Man just look at this and it speaks the truth about companies like Nintendo abandoning their hardcore adiance and going toward these so called games I.E casual gamers. on a side-note don't hate casual gamers but they are kinda of killing of some great games.

Tell me about it. I almost didn't make it through the whole video it was so bad! Nintendo doesn't know what they're doing, because if they think that's what their customers want, then they're way off.

I don't know... from a business perspective, I think choosing not to compete with the PS3/Xbox360 was one of the smartest things they did with this generation of consoles.

Personally, I'm kind of glad they target "casual gamers," because it sparks an interest in video games for people who might otherwise never have wanted to try one. And maybe some of them will move on to become "hardcore" players, but even for the ones who don't, it gives them some common ground. Gamers shouldn't be trying to form some kind of an elitist (e1337ist?) club.

Geez, no real gamer says "1337" unless their mocking people who do
None of the current consoles can really claim to be for gamers as they just cater the masses.
Back in the days of old console gaming, it wasnt that popular with the same crowd as today.
Games are popular when the majority can understand/play them, not because they are good.
Games that anyone can play are simple because that way even an idiot can play them.
Hence, popular games are suited for idiots and children, not necessarily for gamers or hardcore players.

It would be fine if the game companies were still making games like they used to as well as the games for casual players, but as it is it feels like they have abandoned the people that supported them for 20-30 odd years in favour of a quick buck.
Sure they do the ocassional rerelease of a classic like Chrono Trigger on DS, but it would be nice to have a NEW game or two as well.

I don't know... I think a lot of the alleged difficulty of older console games stemmed from the fact that they were poorly translated and/or had control systems that were less than intuitive. For some of those old-school games, players had little hope of figuring out what was going on without looking in the manual. They weren't accessible, and it was because of poor design, not because everyone thought video games were only for geeks.

If catering to the masses means making games that are designed to be playable, I'm all for it. I think games should be easy to play but hard to master.

Nintendo isn't the only company doing that. Many other companies outside the gaming industry are aiming for the children because it generates more revenue on their part. It really does suck but that is another reason to love the other systems more

lol, I think someone hasnt been playing the right old school games then
Try U-four-ia on NES or Contra on SNES for example.
Easy to play and figure out what is what, but hard to master.
There are alot less games that are poorly translated or had buggy controls then you think, and I seriously dont know what you're talking about.
Maybe you better give me an example of an old game that you think was buggy

I'm all for playable games, but there are too few of those "easy to play hard to master" games around now is all.

One that comes to mind is Might and Magic 2 on the SNES, where it was mostly text-based and you had to go through half a dozen menus just to, say, put on armor. It came with a manual the size of a small book to explain all the spells and stuff because there was no explanation in-game of what they did. It wasn't that the controls were buggy, they were just a pain to use.

Acording to GameFAQs Might and Magic 2 was cancelled for release outside of Japan so I wouldnt know about the manual size or anything.

But I will agree on the point the PC to console ports dont work in lots of cases, point and clicks shouldnt be on anything that doesnt have a mouse the works with the game.
Case in point Starcraft on the N64. Great game on PC, rubbish on N64.

It was? o.o Because I used to have an English version of the PC edition and an English emulated SNES version... Maybe this is one of those cases where the game called "2" in the US was actually 3 or 4. *shrug*
As I recall, the PC version was all keyboard input too, but it was considerably less annoying than the SNES one because at least you could press the shortcut keys instead of scrolling through menu after menu.
But I guess it's not quite fair to use a PC port as a standard to judge that entire era of games... ;

Id say the Snes version was probally either a beta or a patched rom most likely, its not rare to see a game named differently in the US then in Japan (The whole FF3/6 thing springs to mind) but this time it doesnt seem the case.

Some new games coming out on Wii as well as Segas Project Needlemouse announcement are giving me a little hope that gaming companies might be listening, but I wont hold my breath

Heh, seriously?
YOu don't think they'll ever do anything wrong.
I'm sure they've done a lot of things wrong in their time, who hasn't...... but that is a really big call saying they never have/will.

No... like how they broke contracts and forced Sony to have to make the Playstation to make up the money they lost because of Nintendo...
Or removing the "Nintendo LIFETIME warranty" in favour of the newer 1 year warranty...
Or selling out to popularity and gimmicks instead of focusing on what their loyal consumers wanted...
No, Nintendo could not possibly do anything wrong

I think it's fine that they're trying to get more people into the industry but it's sad that they forget about the ones already here in some cases.

Just as long as they don't stop making Zelda games. If they did that, I'd be making trips to all of Nintendo's HQ buildings with flaming bags of stink in tow!
