On a lot of websites (Facrbook, Twitter, etc), they are used to make categories of different posts. Say one person makes a post about Vizzed, ending it with #vizzed, and a few other people use that same hashtag, you can click on the hashtag, and it'll show you every recent post where people used that hashtag.

Pretty much as already stated.
I went to see a comedian one, everyone had been #markwatson on facebook and twitter before they came.
And the comedian had actually looked at all these before the show, and proceeded to embarass people who had said embarassing things.

Have just arrived in Edinburgh.
Cant understand a word anyone is saying.
Im in favour of Scottish independnce."

That was pretty funny, Kind of awkaward for the guy that made it though, he didnt expect it to be read out to a room full of scotts.
