So, as the thread title says, I am curious, does anyone use google translate for a language in school? I don't because I understand the language I am taking pretty well and I see no need to use a translator or the internet to understand it.

I am in spanish 3 and it is pretty easy, we are just going over some basic stuff right now, but yet some kids are still translating stuff like: Como te llama? Which means what is your name? Easy stuff! Whenever we are assigned homework or even a test or quiz, I see a whole bunch of people whip out their phones and start looking up the translations. Honestly I just don't see how it is even that difficult. And yet they are like, dude you are so smart! And all I say is: it isn't even that hard....

So, just asking, do you use google translate at all, for any language? I don't just because I don't need to.

If this belongs in another forum, please feel free to move this!

Nope. I know French pretty well and I do not need it. Plus, it is wrong most of the time.

tgags123 : That last part is 100% correct.

I never use it for sentences, as it translates everything in the Same order, which is not so handy in a different language. I do use it for single words, as I have yet to Find a better translator.

pokedude38 : I can understand if it is japanese, that makes more sense since it is less commonly taught, but simple languages like spanish, like the word hola and buenos dias, kids have to look these words up and it is so easy. I am not even kidding. This is literally kindergarten stuff.

FunnyFurret is right as well because in spanish the order is backwards, like in English it would be blue car, whereas in spanish it would be carro azul. So if you're translating big paragraphs, I am willing to bet it will most likely be wrong at some point, that is why I don't use it. Plus I really don't need to because it is easy to me.

I don't. The language I study is French, and Google Translate just makes a mess of it. It doesn't conjugate the verbs properly and it translates word for word so it usually has very poor sentence structure.

At my school, our only language class is online. So we do assignments on the computer and we submit them on the website we work on (Aventa) and our teacher grades them. If we use Google Translate to find out how to say a word, she will know because either she hasn't taught us the word or it is a way to say it that she did not teach us. The punishment for using any translators for assignments in that class is pretty harsh. The first time, you get off with a warning and redo the assignment it was used for. The second time, you get a phone call home, redo the assignment, and might get kicked from the class. The third time, you are almost assuredly kicked from the class. I don't use it for assignments but I do use it for just random things I want to learn how to say. Although, it is easier to use WordReference because sometimes translators don't make proper sentences.

Well, I am in Spanish I right now, and I am in the predicament of having taken Japanese for three years before I switched. Lucky me, though, that I speak Romanian, and it's pretty darned close to Latin- which Spanish derived from. So it's a little easier for me.

I use Translate mainly when I am trying to write a sentence and can't figure out a certain particle. That's it. For example, I was trying to write, "Come to Spain," and I knew the word for 'come' and 'Spain.' It was just the particle I needed help with.

I try not to rely on Translate because, if I do, I'll be a wreck during the tests. So far, I seem to be doing pretty well in that class, though.

ShadowLink12 : That is pretty harsh, I only use it for single words I am curious to learn, I never have to use it for anything else since I am already pretty familiar. Plus it messes up sentences and it becomes obvious if we did use it. But yeah those punishments are pretty harsh. At least it will influence kids to not use it!

Dragonlord Stephi : Yeah. I basically use it for words I am curios to learn about, and that's basically all I use it for because it screws up full sentences.

I am taking Spanish, and my teacher doesn't really encourage Google Translate when it comes homework, like if she assigns some sentences and we have to insert indirect object pronouns, create comprehension questions, all that jazzy stuff, then no, Google Translate is discouraged.

However, if we are reading a difficult text, like my class is now (Senderos Fronterizos), then if there are words we do not understand, then by all means, yes, use something to translate it because she isn't going to spend a whole class period going over vocab words, and in order to keep pace with the class, you need to understand what you read.

In most cases, I use SpanishDict, but Google Translate works fine and is a quick easy-to go option.

I love to use it to have conversations on the internet with people who speak Spanish, it's a good way to practice how to have a conversation as long as you speak aloud with what you're typing, because the point of learning Spanish is to actually try to communicate. If you make a mistake(or google translate makes a mistake) they'll usually point it out. So yes.

Google translate usually gets something wrong and translates sentences into very... interesting languages. Usually if I have to translate something there's usually a glossary in the back of the textbook that we use at school that tells us the Language-English translation or vice-versa. I know that on one assignment we were supposed to translate numbers and this one person went on Google translate and got something like stop sign or something like that.

Google translate? Never for anything school related! It messes up French so badly! There's the aforementioned fact that it only translates word by word, BUT half the time it doesn't even translate the words correctly.
I use one of the less common translators for word to word translations, and use another French grammar checker to check my sentence structure, but otherwise, I try to rely more on what I'm actually taught in class, as it's far more reliable.
If I see a random comment in another language on something like Youtube, I'll turn to Google translate for a rough translation, but only out of curiosity.

Google Translate is so horrible! It always messes EVERYTHING up, and some teachers will know when you are using it, because google doesn't like some words and might change them to something else or not translate them properly. Never ever ever ever use Google translate for communicating or school.

Never. I don't find it to be reliable at all, and it can easily mess up the translated word or phrase. Besides, I am already fluent in the language courses I take, French and Arabic, so I don't even need something like Google Translate.

I use Google Translate sometimes whenever I need to know something really quick. When you do a specific or misleading sentence by the way it's phrased, the translator can get confused and not help you out. Technology is slowly taking over the world!

Yeah... I use google translate sometimes, but not always... most online translators are pretty crappy when it comes to grammar.
But other than that, they are pretty helpful
