The Sim City series is a well-known series, known for its unique style of gameplay which allows you to build and manage your own city, while combating problems such as pollution, waste management, nuclear meltdowns, debt and even Mother Nature itself. The series has its origins back in '85, when it was known as Micropolis. The first version was released on the Commodore 64. The gameplay of this game was alien to the gaming world of the 1980's; it could be neither lost nor won. The game was the first of its kind-and proved popular enough to spawn numerous sequels. The review below may partly explain why.
Firstly, the graphics. The graphics for this game are both disappointing and impressing. The main zones all take different appearances as they develop(residential areas can become schools and hospitals, thus changing the design)so that it never really sticks to the same design, constantly changing as it develops and runs down over a period of time. Some of the other buildings, however, just stick to the same design all throughout the game, and some of these designs are just bland, or plain terrible to look at, such as the Sea Port. Once the city becomes a metropolis, it will probably just look like an array of scrambled pixels which are meant to look like houses, but look more like an endless pattern. An area that the game has succeeded in is the color, which looks vibrant and fresh. The parks in Summer appear to be full of life, and the seasons are easily distinguished from one another. The flashing PD or FD symbols on top of the PD/FD Headquarters are nice to look at. Tornadoes change color when passing over water or land, as well. Overall, I'd give the graphics a 7.
Sound is next up. Again, I am simultaneously disappointed and impressed by the sounds of this game. The village and town themes are very dull and boring to listen to. I know that the village theme is meant to sound humble and peaceful-with it being a village and all-but I think it is a very boring piece of music. It also irritates me so much that I have to turn the music off, but then the game just seems to lose all character so I have to turn it up again. It would certainly top my list of most annoying video game music if I made one. The town theme I also hate because I think it would suit a city more. It seems to be filled with a sense of achievement. Also, the melody pierces my ears. I just really hate it. But the metropolis theme is a personal favorite for me. It really does sound like you are accomplishing something, and that your city is bustling and busy. Sort of reminds me of London, really. I didn't like the Capital theme. It gave me a strange feeling, like something bad was going to happen, and total disaster was inevitable. It kept me on edge, and it gives me a sort of hopeless feel. About 1:10 second in, it sort of turns into a music piece that says "You can never make it, give up now" . I think it sounds like that anyway. The actual sounds of the game were pretty much limited to only a few sounds. That Train horn, that Boat horn, that Airplane taking off, placing down a zone/building, the cheering after placing down a stadium, fire spreading....there are a few more, but I dislike all of these sounds. Always have, so I am going to give the sounds a 6.
Addictiveness is where this game gets interesting. I think it ranges and varies depending on the person. But for me, I always need to finish a project off when I have started it. And when I do, a new one pops up anyway. You'd naturally want to perfect your city in every way, decreasing crime, land value, pollution and unemployment are a few things you need to do. Other jobs include raising enough money for your city by wisely increasing and decreasing the tax rates and funds for the police, fire and transport departments, eventually producing enough money to build your city to the maximum level. Or you can just cheat. You would also want to have a nice, big, prestigious Mario statue in your city. Which is the best item to have, since you need a population of 500, 000. Or yet again, you could just cheat. You can try to get every single reward, such as the casino, amusement park, windmill, etc.. This game has quite a few things you need to do if you want to make the perfect city, and can get you hooked very easily. I shall give this a 9, because I'm not sure how many people would feel this way.
The depth of this game is quite hard to explain. As I mentioned in the Addictiveness section, this game would take a while to perfect. This sort of links with this factor. It will possibly take a while to turn your city into a megalopis, but it will take much longer to solve every problem possible(or at least minimize its effect on the city) and use every feature efficiently in order to make your city the perfect place to live. There is a problem, however. The game has very few actual buildings that serve as a necessity in your city. You don't really need an Expo, or Library. Just Fire Departments, Police Departments, Residential Zones, Commercial Zones, Industrial Zones, and at least one power station if you wanted to increase your population to about 9, 000 -10, 000. Most of the buildings in the game are just there to suppress 'caps' which are placed on the population, such as Sea Ports, Stadiums and Airports. The game is quite big, however. Your city has no limits(except for that black void to the North, East, South and West like every city has, of course) so you can make it as big or as little as you want, as long as it is inside the boundaries. I shall give this an 8.
Finally, difficulty. I don't really think this game has a difficulty, you just need a strategic approach to taxes and funds. You would also probably need a quick thinking mind to deal with certain disasters, such as Bowser, Plane Crashes and Floods. You need to plan your city out and then use your head to strategically place down Police Departments or Fire Departments in order to cover a large area. Saying that, I don't think there is a real difficulty, it depends on your mindset. Or an online guide which you got from the Internet. Either way, I will give it a 5, because it can be really hard for some people and really easy for others.
So that was my SimCity review-my longest by far. Lets do a recount of the scores. Graphics: 7! Sound: 6! Addictiveness: 9! Depth: 8! Difficulty: 5!
So, the overall score, according to mean, should be...A decent score of 7. Thank you for reading. Good bye! |
