Summary:
This is a game where you are a 10-year old kid sent out alone into the world of Pokémon to catch ‘em all, and to challenge the Pokémon league, defeat the reigning champion, and become the champion of the Hoenn region! On the way, though, you must battle each of the eight gym leaders scattered across the land with the team of Pokémon that you have captured and trained as your very own. Many others aspire to be the champion, too, though, and you'll be constantly challenged by other trainers on your path to glory. On your grand journey over land and sea, you just might stop an apocalyptic event or two, and even get to challenge ancient deities! This is more than a game - it’s an experience!

Graphics: 8.0

The graphics in this game are the same as Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, colorful and bright. The sprites, in particular, are very good. In Pokémon Emerald, each Pokémon has been given their own entrance animations for when you send them out or when they are sent out against you, which is a big step up from the previous games. In battle, the backgrounds are as bland as ever, unfortunately. I only gave the graphics an 8.0 because good as they are, they're largely unchanged from two years prior, and that’s a shame.

Sound: 9.0

Wow! All of the songs in this game are very well done. The battle tunes stood out to me, although the themes that play in towns and on routes are also very good. The reason I gave the sound a 9.0 is because I believe that the soundtrack in Emerald is better than Ruby and Sapphire because of the inclusion of the Battle Frontier theme and the theme that plays when you battle one of the seven Frontier Brains (post-game bosses). To me, those two songs alone were worth an extra point just because they are so good. The only reason the sound wasn't given a 10 is because I personally feel that the soundtrack relies way too much on trumpets and other brass. Don’t get me wrong, though, the soundtrack is still great. Also, each Pokemon has their own "cry", which is a sound clip played when they are sent out. They amount to nothing more than weird electronic noises, but that can be attributed to the GBA.

Addictiveness:10

This game is extremely addictive. I found myself replaying the game again and again, each time playing with a different team of Pokémon, seeing which team worked best. I've played this game at least five times through, and I haven't yet gotten bored with it.

Story: 6

Let’s be honest here, the Pokémon games are not known for great stories. Beat all the gym leaders, stop the evil in the region, and conquer the Pokémon league. Although, in Emerald, the story is a lot more substantial than in Ruby and Sapphire. Instead of stopping just Team Aqua or Team Magma, now you have to stop both! Team Aqua is bent on expanding the seas to give aquatic Pokémon a larger habitat, and Team Magma is bent on expanding the land to give more space to humans and land-dwelling Pokémon. They both will stop at nothing to achieve their goals, and the climax of the story is pretty insane. But, at the end of the day, it's just your run of the mill excuse to drive the gameplay.

Depth: 10

The depth of this gave is massive. The main game will take you 20-30 hours alone, and then there’s the post-game content. Oh boy, there is a HUGE amount of post-game content. One of the main goals of this game is to capture at least one specimen of each species of Pokémon in the region so you can help a Pokémon professor with his research.  With 202 Pokémon native to the region, you won’t find them all very quickly! In the post game you can also take on the Battle Frontier and try to beat each of the seven Frontier brains that reside there, but be warned – this is an extremely tough challenge for only the best of the best! And also, I've heard that the former champion, Steven Stone, is residing somewhere related to meteors… But he'll only appear to the very best!

Difficulty: 6

It’s definitely not a terribly difficult game (save for a certain post game area), but it can be challenging for those who are just learning how to play. If you know how the Pokémon games work, the main story should pose little challenge. Although, there are a few difficulty spikes in terms of mandatory bosses, so don't be surprised if you get your butt kicked by the second Gym Leader. Just make sure to be fully prepared before going into any boss battles, and always save beforehand.
Most of the insane challenges in this game are entirely optional, so they affect the rating very little. I'm more concerned with the main story.
Also, please save before trying to capture a legendary Pokémon, as they are the hardest things ever to catch, but again, they're optional. Go for it, by all means, but be warned.

Overall: 9.0

This game is fantastic, but not perfect. If you've never played a Pokémon game before, then you've been missing out. This is one of my favorite RPG series, and this installment shines brighter than the most well cut emerald. With a long story, excellent post-game, superb soundtrack, and great graphics, this is one of the best games on the Game Boy Advance. Play it now!

Divine Aurora : I just realized that the formatting was screwed up, so I fixed it. Should be easier to read now! And thank you! This was my first review, so I didn't know how it would turn out.
