OK, so this is off the bat one of the best games I have played, but it does have some flaws, thus the 9.7. First of all, the sound.
Sound.
The music and sounds in the game are some of the best I have seen, or heard. The combat system plays directly into the music, which is something new and exciting to most western gamers. With a sound index at the start of the game, you can listen to your favorite pieces from the game and remember those scenes.
Graphics.
Despite the fact that this game is on an outdated console, the graphics truly stand the test of time. The cartoon-ish style but still somewhat realistic settings combine for a visually beautiful backdrop for a wonderful game. Although some of the sprites may seem strange at first sight, they most often play into the story in some way or another.
Addictiveness.
This game is very immersive experience, containing countless amounts of tasks and Easter eggs to find and do. This game really gets better and better the more you play it, no matter how you play. Little bits of hidden stories are scattered throughout the world, and they keep you coming back to unravel the full story of Tazmily Village.
Story.
While this game is impressive in almost every feature, it truly shines the most when it comes to the story. (I may accidentally say small spoilers, so if you don't want to find out anything that happens, skip down to the next session.) OK, so, now that I can feel free to post mild spoilers, here I go. The story in this game is like something you would see in a book. You have the scrawny, sheltered main character, Lucas, who develops throughout the game to become a strong, confident main character. You have the thief who does not know what to steal, Duster, who becomes a powerful force for good as the story progresses. You have the non-feminine princess, Kumatora, whose magic is unmatched throughout the land, and then you have Boney, the lovable, loyal best friend / dog to Lucas. The enemies in this game range from the feeble mole cricket, to powerful chimeras, ( animals that were mixed with robotic parts to become more dangerous) to statues with near infinite health. The main enemies in this game, are the Pigmasks, people who have been persuaded by their leader to rebuild the world in their leaders image. If you have played Earthbound, there are many references back to the travels of Ness and co. The rich story to the game is one feature of the game that sets it apart from the more popular games of the time such as Pokémon, which has little to no story. Another thing that this game has is a rich history that goes back to before Earthbound, and encompasses ages that build up to a believable story with surprises at every turn. A part of the game that I believe makes it so enjoyable, is that it seems like it is a real history, but it also seems impossible. The game itself seems almost like an interactive history textbook for the world that you are playing in.
Depth.
This game, while not being massive, still feels very open. Most of the world is accessible at any time, so you can always visit flint, or Reggie, no matter when you want to. As you play, the world gets bigger and bigger, and stronger and stronger enemies arise. The game takes hours to beat and you may never fully finish it and learn the full story. (Helpful hint. at the credit scene, keep moving the d-pad.) This is one of the only games that ever made me emotional while playing, and it seems like everything changes, but at the same time, everything stays the same.
Difficulty.
The controls in this game are standard on the Game Boy advanced. However, some parts of the controls can be a bit fumbly at first. One part of the game that will always be in my mind is the ingenious combat system, With a good knowledge of your team, and a strategic use of items, you can overcome huge disadvantages, but if not you can be easily defeated. This game keeps you on your toes until the very end, so keep your wits about you at all times.
Overview. As a game, this is an experience I believe everyone should have, the story is emotional, deep and immersive. The graphics are timeless, and the sound is stunning. The world is massive, and you will keep coming back to play it again and again. I may go so far as to call this game the Skyrim of the GameBoy.
