Well I don't know how to play guitar but I do kinda know how to play bass guitar, the way I learned to play is from Youtube. You can find a lot of free lessons on Youtube and you should try playing Punk Rock songs like the Ramones songs because they are very simple and awesome. I hope this helps if not sorry.

Totts : If you haven't yet, take piano first. It makes every other instrument so much easier. You can kinda get a feel for how songs are supposed to go, get rhythms down, get good with tonation, ect. You can play a lot of jazz/blues songs on pianos too.

If that's not gonna happen, then I wouldn't know what to tell ya.

BluemageKyle : might tho...

I do not know how to play. My brother tried to teach me but I am left handed and he is right. So we would need 2 separate guitars. Sorry

mrfe: Thank you for the summon. I might have never found this.
Now first, you have to be able to strum all the strings. First looking (NOTE: No frets are being held down, it is just playing open-notes.), and the second time not looking. Now if you play the guitar with your left hand (You strum with your left and hold frets with your right, and for right-handed you play with your left hand holding frets and your right hand strumming.)you will have the highest string(High-G/E I believe, depends on your turning. And a good tuning for Jazz would be drop-D.) on top, closest to you. And the lowest string will be closest to the ground. Now for another exercise, try holding the first fret on the string closest to you, either the highest or lowest string. Place your index finger or middle finger somewhat close to the fret "line" and hold down. I will advise you, you will most definitely get calluses. Next, while holding the fret, strum the string you are using your either left/right hand to hold down the fret. It'll take a couple of tries, sure, but keep doing that and also do that with all the other strings. If you'd like I can teach you chords.

"Hotel California". Can teach you a ton of chords. (Not really blues. I know.)
Look up videos of Plucking Methods like"Hammer on" and "Pull away", "Bend", and "Slide".
There are various books on the subject.

Magazines I used to enjoy Monthly are "Total Guitar" and "Guitar World".
They cover all kinds of basics and advanced tricks of the trade.

I loved the Maintenance and Restoration tricks of "Eds Shack."

But for Beginners I have to recommend getting a friend to play with or check out all of the tabs with videos on easy Blues Riffs and such.
Also a good audio Tuner is a must. They average out to $20.00 Bucks a pop. (Unless you can spot the differences in all of the notes allready. A.K.A. "Perfect Pitch".)

A good extra Set of Strings is a must too. (For Beginners I recommend "Enieball Super Slinkys".)

Ummm.
That's about all the time I have for now. Ask Questions and I'll be glad to answer.
Looks like Kyle and a couple of others are answering this thread too so I am sure that you should find enough info fairly soon.

Good Luck To All.
I'm done. Stick a fork in me.
Peace.
