So I've decided to make a hack of PKMN Fire Red but I don't know where to start. What kind of tools would I need to use to change the map, story, etc. etc. and would I need to know any coding languages? The extent of my knowledge of game mechanics or whatever it's called is reading example code for installing a mod to Skyrim. Any tip would be appreciated.

Try reading the ROM hacking guide at the top of this thread... 

its a great place to start... 

also Google... that helps...

I learned all I needed from trial and error... and a few tools from PokeCommunity.com... 

a little research (on your own) goes a loooong way... (or just open your eyes and read the thread on the VERY SAME FORUM that you posted this question.
