I always thought that they came back as cyborgs (temporarily).
But according to the Star Fox wiki, it's actually just piloting assistance.
If that's true, then why does Star Wolf have. . . *snicker* band aids on?

Cornerian band aids for sale, our band aids are the best in the whole galaxy!
And when it's time to take them off, they won't leave anything sticky on
your sensitive fur. And it's only 19.99!

Apparently Star Wolf is a pretty good pilot to
not need the gear that everyone else is using.

I noticed that Leon is using one eyepiece, and that
Pigma and Andrew have to use two.

So, apparently Leon isn't too shabby a pilot either.

Well, they had to have some way to show to the player this isn't the average Star Wolf, that for getting to Venom's back door, you'll have a real challenge. Sadly, they aren't much of one, and they barely touch the others by the time I'm through with them.

Normal or hard mode?

I found them very hard on expert mode.
But even then all I needed was some practice
and it became a lot easier. 

But, now that I haven't done it in a while, I'd bet that I'd
do pretty badly.
