Good day fellow Vizzed members. While doing some research for a college paper I came across a story that was pretty interesting.

The story goes that a High School Football Coach in Utah suspended his entire 80-man football team after a 40-16 lose. But the coach didn't use the loss as the reason as to why he suspended the team. The coach said that he suspended his football team after he learned that some of his players were skipping class, had poor academic grades, and were caught cyber bullying a student. The coach said that he will allow any of his suspended players to rejoin the team if they...

1. Attended every class
2. Take a Character improvement coarse.
3. Maintain good grades or at least attempt to improve their grades if they are not doing well.
4. Do community service

There were other sorts of requirements, but they all sounded close to what I posted. If anyone has seen the movie Coach Carter with Samuel L Jackson. You would know that he did similar actions in order to improve his basketball teams' academics and character.

So what do you guys think about this. Do you support the coach's action and/or reasoning for suspending his entire football team? Do you think that other coaches should be more involved in caring about the player's academics and character (I'm not talking about cheating or giving benefits)?

Sounds like this coach has some common sense. And cares about the players and their lives outside football and after. He has my support.

I think this is absolutely incredible.  I really don't think he could have gotten away with such a bold mood if what he discovered about the students wasn't true.  I was actually JUST talking about this with a mentor and then students today.  They were telling me how.. in their middle school... kids actually did the homework because they knew if they didn't, there were consequences.  They weren't allowed to go to pep rallies, assemblies, or participate in any school events.

I think the coach has a fantastic head on his shoulders and is someone worth keeping around.  I mean, think about the impact he's having.  Not ONLY is he affecting his own team, but it's got to make a difference with other schools in the area as well.  Other kids in other schools will undoubtedly hear about this, and hopefully take their own work a little more seriously... out of appreciate or fear.  (We can hope, right?)

Agreed. I have read this story before, and I seriously doubt it had anything to do with the loss. The fact that they had a huge loss before this happened is just a diversion detail to make the story more confrontational. I think there are too many coaches who couldn't care less if their players were complete jerks to everyone and frankly scum of society. Just as long as they win their next ball game. That is okay with so many because there are quite a few who were like that when they were in high school, and quite a few are the same way still. I know too many coaches who only became a teacher so they could coach ball and could really care less about education. It is sickening.

To quote Brigand on this one, he has my support.

"The coach said that he suspended his football team after he learned that some of his players were skipping class, had poor academic grades, and were caught cyber bullying a student."

If only 'some' players were skipping class, why suspend every player on the team? Why not just suspend the players who were skipping, had low grades, etc. There is no way every single player on the team did something to warrant a suspension. It seems unfair that the players who were doing everything that was asked of them have to be punished for the actions of others.
