you could say that they were both on a plane so they could go skydiving, but something malfunctions in the plane, and as they lose altitude they're about to just make a jump for it when out of nowhere the plane hits something and they're thrown farther into the plane. so as the plane is hitting other debris they're struggling to throw themselved out of the plane. when they finally can jump out, they're not too high above the ground, but high enough to make them pass out when they hit the lake below them. as they fall, unable to reach the parachute strings, they look over their should to see the plane burst into a fiery explosion farther away. and that's when they'd hit the water.
