Pokémon Emerald is my favorite game in the whole Pokémon franchise. It came out with 135 new Pokémon and gave us some options for after the game, or when you don't feel like continuing with the story. It's a nice start into the Pokémon games with a cool story, decent graphics, and colorful characters. The game's story provides up to a week of game play, and the post game makes for an even longer experience with contests, the Pokédex, and Pokémon raising. This game even has a whole new feature which will take another week to complete: the Battle Frontier. I love it, and I totally recommend it. With that being said, let's get on to my review!

Graphics

Now, this generation of Pokémon had some pretty sweet graphics compared to the last two. It had some more color, detail, and depth. However, compared to other Game Boy Advance games, this could have been more animated and more scenic. The battle arenas are just two floating circles in front of a one color background. If you think that's bad, the Pokémon animations were only two frames and had a lot of special effects to cover those two frames up. Come on Game Freak! CRYSTAL'S ANIMATIONS HAD MORE FRAMES! Granted, additional frames would give the game longer development time which means a longer wait. The cartridge probably didn't have enough space for it is a valid excuse, but if you have room for two frames of 386 Pokémon sprites, you're going to have room for one more! For graphics, Pokémon Emerald gets a 9.

Sound

This game's music is mostly trumpets, and I think it sounds beautiful. Generation III made the best soundtrack in my opinion. I mean have you heard Deoxys's theme, Mewtwo's theme, the Hoenn Elite Four theme, and the Regis' theme? Freakin' sweet. Also, the new Pokémon's cries sound much more realistic than in the previous two generations'. The same can be said for the music. Even the Route themes sound great. Only things I don't like are the cave theme, and the theme from the outside of the Battle Frontier, but there are many more tracks to listen to. For sound, I'm trumpeting out a 10.

Addictiveness

Now, by addictiveness I don't mean wanting to play this game again, but rather to keep trucking on in the wonderful Hoenn region. I'm not saying that the story isn't great, I'm saying that restarting your whole game isn't such a terrific idea. I mean, why would you want to delete that save file where you soft resetted 8192 times to finally get that shiny Rayquaza. Jokes aside, this game is fun. The story is great. Two maniacal teams(I'm saying maniacal because Team Magma and Team Aqua aren't really evil, they're just screwed up in the head).
*SPOILER START*
You've moved into your new hometown, you meet the hot chick next door, you help some lame kid who turns out to be awesome in the Pokémon-X comic(which is about Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, not X and Y). Everything is going fan-freaking-tastic! Until you get to Petalburg Woods and you see a pirate thug stealing a rich guy's goods. This starts one of the greatest stories in Pokémon history, aside from Team Galacta(Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum), Team Plasma(Black 2 and White 2), and Team Flare(X and Y). I'll get more in depth about it, in Depth. ba-dum-crash Actually in the next part, the story. For Addictiveness this game gets a 10.

Story

Notice how I didn't put a Spoiler End there. We're going into deeper spoilers, people. Team Magma and Team Aqua are trying to fill the world with more land and more water, respectively. Aqua tries to alter the weather by infiltrating the Weather Institute and stealing Castform, they also steal a sub and a Blue Orb in order to awaken Kyogre. Magma does pretty much the same thing except with the Space Center, a Red Orb, and they try to awaken Groudon. Groudon and Kyogre start fighting in Sootopolis City, bringing forth a terrible series of climate changes creating a weather apocalypse(this doesn't happen when they battle in a real Pokémon battle for some reason). Wallace, the new League Champion and former 8th Gym Leader , and Steven, former League Champion help you to stop this by telling you of Rayquaza, the Pokémon of the sky that can negate weather patterns with its ability Air Lock, and is the only Pokémon that can stop Kyogre and Groudon from fighting(Arceus can't for some reason, he must work in mysterious ways). Rayquaza comes with an amazing cut scene for Game Boy Advance standards. He comes, stops Groudon and Kyogre from fighting, you don't battle any of them, Team Magma and Team Aqua disband, everyone leaves happy, and you resume with your League challenge. The only thing I don't like about the story is not being able to capture Groudon and Kyogre until post game(you can catch Rayquaza, but I don't recommend it unless you aren't saving your Master Ball for a shiny. If you can't find it, it's somewhere in the Team Aqua Hideout.).
*SPOILER END*
Story gets a 9 from me.

Depth

You guys, this game has so many more features than the old games and the new ones. I talked about the story in the last section, and here I'm speaking about the alternative game play modes. There are the Contests, a girly alternative to battles. You can show off your Pokémon's appearance, which for some reason it looks better after eating a lot. The same can't be said for people, but to each their own. You can also show off your Pokémon's moves depending on their Contest type of which there are 5: Smart, Beautiful, Cute, Cool, and Tough. You can compete in the Battle Frontier, an island with 7 facilities where you can test out your Pokémon's strength. There's the Battle Palace, the Battle Dome, the Battle Pyramid, the Battle Arena , the Battle Factory, the Battle Pike, and finally, the Battle Tower. You'll win 2 symbols at each facility, a silver one if you manage to beat the Frontier Brain once, and then a gold one if you beat the Frontier Brain again. For this spot, I recommend training more than one Pokémon as they will be the level of your highest leveled, and your level 51 Pelipper cannot handle Pokémon at level 91. There are also the secret bases which have so many decorations that I cannot go into Depth of right about now. (HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!) Some decorations you can buy at the Battle Frontier, so you have an incentive to go there. There's the Safari Zone, the Dex, berry farming, and Mirage Island. I don't want to go into Depth about that now, (HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!) so, I'll leave you with my rating number of 10.

Overall: 9.5 (too lazy to write review for Overall. Just read everything again.)

Thank for reading, I hope to write more reviews in the future. Hopefully more than 1,999 words.

This is your first review? I have to say, I think this review is very well done. It's definitely much better than mine. I look forward to seeing more reviews from you.

FYI, Emerald is my favorite too.

Thank you. I've played Emerald for several years and thought it deserved some praise. My next review will be on Super Mario Bros. 2.
