Wario Land is nothing like Mario anything Mario had at the time, nor would ever have even to present day. There is some good to this, but a lot more bad... And all will be discussed within the ratings of each category.
Graphics: 9. For the original Gameboy, the graphics were good. It may not be vivid and detailed, but each enemy is unique, you can clearly see platforms, etc. It's such a shame the controls are so sluggish and unresponsive (in a PLATFORMER of all gaming types...) that you can't be bothered to actually take advantage of the fact you can see your surroundings and react accordingly.
Sound: 7. Unique, fitting, but repetitive. The music does justice on the feel of the game being a zany, anti-hero escapade. And I don't think there'd be a very good way to prepare you via music for the brutality that lies ahead. Bringing us too...
Addictiveness: 6. Oh sure, a part of you wants to continue playing. Especially when you know there is an alternate ending if you have enough coins. Wario Land is just simple and inviting enough to keep you playing, without actually offering you anything. You want to talk about greed? It ain't Wario who is greedy, he's just a byproduct of his environment. The game is completely unforgiving. One wrong move, and you're a little midget with a mohawk regardless of your power ups. I honestly don't know what the hearts are for if 1Ups can be accumulated separately, my guess is it's a slower way. It sure isn't for health in-game. And many of times (because of the bad controls as I said) you'll find yourself spiraling right into a downgraded power-up you did not ask for. With walls, enemies, bad control schemes, and absolutely no sort of clue where you're supposed to go next, the game hardly qualifies as addictive which I take to mean "fun". By the second level you are expected to just figure out where the plus sign giant coin is so you can escape this nightmarish scenery with phantom platforms, guys who have nothing better to do then try and spear you, spiky tops falling from the sky, and all the while you're on a timer. So you may in fact have to leave the stage, then come back. Which isn't exactly a bad strategy as it means collecting more coins... But that is a drudgery when all that needed to be done was make it obvious where the big coin was and then if you want to explore the ins and outs, hey... that's on you.
Story: 1. Nintendo isn't known for riveting stories, but by far Wario's is pretty much the worst. But we expect that. We're okay with one-dimensional characters so far as the game is fun and replayable. Unfortunately...
Depth: 7. There's actually a lot more then meet's the eye. You'd think at first this was some shotty platformer with very linear levels, but there's actually quite a bit of sub levels to be found on the one stage you entered. You're going to have a ball perfecting the different power-ups against enemies and the level as a whole. (Though your fun will come to a screeching halt because you can't save collected power-ups in an inventory and losing your power up leaves you so vulnerable you may as well reset right then and there.)
Difficulty: 6. The game isn't hard so much as unfinished. As said the controls are just feel like cinder blocks, by and large the platforms are so narrow that you're just inviting to get hit, (we get it... Wario's fat. Doesn't mean he needs to take up half the screen) and nothing is really explained to you so you're going to die more so by roaming about and accidentally getting hit then by some sort of challenging enemy. In fact, the enemies are quite easy as far as defeating them goes. It's just eventually they're going to get you in your blind spot or while you're trying to maneuver with the two seconds too late response time.
Overall: 7.5. Maybe it's my keyboard, I don't know. With my main gripe being the controls and really the finding out how to get from point A to point B is not really something I can attack more so just disagree on how it should be done, I'm left with saying it's not a bad game, just has some annoyances that aren't going away anytime soon. If you're big on Mario games, you probably know that already. |
