The other day, I came across an article depicting the actions of Sea Shepherd- which I am sure all of you have heard of.

In essence, do you agree on using, as quoted by wikipedia, 'direct action tactics' to combat this issue? And if not, how would you go about it?

I'm curious about the legality of what the Sea Shepard does.  Aren't they breaking the law in international waters?

Anyway, the right course is to go about it from a legal standpoint and let international law take over.  Every time I see that fat captain fail, it makes me happy.  Only because he's a d-bag, not because I support whaling.

You can kill pretty much anything or one you want if it makes things easier on the right polotitions. Can't say I ever really understood why the Sea Shepherd does what it does in the first place.

I love radical action. Its really, really effective. Hammurabi was king of Babylon for a while. If you stole, he'd chop off that hand. Somehow, there weren't many people stealing in Babylon while his code of law was going on.

I'd love radical action on whaling. We catch you whaling, we kill you and your whole crew. I promise you, after the first cruise missile hits a whaling party, there won't be any whaling for a long time.

Whales are endangered. There is already an international moratorium (ban) on whaling. This is from Sea Shepherd's website:
"In 1986, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) enacted a moratorium on all commercial whaling. Since then, three nations - Iceland, Norway, and Japan - have brutally slaughtered over 25,000 whales under the guise of scientific research and for commercial purposes. The IWC does not have the capacity to enforce the moratorium. Sea Shepherd, guided by the United Nations World Charter for Nature, is the only organization whose mission is to enforce these international conservation regulations on the high seas."

Why should the IWC be able to tell nations to stop whaling?
I think that would be an infringement on a nation's sovereignty.

National sovereignty does not mean a nation can do what it pleases.

If a nation wishes to partake in whaling, I wish to shoot whaling vessels with cruise missiles.

Well, it seems to me that a lot of 'science" regarding animal populations and extintion are used as propoganda to gain more power. One that I've never looked into myself but that I've heard about is the spotted owl.

They say that loggers were going to drive it into extinction, but it was all false. The loggers left and the owl didn't do any better.

Actually I heard that it's been doing worse since the loggers left.

What makes me upset is when polotitions think that they know more about wildlife conservation that hunters who have been hunting for generations and have hands on experience.

Lets say the whale stuff is propaganda and the hunting isn't actually hurting them. How do we really know unless we experiment? Stop the whalers. See if their populations increase. I'd rather be considered an environmentalist wacko tree-hugger than the guy who helped kill off all the whales.

Caution is appropriate with animals of such low populations. Also, I wouldn't recommend hunt spotted owls to see if their populations improve.

Finally, "polotitians" get their info from lobbyists. They're just repeating what they're told.

Everyone falls over about people killing dolphins and whales(which sucks of course), but you might like to know100 million sharks are killed each year, and usually just for their fins. Why does no one care about the shark? 30% of the world's shark species are near extinction, that's a HUGE impact on a marine ecosystem.

I'm also appalled at the ridiculous debate above, lol, it doesn't take a scientist to figure out that if you kill large numbers of certain animals, or remove their habitat, that they could possibly go extinct.

anyway, regarding the actual topic, I don't think it's right to destroy other people's property, and you should definitely not sink someone's ship while they're on the ship. That's a bit too far. It would be better that legislation be enacted to be able to detain and imprison poachers, and actually enforce it.

What I would like to know is for what kind of scientific research you need so many dead whales that end up on Japanese restaurants and supermarkets anyway? Just asking the question here, if there is anyone who can tell.

I think animals being hunt at all is cruelty. Whales are beautiful creatures but they are less populated these days. I don't approve of it but other sea animals like dolphins and sharks are also being killed. It doesn't take a scientist to figure out that killing a certain animal and it's habitat would make them extinct. I just think it should stop but I feel like it never will.

Well .. I heart animals so I am not a fan of cruelty to them . But it depend son HOW extreme . Shutting down ports and habours that are likely to promote whaling or  sinking the ships of Whalers? I don't like violence but if a ship that Whales just happens to get sunk then I have no sympathy.
