If you guys do not know what Mario party is, then I will just tell you, Mario party is a party game where you and 3 other friends play wacky and imaginative minigames and do all sorts of crazy stuff, So far the series started in 1999 and it is currently on it's 13th or so installment! Yeah, they are making one for the 3DS called Mario party 3D (I'm not 100% if that is the title but oh well) So let's take some time and review the sequel to the sleeper hit! This is Mario party 2 for the Nintendo 64. Will this one bring all kinds of new stuff or will it just end up like certain other sequels? Let's find out!
Story-7/10
The plot behind this game is that over in the mushroom kingdom Mario and his friends are having a teleconference about making an all new land and what the name should be, Mario decides that the place should be called "Mario Land" While his arch-nemesis Wario says that the land should be called well..."Wario Land!" But just then! Mario's enemy bowser is watching all of this from above, He then starts complaining and then...Toad says to Mario and his friends that whoever can defeat Bowser will get to have their very own world named after theirselves! (I:E Mario land, Luigi land, yoshi land, peach land, and so on.) But anyways, that is the story, let's now get on to the gameplay!
Gameplay-8/10
Mario party 2 brings a whole lot of new stuff to the table, The first new thing is how much of everything there is this time around! This game features now over +65 minigames! That is alot, so the game modes in this game are as followed, Story mode has you going on a huge quest to defeat and have your own world named after you, Party mode lets you play through any board of your choice and with your own set rules, and the minigame mode lets you play any minigames that you have unlocked through the story mode, The minigames are organized by many many categories, 4-player, 1 vs 3, 2 on 2, and so on. But anyways, the actual gameplay on the game's boards is as it was in the first game, you and three other players compete with eachother to collect the most power stars and whatnot! Whoever has the most by the end of the game is considered the partystar! The boards this time around are crazier as they can get, They consist from space stations, haunted houses, old deserts, and so on. The minigames are the real puncher here though, they are so crazy only Nintendo can think this stuff up! Some have you jumping over ropes of fire, sneaking over chain chomps, and so on. When you come to think of it, the minigames in Mario party are like the weapons in ratchet and clank! As the series progresses, the developers keep coming up with new fresh ideas for things! Anyways, I guess that is it for the gameplay!
Graphics-8/10
The graphics have really stepped up from the first title, This time around everything looks way more clean fresh, and well, Dazzling! The first one looked pretty good, but nowhere near good as this one, As in every Mario game ever made, all the levels and worlds are just a blast to explore! Some worlds take place in the desert, some take place in space, one takes place in a haunted house, and so on. As for the characters, they are better then ever! The first cool addition is that they can know where costumes! For example, Mario can dress up as an astronaut, a safari hunter, and so on! The HUD in each game board is pretty self explanatory, It displays how much coins everyone has collected and all stars they have gotten. Oh yeah, this game was made in 2000, one of the Nintendo 64's last years before it died out, then that year we got Mario party 3 which I will have to review tomorrow! Anyways, that is it for the graphics!!
Sound-7/10
The sound in Mario party 2 is pretty self explanatory, you get some basic sounding Mario tunes here and there, And for what they are worth, they are all really good! Most of them really suit the mood of each level in the game while some of them are just eh, Now as for the sound effects, they are your typical fare, you get some basic sounding thuds, booms, boings, and a whole lot of other stuff. In all other Mario games, the soundtrack is very catchy and upbeat and helps you prepare for each level after the next, and this game is not an exception when It comes to that.
Addictiveness-8/10
The game was pretty fun back then in 2000, and today, It actually still is! The thing about Mario that makes it so addicting is just the minigames! They all feel fun challenging and well, they keep coming up with new ideas for more and more of them! Not to mention, this game was made for the Nintendo 64, so of course it had alot of training to do before the newer ones like Mario party 6 could topple it off! That is what I think makes Mario party as a franchise so addicting.
Depth-9/10
This game is the sequel, so of course there is going to be a whole lot of new stuff to the table, and well, Here, the game offers more then +65 minigames to enjoy with you and your friends! And plus, the game offers more then 3 distinct game modes, and that actually feels like alot to me! Oh yeah um, the story mode is about 8 worlds long, so that will most likely take you about 2-5 hours to finish completely. So yeah, the multiplayer is really the kicker here! In multiplayer mode, you can grab three other friends and play all those cool fun and wacky minigames and everything else with them! The pushing, the shoving, the screaming, yeah, multiplayer at it's finest!
Difficulty-5/10
I don't see why games like Mario party should give you any trouble, I mean it is just a party game! Oh wait, the game offers SOME pretty challenging, such as the one where you sneak across the chain-chomp, or the one where you must avoid getting blown up by a pirate ship while walking on a very steep yet large platform. Oh well, it is Nintendo, so what to expect? You can also adjust the difficulty for the CPUs on most occasions, and that is no biggie!
Overall-8.6/10
If you need a serious Mario party fix, look no forward then this one! I mean seriously though, +65 minigames, +4 game modes, +8 unique game modes to party on! It's a Mario party fan's dream! I gave this game a 8.6 because how much it offers for you to do! So anyways, this has been my 105th review, I got a new layout, a new personality, and well, new everything! So anyways, this has been your all-time favorite reviewer RedHotToddy, and I am off!
