Introduction: Pokémon Fire Red is an update to the previous installment in the Pokémon series on the Gameboy. This time, the game has great advancements, new additions, and of course, new Pokémon!! Mostly everything for this game is greatly updated and satisfies the needs of any hardcore Pokémon fan that didn't get what they wanted back when Red and Blue came out. Instead of, I don"t know, "Aqua Blue", instead we have Pokémon Leaf Green, it's sister game, if you will. Pokémon Green came out in Japan, while here in the United States, we all received, Pokémon Blue. Anyways, let's jump right into the review! Graphics: The graphics in this game are great. The Pokémon sprites are a huge improvement over the last generation. Well, at least I hope they would. The over-world in this game is very animated and each person has their own distinct outfit. Well, except for Team Rocket of course. Every time you enter a battle, say you were in the forest, it almost seems like you are actually sifting through the grass to encounter whatever Pokémon you have encountered. I really enjoyed looking at this game for hours on end. My only gripe with the graphics is that the battle backgrounds are a little dull. Like I said earlier, if you are in the grass, the background will be a dull green. To me, that is pretty lazy programming. At least have something that sticks out in the background. But, they have fixed that in the later generations. Also, they should have added some animations to the Pokémon as well. So, for those minor complaints, I gave the graphics a solid 8/10. Sound: Oh man. The sound in this game is great. Every town has a great little tune for you to listen to, every cave, building, everywhere! My favorite theme for this game has to be the final battle with your rival. That song really gets you pumped while you are smashing your thumbs on the buttons in excitement. They definitely didn't get lazy with the audio department. It has that perfect mix of new songs, and remixes of the old 8 bit Pokémon music that we all hold dear. As you progress through the game, the music will get more epic. You will never get tired of listening to one particular song. Some of the songs are so good that I have them on my iPod. So, for the great sound quality for this game, I rated the sound a perfect 10/10! Addictiveness: Let me tell you something. After you do all the annoying quests at the beginning of the game, you will be hooked on your Gameboy until you beat the game. That is how fun it is. You have around a 2 hour quest ahead of you, post game content that was added as an addition from original game, catching and collecting all the Pokémon, and leveling up all your Pokémon that you have caught to your liking. So, you have at least a 20 hour quest ahead, and it is very addicting. This game has so much to offer as far as gameplay goes. The first time I played this, I had a blast playing it, and it is still very fun to this day. So, for all these key points, I have rated the addictiveness of this game a solid 10/10! Story: Like any other Pokémon game, you start out as a 10 year old boy striving to become the champion of the Kanto league. You have a rival as well. You will encounter him every so often and he will continue to get stronger. You get a Pokémon, a creature that battles and gains experience as well as grows with you as your companion, from your local friend, Professor Oak! After you have received your choice of Pokémon, you set out on your journey to become a Pokémon master. That is pretty much the gist of it. Along the way, you will battle trainers that want to battle you, obviously, using your Pokémon. After so many levels, your Pokémon evolves into it's next form. Although, some Pokémon do not have another form. These Pokémon are called legendary Pokémon. You can catch them after you have learned certain TM's to help you along your way to catching them. You will encounter Pokémon gyms. These gyms will test your skills in Pokémon battles. If you succeed to defeat the gym leader, you obtain that badge that the gym leader has. After you have collected all of these badges, you can put your skills up to the test at the Elite 4. If succeed in beating all of the trainers as well as your rival, you become the Pokémon master! I have always liked this story, and it never gets old. For the always excellent Pokémon story, I give it a 10/10! Depth: There is a lot of things to do in this game. I believe I have mentioned them before, but if you have already forgotten them due to boredom, I will restate them now. This is a big improvement over the original game. So, for adding more content to the game as well as new Pokémon, I have given the depth for this game a perfect 10/10! Difficulty: This game isn't that hard if you train your Pokémon correctly. Granted, your rival is sometimes very hard to beat later in the game, but other than that, it isn't hard. The only hard part I have encountered is Victory Road where you have to navigate through the maze where it leads you to the Elite 4. I have had to use some sort of gaming advice from Youtube and whatnot. But besides that, there really isn't any reason for you to stop playing it because it is too hard. I think Pokémon games should be a little harder because it makes the games more fun. Granted, there is a large younger audience that enjoys playing Pokémon, but I think that it would really be a good addition to make the game a little harder. So, for the lacking difficulty of this game, I will rate it an average 5/10. Overall: I will make this part short and sweet. I never get tired of this game at all. When I am bored, I will pop this bad boy into my Gameboy any day. This game is just simply amazing. I think it has to be my favorite Pokémon game. So, I have to rate this game a perfect 10/10!
