I never actually knew about this despite the fact it was heavily rumoured to have happened. Short and narrow is that a planes safety features made it jetison its bombs, which happened to be 260 times more powerfull than the ones used against japan.
The 2nd of the 2 bombs jetissoned went through all but one of its pre detonation checks.

Given its strength, its position on the eastern seaboard and its proximity to the capital it could have had deadly consequences.

Yes, I've heard of this. It was a hydrogen bomb. Given the circumstances, it should have exploded. But, some safety procedures on the plane stopped it from exploding, saving almost the whole radius around it. Like you said, if it were to explode, the capital could have been easily affected.

Disaster averted.

I heard something about that. Good thing it didn't happen right? That would have been...bad to say the least. Very lucky break right there.

Wow, that's incredible, it's hard to imagine how easily the history of the world could have changed.

Btw, this isn't the first time a freaking atomic bomb was dropped on the Carolinas. In 1958 a captain of a B2 bomber released a mark 6 bomb by accidentally pulling the emergency release pin while trying to help himself up.

Fortunately the bomb's plutonium core hadn't been armed but, it did contain 7,000 pounds of conventional explosives, which destroyed a house in Florence, SC(where I was born). You can still go look at the crater it made.

and this is exactly why some nation leader needs to man up, point his nukes at every country that has some, and say "disarm and destroy all nuclear weaponry or everything dies".

these weapons are a travesty to begin with. im sure the people making them had the best of intentions(to them) in mind, ending a war quickly, less time suffering, all that jazz. but the fact is that these weapons cause more pain and suffering, and more death, then anything else in the known history of our world. just the fact that these things exists, leaves the possibility open for someone to screw up somewhere, and cause a chain reaction of nuclear weapons going off. once that happens, were all screwed because of an "accident"
