I'm not really sure why I started playing this game. Virtual Boy has many other titles, some much more iconic than this one, I have NO clue what the title of this game means, but thankfully the rest of the game is mainly in English. It is VERY hard to play without a controller. But, I overcame that and actually found myself playing a satisfying, challenging game.?
"Innsmouth no Yakata"?has a good horror feel as well as a sense of urgency, with it's ever pressing time limit. Gameplay may be simple, though the entire time all I could think of was how it reminded me of DOOM, it may be that everything is red (Thanks Virtual Boy!) but actually lot of the same elements do come into play. The controls can be a bit frustrating if you're using a keyboard (which I do) but it actually creates for a ?suspenseful experience for the better. After a bit of troubleshooting I found a scheme that works for me. Since it works like an FPS, here's what I used:
Up=W
Down=S
Left=A
Right=D
B button=V
A button=C
D-Pad Directions I made the Arrow Keys,
LeftBack= L.Shift
RightBack= Space.?

Anyway, once you adjusted to the controls of your favor, note that right back is your trigger, and leftback is reload (which trashes any remaining ammo)
The game starts out looking down a long hallway, with a timer ticking. You have 2 clips, 6 bullets each, and the player must choose which end of the hallway to go down. I begin travelling down the direction the game faced me at the start, with every step I move closer on the map provided to me, I hear a sound indicating I've moved forward, and the map tells me I've moved forward, but not much has changed. I began to pick up the pace. I come to a wall, and turn left, I move quickly down a rather familiar hallway. Suddenly, a large Bug-Eyed creature appears and claws away 2 of my 4 hearts. I try and fire my gun and miss all 6 shots, forgetting how to reload I back up and run back where I came. The monster is moving closer at a beatable, but disconcerting pace. I go down the path until I come to where I started. Heading down the other path, half dead I come across another beast. It has the same head, however, it only has a pair of legs, unlike the previous one, which had a bear like body. Doesn't matter really, It scrapes me once, I scramble to remember what I set the reload key to, I run back into the other beast, and die.?
Game Over.?
I get given a password to return to level one. Awesome. Though useless at the time, it was nice to know the game input the code right away and started the level with my ammo and health back. Such a feature was welcomed as I died in later levels. But before I got to those levels, I died and or ran out of time about 4 more times. I adjusted my controls to what I mentioned earlier, and tried again. It also is worth mentioning that each time I played it again, the map was different. It was still linear, but I was making more turns and picking up extra ammo and hearts that were not around on my first attempt. Finally, I kill the big monster with 3 rounds, and find a key, then I find a white orb and a black orb. I backtrack and kill the smaller beast, only taking 2 bullets, and find a door. I beat the first level! The game gives me a new password and a chart showing that I have about 15 more levels to do, each with multiple paths and 4 different endings. Sounds long and boring at first, but actually things get better.
The next level still had the two types of monsters, but there were more of them, and the paths had forks and doorways to short-cut between halls. The white and black orbs also became ?notably useful once the gameplay picked up. White orbs show you the entire layout on your map, as opposed to just the rooms you've been in, and the black orb shows where the white orb, exit key, and exit are. With multiple paths I was able to avoid fighting monsters, which I didn't feel bad about since the orbs showed I didn't have to get past them anyway.
Even when I had to fight the creatures, I found that after shooting them once, the games seems like there's a delay, but actually just the monster has paused, allowing you to either escape, or fire off enough shots to kill him. This makes things much easier, though monsters in later levels took at least 4 shots to kill. Running low on ammo is not ideal. Stronger monsters also can break through walls, creating new gaps between hallways not shown on the map. I found this actually pretty cool. It added more depth than before. Without the map though, it can get pretty confusing and at times I got lost and the time limit ran out on me. The levels do take a while to complete, sometimes I would be down to the last second making it to the level winning door. Having Vizzed's save state option was really convenient, but the password option is still there if you're someone who's into that. Plus, inputting the password starts you out with the standard (but not max) amount of health and two clips. This makes things much easier when you make it through the door with one hit point left and no bullets, as I did many times.
I won't spoil what's further down the paths and any of the endings, heck I only got 1 of the 4! But there is major satisfaction after going through all those levels and dying 30 times.
If you can find controls that are comfortable and the patience to play, this game actually offers some pretty nostalgic, challenging, arcade gaming. It also works really well with the Virtual Boy's always red display. If someone hooked up a controller I bet this game would be a much easier (and quicker) experience. Yet this game is still playable without it, in my opinion.?
Don't let the bizarre name, red graphics, and rather unforgiving difficulty keep you from a valuable game lost in a failed system.
