So, here's a game I wasn't sure what to make of when I first saw it. I don't think you know this, but I'm a pretty large fan of the classic Sonic the Hedgehog games. A hack of the original with a Christmas theme seemed like a pretty good idea. My hoped drooped a bit when I noticed it was a texture hack, but I still had hope that I'd at least enjoy the new graphics of the areas. This led me to play through every level, plus get all the chaos emeralds in order to try to find anything new in the game that'd interest me. Unfortunately, I didn't find anything that matched what I was hoping for of the game.

Graphics: I'll start with my main problem I have with this hack here. This problem is that the graphics don't actually do much with the Christmas theme. Oh sure, every area has a palette swap to more Christmas-like colors. I don't think I went two levels without noticing the red and green in the environments. Even Sonic's Christmas sprite is kinda nice. I do like the hat they put on him, kinda shows they were working on more then just replacing colors. Sadly, the effort seems to lack in most places. The problem is that a palette swap is almost all the game offers. If you were hoping for newly made backgrounds that show off the Christmas theme, you won't find them. I was hoping to see Christmas trees, maybe some ice in Labyrinth zone. Really, the closest you get to new looks is the lava in Marble Zone. It has become frozen water, with ice sticking out of it. More cool changes like this would have been appreciated. Though even this is kind of open to critique, as the frozen water still shoots out fireballs. Them being made icicles could have been a nice addition. Finally, the lack of snow really surprised me. The only level you could say is really snowy is Green Hill Zone, and that's just the grass recolored white. Luckily at least the enemies and sprites remain decent. While they don't change much and disappoint on the Christmas end, they're still nice looking like in the Genesis original. You'll just have to deal with less variety in colors. I give the graphics a seven, for looking nice like the original, but severely toning down the color pallet and disappointing in Christmas themes.

Sound: The sound in this game isn't really anything to mention if you've played the original Sonic the Hedgehog, because that's what it is. Nothing was changed at all from the game's original soundtrack. That's not to say that's completely bad however. The original Sonic game did have great music, and I don't mind listening to it again in this hack. Though the lack of Christmas music is disappointing, I don't mind it much, seeing it could be far worse. The only major criticism I have about the sound is at the beginning of the game. Everyone knows about the voice at the beginning of Sonic the Hedgehog that says Sega. Prepare to wet yourselves when you hear it in this game. It's more of a static sound and demonic roar then the normal way it is said. Though this isn't too bad, it's still a bit off putting from a Christmas game. Made me wonder if I started playing a Halloween hack by accident. I give the sounds a seven, for having the original games music. Though the voice at the beginning definitely brought it down from the eight or nine it would have had.

Addictiveness: The question of if I'll play this again is a tough one, since it does have a good game it's based off of. Sonic the Hedgehog, Christmas edition is a fan game of course that you may want to play again. This is mostly due to the original Sonic the Hedgehog though. If you really want to play it again, playing that might be a better choice for you. I'm not sure when I'd play this again, unless it was Christmas and I wanted a more festive game instead of the normal version.  The problem is the fact it barely stands out except for the colors. This means you really don't remember it and have much of a reason to come back to it after the first playthrough.

Story: I don't think you need to be told the story of Sonic the Hedgehog, but if you do, I'll go over it quickly. It's about an anthropomorphic hedgehog that needs to save the world after a mad scientist starts kidnapping all the animals on his island home and making them robots. That's all you get really in the original game. In this one on the other hand, the story is the exact same, only.. In winter? I think...  As you can see, nothing has changed in the story, as it's still about Sonic saving the animals and stopping Doctor Robotnik/Eggman. So, this leaves the game without even a story related to the holiday. It's kind of just the original game, in winter. This leaves it yet again without much to define itself. I gave the story a 2. It copies the original Sonic the Hedgehog's not so amazing story, and simply changes the season that it takes place in. Though the original game wouldn't rate high in story either. So this part I give the game a pass on.

Depth: I'm going to be honest here, there's not really much to do when you go through the game. You beat levels, and you collect chaos emeralds if you want. That's pretty much it. The levels are fun themselves though, and you can at least try to beat them under a time limit or go for the highest possible score. There's not much to do with extra modes either, as the only mode in the game is the main levels. This leaves you without much to do except play through every level and try to beat your score. Sure getting all the chaos emeralds is a distraction, but that will only keep you for a bit. Sonic the Hedgehog also was guilty of this, so it's hard to blame the hack for it. I still would have liked if it changed something though. Maybe made a new mode to add more content to play through? The depth gets a four in my opinion. You have main levels to go through and chaos emeralds to unlock. After that you can try to get higher scores then you did last time. Though you won't have much else to do.

Difficulty: The difficulty is another thing that is the exact same from the game this is a hack of. You really don't have any changes in the levels. This means that you'll still have a pretty hard experience sometimes. Green Hill Zone is still easy and fun to run through. Levels like Marble Zone and Labyrinth Zone are still difficult and time consuming affairs that can leave you begging to reach the checkpoint sometime soon. Getting the best ending can also be difficult if you're not using save states, as the chaos emeralds can be hard to collect depending on how good you are at avoiding hits to collect enough rings. Then you need to get through the dizzying special stage itself. Really, there's not much to say about the difficulty, except that it fluctuates a lot depending on the level. The difficulty gets a six, for having some levels like Green Hill that are a breeze, and other, more time consuming and difficult levels like Labyrinth Zone.

Wrapping up: So, you've heard me say all the bad things about this game, and now it's time to get down to the final verdict. You might be surprised to know, that I don't find it that bad. It can actually be pretty fun to play through just to see what the changed color palette does to the zones. The problems I had really amount to expectations that weren't met. Though some of the things they did do were pretty cool, like changing the lava in Marble Zone to icy water. I'd say this is something you might want to play for yourself and decide on. Some people might find the palette swap as a perfectly fine way to do a Christmas hack. Though others might want more from something with this potential. Overall, the game gets a 7.5. It's still just as fun as Sonic the Hedgehog, but takes a hit in the variety of colors and the sound. I still enjoyed it overall though, and would be glad to know if other people found it to be a fun Christmas hack.

Interesting,  very Interesting...

The game looks like they could have pulled off more effort into it!

Making the hat stand up a little would get me impressed!

If I ever learn how to do texture hacks I may do one with better animations of sonic and enemies.

Such a good review...
It's good you took your time over this review instead of rushing it!

Anyway, I think this review is pretty neat with not signs of rushing or bad gammer.
You explained everything well and now I even have doubts if I want to play it.

Keep up the good work and merry Christmas
