I would keep it in the type triangle to keep each choice fair and that your rival will always have the advantage.
You should also go for pokemon with similar base stats, so you don't want some OP pokemon with a Rattata.

I wouldn't go for Magbe, Elekid and Smoochum. That trio has because a bit of a cliche so be original.
Something like Machop, Aron and Ralts would work but really the final verdict is yours, be creative.

You could have a Dark, Psychic, And Fighting trio. Something like Machop, Abra, and Houndour. If it's a hack, you can edit the evolution circumstances of the Pokemon, as well as the moves they learn, so Abra isn't useless.
