Final Fantasy 7 starts with the bombing of an energy reactor from a terrorist group named Avalanche (they bombed another later). In response to that, the "evil corporate empire" bombs back and destroys slums.

In Final Fantasy 8, Seeds are hired as mercenaries to fight. The main characters go on a fight to liberate a city, and later on try to abduct that country's president.

With all the political correctness surrounding the 9/11 attacks (and the small "controversy" that surrounded The Two Towers), do you think these video games (and other similar, if you can think of any) could have been released after 2011?

As for games being released after it yea just look at COD and BF3, which in some of the videos I've seen show warfare in corporate like environments. I don't know though, the most recent game I have is probably from 2004

But the reality is you have to ask your instructors this question.
Particularly your instructors that are enthusiastic about history.
War on any scale is not something to be taken as lightly as a "Mind your manners" move by the video game industry.

A "juicy plot" is a juicy plot.
