The video game era started since 'Pong' was released! Now we have lots of new...suggestive video games. Honestly...there's lots of violent video games that also have content that are demeaning to women like GTA. The fan base to games like COD are very crude. I miss when video games were cartoony. Kinda like Nintendo. Now games have, like no imagination. The only good games nowadays are the Super Smash games, Nintendo games, Ni No Kuni, etc. I miss the 90's Video game era. I'm the only kid at school who owns a Nintendo 64, and I regret nothing. Here's the difference.

Before:Imaginary games that are fun for the family. Like, who could come up with a Fox with a space ship or an italian plumber? Nintendo and other video game brands had lots of imaginary

After:Lots of crude violence, and unoriginal games

But case in point, you kinda have Nintendo to blame here. The birth of violent games was Goldeneye 007 on the Nintendo 64. Then games became more violent.

I agree with you. Goldeneye 007 was violent yet if this game were to be made in this era it would seem like a good fit with violence and adventure plus Goldeneye 007 would actually to be less violent then  the games that are made now. Plus it seem like kids are actually into these violent games that are made now, yet the kids who are into Mario and Pokémon do know what there playing besides all these games with gore and stuff. So what I'm saying is that these games are getting somewhat better and worse so I'm not sure If I like these new games or decide to think that these games are getting worse.

Yes the games have gotten much worse and I would be here for a while if I stated all the reasons why, but to your point about demeaning women please grow a set because that is just a stupid and pointless statement to be made especially about one of the few good franchises not from nintendo in the GTA series. Regardless I hope they one day go back to hard to beat and unforgiving games that were original and had story and likeable and great characters

UFC : "Please grow a set...that is just a stupid and pointless statement..."? Please try not to be rude or harsh with others. That was a bit too far to be honest. Quiet frankly, I agree with him on that point, 100%. And I feel it was a legitimate point. For a reason, read on (I know it's a lengthy post, sorry about that).

PixelBrick : First off, I apologize for the double summon here. That said, I agree with you on parts of this. I actually made a thread a while back about gamers with more conservative moral standards being slowly pushed out of the gaming world, and your statements are along the same lines in ways. I'm glad to see that some other people agree with me on it. Hey, if they want to make games with intense violence or sexual content and such in them, I won't object. But must they incorporate these things into every "serious" game? It's quickly getting to that point, and it's a real shame. Gamers like myself are being forced to drop the kinds of games we actually like, and take up genres that we've never been that big on. Pretty soon, we'll be stuck on Mario, Sonic, and the like. I can't find a good RPG that isn't rated for sexual content and/or "language". And don't expect to find a shooter of any sort that doesn't contain excessive gore. I mean a shooter can be fun and addictive, without having to see entrails, heads flying off of bodies, and blood spraying out of some guy's chest like water from a hose.
It's kind of like movies: I watch movies, but I avoid R rated (and usually PG-13). The movie industry isn't forcing us out like this, so why are game industries?

Basically, the game industry needs to realize that not everyone is the same, and just because we like action, doesn't mean we all want to hear swear words or see sex thrown around like that in our games. We can't write it off as "Realism", and I'm tired of hearing that defense honestly. And if people must call it realism, then accept the fact that video games are popular because they aren't completely realistic. We want entertainment, not reality. Why pay $400 for a system that plays exactly what you hear outside or see on the news or other channels? In that respect, yes, games are going downhill. In others, they're getting better. Now if someone would just break the mold and be original rather than reproducing the same stuff every other developer does.

And I'll leave you with a thought: when was the last time you watched a movie or played a game, and walked away saying "You know, that movie/game was good, but it would have been better if they would have used more swearing in the dialogue"?

PixelBrick :
I think video games have gotten worse ever since call of duty came in 2003, al the game is is just shooting people and shooting people and shooting people! You think they would kick it up a notch, but no, we just keep getting endless sequels, black ops, world at war, modern warfare, and the worst of them all, Call of duty ghosts!

I have to disagree with you on the whole 'this started with 007 for the N64. That was mild compared to some games on the earlier consoles. Look at Mortal Kombat II and III for the SNES and Genesis. You have characters smashing heads, ripping off limbs, eating heads, ripping out spinal cords, freezing people and shattering them, and the list goes on. Or how about Splatterhouse for the Genesis, which is to this day regarded as one of the most gruesome games made when taking into consideration the capabilities of the system.  Wolfenstein 3D was for SNES as well. That was another first person shooter game that was very much like Doom. Speaking of which, what about Doom? That game was one of the most violent games created until the previous generation games. Duke Nukem 3D was just as gory as doom, but add nudity in a strip club. But you can find violence before then. For the atari, there was Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Sure, it is not flashy, bloody, gory, etc. But you are Leatherface with your chainsaw killing people. Also for the atari, there as the game where you were General Custer in his birthday suit with an erection, and you had to dodge your way through falling arrows to rape the nude Native American girl on the other side of the screen. For the NES, you have Rush n' Attack. You are a special force operative charging through enemy bases stabbing everyone with your commando knife. Again, not as gory and not FPS, but the content is just as violent.

Saying this all started with N64's 007 is highly naive. Violence was a part of the games of the generation you hold dear as child friendly and imaginative. And for degrading weapon, look no later than Atari where your goal was to rape Native Americans or gut people with your chainsaw.

PixelBrick : I am also the only one with a N64 and SNES. I think that the video games today are warping the meaning of video games. They are meant to provide good entertainment and something to remember for the rest of your gaming life. Call of Duty is just shooting people, then blowing stuff up and then going online to do the exact same thing and people smash up their consoles because they can't come first in free for all or team deathmatch. People usually think that I am one of those stereotypical 13 year old CoD players but that is just the perfect description for my friends. I think games are worse now because they have lost their soul and colorful characters. I even think that the Pokemon and Mario games are ruined now, and Nintendo is the inferior games company overshadowed by the overrated Xbox and Playstation.

I agree with you on everything you said. I do think that video games are going downhill. I'm just adding to your point on the violent games here, but the violent games are the ones that people talk about the most at my school and it really ticks me off. If only people payed more attention to classic games like Super Mario Bros. and Galaga.

Have video games gotten better or worse?, well it depends on what perspective you look at. From the perspective of graphics yes video games have improved a great amount graphics wise so they got better. Now when you look at it from a creativity perspective, video games haven't really improved all that much like the Pokemon franchise for example, same game same point for playing same exact story just with significantly better graphics so it didn't really get any better from creativity wise.
