When you excercise, do you do it to lose weight or put on muscle?

What do you want out of your workout? Are you trying to put on as muscle as possible, fat be damned? Are you just trying to slim down, with muscle tone itself taking a back seat? Or is it really smack dab in the middle?

What sorts of physical activity do you do to achieve your goals?


Me, personally, I don't really care too much for slimming down, and would rather lift weights to put on muscle quickly.

You know, muscle naturally burns more calories than fat does. That means the more muscular you are, the more calories you burn a day. So if you a very muscular, it becomes easier to keep the fat off.

When I actually exercise, I exercise to try to bulk up. Every time I get to 160 pounds, I can not keep it on. I drop down to about 152 or 153, get back up to 165 pounds, then drop back down... and then repeat the cycle every month and a half. It sucks.

I exercise to get the majority of my frame and figure to be medium and my arms to get bigger.
I have difficulty keeping the weight on. I always have to be eating.
Getting to 150 is a struggle. I can always maintain a good 140 to 145 lbs.
I mess around with more arm exercises than any other part of my body.
If I miss a day of a good arm workout? My arms look too slim regardless of what they can do.

Back in 2006 I had a phase of an unhealthy workout obsession to get arms as big as some of the kids that were younger than I at work.
Till I found out that they were on "the roids". (In 2008. They looked like "M.Phelps" but did not eat much. One of their "Buds/Bros" filled me in on their secret. I smiled for at least a good month.)
After that?
I developed a more healthy self image.
But still...
I have to constantly workout to keep my arms a decent looking pair.

Other than that? I favour the military P.T. Standards. They are simple and do not consume too much of a persons time. (Plus it may come in handy to be in that kind of shape anyway. "Always be prepared".)

I am a firm believer in your job defining your physical frame.
I see no need to have a Law professor bench 300+ lbs.
But if you work in a Labor? Then you should be at least fairly fit.

I exercise to gain more bulk and muscle.   I play both Rugby and Canadian Football and those both take a lot of strength to play.  Especially Rugby, it's probably the most physically demanding sport I've ever played.

I exercise to maintain my ideal weight and develop good work-out habits. I need the habits because I eat a lot, and since I will start to not be able to be as active when I grow older, I would then start to rapidly gain weight, which I don't want to happen. So I don't really want to be all muscular, but just normal.

Even though I really don't work out a whole lot, I like to keep in shape. I am not an exercise freak lifting 500 tons a day but I do like to maintain a good weight balance and stay in shape. Other than that I am pretty slim I guess, I only weigh 130 for a 15 year old but I do like to stay in shape and exercise and be active frequently because it is good for you.

I work out to do a blend of both, but I can never decide what's more important to me, so often I stagnate instead of make any sort of growth. I tend to lose weight faster than I build muscle, though, so when I do get back on a workout schedule, my intention is to try to get down to about 185 before adding 15 pounds of muscle. We'll see how that works, though!

Like for me, I'm only 5'6", but have a very thick chest and legs. My max muscular weight at 10% bodyfat will only be about 175.
