Does anyone (other than David of course) have any experience in website creating, coding, programming, etc.? Do any of you have your own websites? Have any of you ever helped in the creation of a website? I am familiar with HTML and CSS, but I have never attempted to create a website. If I wanted to, I might be able to figure out how to make a simple one, but that is probably it. What are your experiences?

I have a bit of experience, nothing that much. I tried to create a website when I was 8, but that was taken down because I was using official pictures from official companies without permission. Then, in about sixth grade, I made a free website that was sponsored by something for a project.

Ah, yes, I have experiences in programming, website coding and designing, though I don't have a website of my own yet (I'm planning to make one in the future) because I can't pay online for hosting expenses yet. If I were to seriously make a website of my own, I'd rather have one that isn't free so I'll have full control.

We design websites through xxamp by using local host. I'm also currently helping with the creation of a school client's portal and a windows 8 map application.

For more infos on what I know about programming, I've included it on my profile's bio a long time ago. (I didn't know it would actually come in handy).

edit: I know programming, coding and designing since I'm currently a Computer Science student. But then, I am "not" an expert.

HTML and CSS are fairly easy to learn. Was taught HTML at college and taught myself the very basics of CSS.

The main things most people forget are to close their tags (this one makes me want to scream) and poor design (let's not go there, I don't think I can afford your therapy fees).

Here's some stuff that may be useful:

http://htmldog.com/
Tutorials and references. Used the references section recently for my assignment (Web Technologies module for my degree).

http://w3fools.com/
Why W3Schools is a very bad thing (apart from my personal experiences with the TryMe being a total diva in Firefox 22/23).

http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/
The W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) are the people who define web standards. This checks the CSS for validity.

http://validator.w3.org/
As above but for X/HTML.

http://colorschemedesigner.com/
I've found this useful to quickly figure out colour schemes.

http://www.worstoftheweb.com/
Examples of how not to design webpages.

Looking at other websites to see how they're assembled:
Firefox allows you to inspect elements to see how they're done.
I've been guilty of this and sometimes it really helps and other times it makes me think "they've just done a really poor practice with that bit".

I am a professional website designer and developer. Because it's one of my main hobbies and my profession, I have created more websites than I can remember.

I can write HTML and CSS by hand, I know them pretty much inside out. I can also write Javascript, jQuery, XML, and AJAX. I also know server-side languages like mySQL and PHP pretty well, they are extremely useful in developing a large dynamic website. I also create and manage mySQL databases, which is how data is stored on a website (for example, everyone's username and user stats on Vizzed are stored in a database).

It is also very possible to learn the basics by studying at home. I learned HTML and CSS by myself, and went to school for everything else, but the key to grasping it is really is practicing on your own time. Once you're familiar with the logic behind how to write your own code, you can apply it to any language you choose to learn. The rest is just learning specific terms and syntax unique to each language.

Here are some useful resources:

I'm a web designer by trade, so I work on a lot of different web sites. It's really a nice job but it can be pretty nerve-wracking trying to come up with a design from scratch--I'm talking a company that doesn't even have a proper logo! I'd link some of the sites I've worked on professionally but honestly, due to client demands I'm not very proud of the way they look. That's kind of embarrassing, huh?

I used to make sites in notepad as plain HTML files, then started making a few sites entirely in Flash. Oh boy was that a bad idea! At the time I had no idea what SEO was, or even that you could get stuff to appear in search engines. Now I write my sites in either vim or Notepad++, and although it's still mostly plain HTML, I use php files to ease editing design elements that exist across all pages.

My biggest achievement right now is QualityRoms, which although severely lacking in the "quantity" department, has a very nice (I think) design and working feel. It was kind of my first attempt at making a site with a database and dynamically generated content. I kind of cheated though because I just piggy backed off of my forum's user database and everything is handled by that database. =)

I'm currently working with a friend who runs Retro of the Week, which I helped design, to start a new gaming blog. It's going to be a big deal and I really want to do it right, which means I've been avoiding doing it at all for months. >.> Like I said earlier, designing a site from absolutely nothing is... difficult.

Oh, I guess I also have my pretty unspectacular portfolio site which I ignore with a white-hot intensity.

But yeah, if you need any help or have any questions, you can definitely ask me. I won't promise I'll answer quickly, but I will help out. It's probably best to get a hold of me on Steam, since that's the only thing I check with any frequency anymore.

Juliet : I didn't know you were a CS major... Or that you were posting on Vizzed again. Welcome back. You probably don't remember me but I was a pretty big deal during your absence. If you, or anyone else in this thread, want some free hosting, I have more than enough bandwidth and storage space, though you'll have to deal with no Cpanel and buy your own domain.

Carnas : I know, right? Like every wordpress design ever has the worst coding.

Lazlo Falconi : Thanks. Nah, I remember you. Specially because Lazlo without the letter 'L' after the 'Z' is actually my surname, so it had been easy for me to remember you. And I've also heard about you from different users. I'll make sure to remember your offer.

I haven’t created a website from scratch, but I have helped out the founder of I website I used to be on (as another admin), so pretty much, I know a lot about CSS and HTML those are pretty much the two main things needed for the site.

tgags123 : I do have experience on creating websites, actually. I have over a whole year of experience, even before I joined here.

I had made some websites, but they died off quickly and closed it with only about 100 members. I am planning to make a new one in the future. And yes, I can help you create a website, if you want.
