Ah, super Mario 64, This was the game that redefined the definition of 3D platforming! The game was fun, challenging, long, and It just offered so much to do for the player at the time! Now to honest, I was always the kind of guy that wanted an actual full length sequel to the smash Hit super Mario 64, and believe It or not, In 2002, we finally got the game! The only thing though Is, Did this game go as planned? Well, Let's just find out shall we? This is Super Mario Sunshine for the nintendo gamecube! Let's see if this game will be a hit or a miss guys!
Story-7/10
The main game starts off with Mario, peach, and toadsworth flying on a plane to a tropical resort island known as Isle delfino, This is a big island with lots to do, and alot to do! A video preview is then played on the plane, And here Is where It all starts! Near the end of the video, A wierd Mario like sihollute is shown lurking in the backgrounds of the Island, After all that, The three then land on the Isle delfino airstrip, There is some wierd paintish like pirhana lurking around the center of the airstrip! Mario then meets fludd, this water like pump which can do many exciting features! Mario then decides to use fludd to wash off the creature, Little do they know the guards are looking! Mario Is then taken to jail and Is actually accused of the whole paint incident! It is now up to you to help Mario save the Island and clear his name off of this! Anyways, That Is the story!
Gameplay-8/10
Super Mario sunshine plays alot like the last 3D Mario title we reviewed, Super Mario 64, The only thing Is that there are a whole lot of new features to this game and everything else! The first new feature is Mario's companion FLUDD, Fludd Is a water tank nozzle that will help Mario clean off sticky substances and such, The second new feature is that this game's HUD Is now on an Island Instead of the Castle from Super Mario 64! But anyways, Super Mario sunshine is a 3D action adventure platformer game where you take the role of our hero Mario, As you help him run, jump, and clean his way through more then 9 big levels! The controls are pretty simple, You use the control stick to move, The A button to jump, The X and Y buttons to change FLUDD's transformations, and I forgot what B does! But as we are saying! Each of the game's levels are divided into seperate missions much like Super mario 64, each mission is crazier after the last! As you progress through the game, you will be collecting shine sprites, These objects are pretty much the game's currency If you ask me! You will actually need these to access new areas! FLUDD has many functions with him, And they are as followed, You have FLUDD''s typical jetpack mode which will let you fly in the air, You have the rocket nozzle which will launch you into the air, and there is the turbo nozzle which will let you zoom as supersonic speeds. Mario will encountering tons of enemies In his quest, Such as goombas, koopas, goop monsters, and every once In a while He will run into Shadow Mario who I will try to explain Later. Every once In a while you will also have to defeat some pretty tough bosses! Such as wiggler, Boo, Bowser, and many more. One last thing, Yosh is back and he Is better then ever! Mario can ride him to dash through tight areas and can also use him to swallow stuff! Anyways, That Is It for the gameplay!
Graphics-9/10
This game was released WAY earlier in the gamecube's life span! 2002 that is! And for what It Is worth, This game looked good years later, And today, It still looks GORGEOUS! Each level after the last has a very tropical and Island like feel that really makes you feel that you are on an Island, and That Is a huge plus! The levels differ from Islands, Amusment parks, Haunted houses, and tons of other stuff! And they are all very good! Now for the characters, They are pretty cool! The best part though Is how they alllook! This game was released early in the Gamecube's life span Like I said, and they really outdid theirselves with this game! Each character really looks like theirselve and That is Important! But anyways, You have our favorite plumber Mario, We have his girlfriend Peach, we have peach's dad toadsworth, And We also have two more new additions! And those are the piantas, and shadow Mario, The piantas are humble citizens that live around Isle delfino, And Shadow Mario Is a fake Mario that has accused Mario himself of the whole goop Incident! The HUD In this game Is pretty self explanatory, It displays your health, your amount of lives, and your current amount of Coins, shine sprites, and other cool stuff!
Sound-9/10
For years to come, the soundtrack to this game has always been my favorite part of the whole entire game, And This game's soundtrack is without a doubt some of THE catchiest music I have ever heard In a mario game! The game has a very tropical Island like feel to It, and the music really sounds Like It! Each song In every level Is bright, catchy, upbeat, and really grows on you after a while! The delfino Isle has bright Island like music, The haunted house In sirena beach has mysterious music playing as you try to find your way out of the house, and so on! Now for the sound effects, they are pretty nifty too! You have some typical Mario sound effects like the coin, the jump, the bumps, the boings, and so on! And they are all very good and cartoony sound effects that really make you feel you are in the Mario world! Lastly, the voice acting, And boy has It strengthed! The characters in this game talk all full sentences! And the voices for each of the characters has never ever gotten On my nerves, Mario has that silly funny italian accent we can't forget, Peach has that calm and quite girly voice, and yeah you get the point! Anyways, That Is It for the sound!
Addictiveness-9/10
The game Is actually really fun If you do know what you are doing! I mean, I remembered always playing this game everyday when I got the chance, and never ONCE has the game bored me to death! I mean, the game somewhat feels like a tropical version of Super Mario 64, But It is no problem! This game has clearly aged well and I can really tell! Collecting every shine sprite you earn feels really rewarding, especially In those tough missions in the haunted house!
Depth-9/10
This game Is clearly In my opinion, The biggest Mario game I have ever played! And I will tell you guys why! Well to start off, This game Is about 8-9 worlds long, So It will most likely take you about 4-5 hours to get through this whole entire game, And second, This game offers the player over 120 shine sprites to collect in total! And to this today, I can't still only get around 104! If you guys can help me with some of them, Just tell me!
Difficulty-7/10
Personally, I don't really think that this is the kind of game that will really make you turn into an agressive guy Like me, Well I'm just kidding! I'm never that agressive! But anyways, This game's challenge level Is actually pretty fair to be honest! Some levels like the watermelon challenge had played with my brain for years to come, While some other levels like the amusement park have really made the game fun! But If you're a big Mario fan like Me, then the game should give you a decent amount of challenge here and there!
Overall-8.2/10
All of us have been wanting a true sequel to Super Mario 64, and well, We actually got It! This game in my opinion is without a doubt one of the best 3D Mario games I have ever played! And I wanted to tell you why! Well to start off, The reason for my score on this game, I gave this game an 8.2 because It really stays true to Mario's classic roots, the koopas, the coin collecting, the platforming, and so on! The game Is also pretty long challenging and Offers alot to do! Anyways, This has been RedHotToddy's 124th review on vizzed, and well See you guys later in my 125th! I have came a long way In my reviewing quest, And I am offically at my peak! But anyways, Bye everyone on vizzed board! And please, If you see this game anywhere, Just buy It! You won't regret It!
