Hello readers of the many! I am MechaMento, incase you did not know, and today I will be giving my opinions and criticism towards the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) port of Mortal Kombat II. I hope you enjoy reading this and be sure to leave the odd reply to tell me what went well what did not. After this paragraph ends the real review starts. So Stop playing Pokemon, Turn off your music and engage your eyes as we step into the wonderful world of Mortal Kombat II.

Why I Played This Game

I was browsing through youtube, watching this channel that works for Machinima called Top Ten for the win. As you may suspect they made a lot of top tens, by a lot I mean every single video of theirs is a top ten! As a stereotypical young lad at the age of 10 I was into blood, violence and various other gorey things. So when I saw a video on that channel called Top Ten Goriest Video Games of all Time, I clicked on it with little thought. Most of the games that came up, like gears of war and ninja gaiden, I was not very interested in so it took me up to number two in the list which was Mortal Kombat to find a game I would want to play. After going on another youtube spree watching all of the Mortal Kombat 9 fatalities (and throwing up after watching every single one) I tried to find out if there was a site where I could play some of the older games on. You may be thinking I just went a long and found vizzed, bla bla bla, but no. I never found a secure site to play one on so I just brought Mortal Kombat the Arcade Collect over Xbox Live Arcade and absolutely loved it! About two or three years after buying it on the Xbox I came across Vizzed, from that I found you could play all of the retro classics and that brought me here!

Graphics

The Mortal Kombat developers took a different approach to their character designs to most other mainstream companies. The characters can be described as hyper-realistic since they look like humans, but they are in the game. A game from over 10 years back meaning there were no character models that look like humans like the well design Tom Lasky in Halo 4, so there was almost something revolutionary about this. The developers must of taken pictures of people well dressed as the game's cast. They must of taken a rather lot since the animations are generally smooth. The game does look kind of strange when reptile removes his mask for the player only to find his head is a lizard. The lizard head is certainly not hyper realistic like the rest of the character so it does not suit it and that is where the game went downhill in terms of graphics.
As for the background and battle grounds, they were well designed too and they suit the game and in some ways make the game feel more rough like it is supposed to. I think the acid on the first stage you will come across was very well made also the bridge stage looks rather epic in its own ways. If you compare the effort for this to the effort put towards making other Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) games, I think all of the graphic workers at the Mortal Kombat II team work really hard and really well to get a decent end product like this one.

Sound

The general game sound is not quite up as the graphics are. Most of the sound effects are distorted and in some cases you can not make them out as normal sound, they just come out as bits a of faint squeaking. That only happens to certain characters on certain stages, this only happens because of the similar pitch frequencies. I can understand this happening, because I make electronic music and if you have too much gain on one track it can ruin the rest of the song. Though this is an easy mistake to make I think the music and sound developers at the Mortal Kombat II team should of been just the slightest bit more careful since Mortal Kombat was a massive title back then so a sequel must be treated well and put up to the standard making the hit Mortal Kombat I.

Story

I was actually rather to find there was an actual story made for a fighting game, especially a fighting game like Mortal Kombat. However there is one and there is no point making a review without mentioning it in the slightest possible way or form. The story itself is as expected not very good.
Shao Khan is attacking the Earth for universe domination but ,the God / Superhuman, Raiden is not the happiest with his plans. They eventually settle on an agreement that they will set up a fighting tournament and the winner will fight Shao Khan, if he is defeated, that is the end of him and the game ends.
So all in all the story is very short, but I am not sure they even needed to waist their time creating one because let us be honest, that story is just pure crap. An arcade game does not need a story, it just needs to be addictive and serve it's purpose.

Addictiveness, Depth and Difficulty

Since Mortal Kombat II is an arcade game, it has to be addictive. The producers, publishers and the rest of Mortal Kombat team want to be rolling in the 20p (around 50 cent) coins or in this case the full price for the home console port. When you start you can not stop applies for a long time with a game with not much depth other than mashing all the buttons. This is rare really for a beat them up, I never felt the same way towards Super Street Fighter 2 but they are very different types of fighter. Mortal Kombat has a certain hyper-realistic kick to it that really sets the violent mood of the game. I am yet to play a game that has mimicked the game well enough to have me satisfied. Ever though you think your are doing well because it is so realistic, your are not because the game is pure easy. The Sega Mega Drive 3 button system makes the game much easier than the SNES port. Special moves and fatalities are easier to execute, the block button was removed so the Ai will never troll you by blocking. It is the Mortal Kombat game built for first timers and Noobs.

Thank you for taking the time to read my review, I know the Tour de Vizzed is on going so it is unlikely there will be many users that will actually stop posting and start reading. So if you did read I certainly thank you. Be sure to leave the odd tip, compliment or if you are feeling grumpy today, criticism.

Really great review man! You really have a great talent at writing reviews! You expanded upon each section you typed up, and you seem to know a lot about the game. After reading this, I might just go and play it! Great review!

Nice job! I have to wonder if you really wanted to review this game or just did it for the Tour de Vizzed. . Anyway, I only skimmed through it since I read a lot of reviews and I know what to look for, and it looks pretty good! Keep it up!

tgags123 : Certainly not! I enjoyed playing this game just as much as I enjoyed reviewing it. I may be striving for the yellow jersey but I enjoy making reviews. It was pokegeek who encouraged me to continue and today I have made 2 1000+ word reviews, and this was my first ever 1000+ word review ever! Well thank you for reading it / skimming my review!
Have you got any suggestions for games to review? I am running low on ideas!

MechaMento : Well I could use another review for my hack, Pokemon Aquamarine. Also, you could review some PS VITA games if you have played any of them.

tgags123 : I have only played one PS Vita game and I do not even remember the name. I am more of a Microsoft person but I adored the PS1 and the PS2 but the PS3 did not do the same job for me so I got an Xbox 360.
I have been thinking of making a pokemon review for a while but have never found a game with little reviews on so I think I might go and review your hack. I have only played it twice, I completely forgot about it so it would be nice to get back into.
