this game in my opinion. This game has 11 regular fighting stages for you to play on, and then there are 3 more that you can unlock by either breaking the targets or boarding the platform. The game offers 3 modes in which you can play which I mentioned above, but I think that battle mode has the greatest amount of depth to it since you battle each of the characters in a straight line, sometimes battling more than one at a time on each stage. And like I mentioned, you can choose how hard you want it to be depending on your style of gaming.

As for the other modes like practice mode and target practice offer a fair amount of stuff to do and they are pretty enjoyable to play. You can unlock extra things in the game by doing missions ad such, but I am not going to reveal exactly how and where to get them. That is for you to discover on your own. Altogether though, this game does offer a decent amount of stuff for you to do as well as motivation to continue playing to unlock the extra stuff as well. There area few modes you can enjoy however you would like. This game shouldn't take you forever to unlock the extra stuff, but it should extend for a fair amount of time if you play it legitimately without cheating....so for that reason I scored the depth of this game a 7.

Difficulty: 5

I am not really sure how to score this game difficulty wise because that is up to you to decide how difficult it is. For some people it may be a walk through the park and for others it might be pretty challenging. It all depends on the type of gamer that you are and how you approach this game. I didn't find it that difficult considering that you can just the difficulty accordingly to your style. Therefore the difficulty is variable. The battle mode comes in a few levels of difficulty in which you ca choose from: very easy which is probably the way to go if you have never played this game before and you have had no prior experience. This is a walk through the park in difficulty and the characters are super easy to beat. Next is easy difficulty which isn't that much harder than before, the only difference is the computers are just a little bit stronger, but they are still fairly easy to beat. Next up is normal which is neutral and this is where you really start to notice a difference in the gameplay, the computers are more challenging and the items start to turn on you, but don't worry though, this isn't as hard as it gets and this is really where you start to notice little changes in difficulty. Next up is hard which is the mode I play on most, the characters are a lot more strategic and they are much harder to beat and the items aren't really going to work in your favor, so this is more of a challenge. And last but not least is the very hard mode which is for more experienced players, I have played here before and it really does make a difference because I end up losing more lives than I would normally have on hard difficulty. This mode is certainly the place to come if you are looking for a serious challenge. So, to conclude, the difficulty really depends on your style when it comes to this game, if you are new then it is probably higher, and if you are more experienced, then it isn't that much of a challenge, so that is why i scored it a neutral score of 5 because it is dependent on your experience with this game. Even if you are new, all you need is a little practice and you will get the hang of it and it will come off easier to you eventually.

Overall: 9.6
Overall this game is a lot of fun and I enjoy playing all of its different modes and challenges it throws at me. This game is a classic and a stepping stone to one of the greatest video game series ever, from this to melee to brawl, it only keeps getting better and more exciting each time. I am anxious for the new one to come out this year...I highly recommend this game if you have ever played a brawl/ fighting game before, because this is worth it, it will guarantee you hours of great fun and I think the best way to spend this game is playing it with friends. I know it sounds cheesy, but really, you can only experience this game's awesomeness by playing with a buddy. To wrap things up, this game is amazing and it is a great collection to your N64, I always have a great time playing this game and all it has to offer, so I hope you can have just as much fun playing it yourself!

Thanks for reading my review, feel free to comment or provide feedback so that I can continue to become a better reviewer. Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoyed it!

Long read, but I finally finished

I could understand your ratings from what you wrote and I liked what I read. Yes, difficulty is variable and it's helpful to know what you're doing as a newer member. I can understand how players who have never played brawl would find it much more difficult to play this game than SSMB experts.

I like your addition of game-play and your take on the story, which I agree with.

I loved the game and want to try a speed run for fun.

Nice review, dude!

Great review! It is really long but that is how a game review is supposed to be. Great details and back-up on what you said about the game for each of the sections. Super Smash Brothers is one of my favorite games on the Nintendo 64 as well as game series right now. It is still pretty cool to see its growth over the years and the game series is still going strong. I still have a physical copy of this game!

One of the best reviews that I have read in a while and keep up with the good work!
