Hello, everybody, NintendoFanKimmy here, and, this time, I bring you another thread about... something. No offense, but society on the internet over years has become increasingly... stupid. It doesn't feel the same as the past; the majority of people you talk to seem mindless. Honestly, it's like the internet has developed its own language. Abbreviations such as 'lol', 'btw', and 'brb' are okay, I guess, but recently it has become incomprehensible. Even when not on the internet, people talk to each other in a similar manner. "Hashtag yolo!" I heard my best friend's brother suggest when she was uploading a picture to instagram. Also, 'selfie' and 'twerk' are now official words of the English language. My conclusion - modern society is pathetic. This really calls for a "I don't want to live on this planet anymore'.

#yolo is just a meme, well at least it was. 
Basically there would be a picture of someone doing some sort of an extreme stupidly dangerous activity and they add the caption of #yolo.It was funny and still is in a way but I think what you are describing is the abuse of it. Let's face it, it happens to almost every meme. Remember the Troll Face?

Twerking has been around for ages. People have been doing it in the clubs for ages and miley cyrus just made it a popular dance move if you wish to call it that.

Ha ha. It's funny because I use YOLO too mock so many people. As for the acronyms I don't really mind. I use it when I'm texting just to save me time. As for twerking no one I know actually enjoys watching twerking. It's popular because it's a joke amongst a lot of people. Twerking has also been around for quite some time it was only made popular recently. The words themselves have been turned more into a joke now more than anything. Yeah I'm not really a big fan of the YOLO thing either. I don't really mind about the other stuff though.. I even do a lot of them myself and when I get goofy I start typing like I text in chat. I sometimes get bored and this helps me cope with that a lot .. but I understand where your coming from it does get pretty annoying at times and it doesn't make a lot of sense half the time but I guess it's what the world keeps coming to and it keeps growing which also leaves us with more things to put in the list of different words used now days.

It is really weird to hear someone so young talk about how the internet used to be.   Mrs. NintendoFanKimmy wasn't even born yet when the was what it used to be to me.  But to I understand the point of her post in that some of the stuff moving from the net to real life is quite absurd.  I still think MIB said it right when they said "A person is smart, but people are stupid.".

I know how you feel there...YOLO is one of the dumbest sounding things I've ever heard. I was almost horrified to discover that so many people followed it. And that there's all these "epic selfee xD" and gross twerk crud everywhere. And since it went on TV, and once my brother actually said "lol" instead of laughing, or reacting at all, I can't escape it! >.< Thankfully, like MechaMento, said, it's just another fad. It'll die out soon enough. These things all have a short lifespan, then fade off into obscurity.

None the less, I hate stupid words like those that just randomly appear in the language. I never use those unless I am on twitter and I need to use # but I will never use Yolo. I think of it as something weird XD   And for those other words... it is just internet talk, making its way into the English language?!??! It is a sad world we are living in. There's always something hip or cool going on and this is just one of those things.

In the 1920s, it was wearing unisex clothing and cutting hair short for women. Guys liked to sit on top of poles for hours to see how long they could stay up there. 

I'm sure even then, people (especially parents) wondered what society was coming to.

It's not was society is coming to but what society is already.

So I accept society and all these changes. Sure, "YOLO", "selfies" and "twerking" have been added to the English language, but the world is not that much different from what it was.

There are many far worse problems going on in the world and these small words show me that despite all the problems we face as a country, we still have fun and can be random and crazy.

I think the Internet since its creating on the early 1980's is become or has become the new way of communication. Some abbreviations I do not understand its like a foreign language to me. I understand some of the basic ones. However, a lot of them I have never heard of and I have had to ask what does that mean to some of my friends. I guess I'm just old school
