Good day folks, I was hoping I could get some advice from more "tech-savy" people on the Vizzed forums.

So a couple of months ago I found out that Total War 2: Rome as announced for the PC that I plan upon getting barring any issues that I see with the game (which hasn't happened yet.) My problem is that the computer I'm currently using has a terrible graphics card, RAM, etc. Not to mention my CD drive doesn't work, so if I were to get the game I will be unable to install it on my current computer.

So I was thinking more and more about making my own computer as some of the pre-designed computers don't appeal to me. However I don't know a thing about building my own computer plus I'm not very well versed in computer software and hardware. Not to mention I'm not a serious computer gamer so if I were to build my own computer I wouldn't be spending a lot of money on Motherboard, Graphics Card, RAM, etc. Key issue for me...

I'm hoping that if I were to build my own computer that I would spend only $600-$800 dollars as I would have to buy a monitor and have someone build the computer for me. So I will end up paying somewhere between $1000 dollars, which I don't really want to pay. I already talked to a friend who is tech savy and he told me that an Intel i5 processor would be a good processor if I don't want to spend a ton of money. So I guess to ask my questions...

1. Should I build my own computer or just buy a pre-built computer given my above info?

2. Which is better an AMD based processor 9like any of the X or Geforce) or an Intel processor (like an i3 or i5)? Also which would be better for me?

3. Can anyone requimend certain motherboard, Graphic card, RAM, processor if its not too much of a problem?

There are many options available to you, having a budget of $1000 can get you a very solid gaming machine. Before looking into this, is the monitor and software (OS) considered part of this $1000 or is that just for the case and it's components?

A please I find VERY useful is www.tomshardware.com, there is a LOT of information about computer hardware and can help you make some informed decisions. But if you like I could compile a list of components I would buy if I had the option to build my own system right now.

Building your own computer is always the better option. A $400 computer you build yourself will be leaps and bounds better than even a $700 computer bought at Best Buy. Putting it together is really easy, too. If a part fits in a place (easily!) then that's where it goes. The hardest part is putting the CPU and heatsink together, but even that is just making sure you get the right amount of thermal paste on the CPU. There are actually kits out there that will help you with that--for about $4 you get a tube of paste, a plastic cutout the exact shape of your CPU, and a spreader to make an even coat. Couldn't be easier.

And with that issue solved, now the only hard part is actually parting it out--that is, choosing what to buy. To make things easier, I just go over to cyberpowerpc and part out a decent rig, then go to Newegg and buy the parts at a huge discount and put it together myself.

By far building your own computer is the way to go. (except for people with ridiculously low budgets, like $200 - $300.)
For $800 you could get quite a nice computer, for just over $100 you can get a fairly good 23" 1080p monitor. As I'm fairly new to this forum I can't post links or HTML, so I'll just give you a list of parts and tell you on what website you can get them for cheapest.

CPU - Intel Core i5 3330 - $173, Super Biiz
Heatsink - Stock, will do fine unless you overclock, which isn't really neccesary unless you do things such as video editing.
RAM -  SuperTalent DDR3- 1333 8GB (2x4GB) - $76, Super Biiz
Hard Drive - Western Digital 1TB RE3 - $60, Amazon
Graphics Card - Sapphire Radeon Dual-X R9 270X 2GB, $200, Central Computers
Case -  NZXT Source 220, $47, Amazon
Power Supply - Seasonic SS-500ES 500W , $55, Super Biiz
OS - Windows 8 or Windows 7, whichever you prefer, $80, pretty much any tech store.

This costs ~$700 when put together, which gives you some room for a nice monitor. (assuming you're paying around $80 - $100 to get it built, if more / less just tell us.)
For a monitor I'd recommend the Dell U2312HM (Available at Amazon for $220) which is a great IPS monitor (I'll give an explanation of what this means in a moment) with a 1920 x 1200 resolution.

As for what IPS means, they are displays that have much better color reproduction and better viewing angles. I personally prefer these displays over TN, which have worse color reproduction and worse viewing angles, but have a 1 - 2ms response time compared to the ~5ms response time of IPS panels. I really don't think the ~3ms makes a big difference at all, but it's your choice.

Hope this helped!

First you would actually need to have knowledge about building a computer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zOYdNEHDQo you can eve ask him to build you one if he's not busy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kaPMzqAUrU

Building your own computer and being able to choose each part individually is always the better, and cheaper option to go. Thing is, if you aren't "Tech savvy" like you mentioned in your original post, than this job is going to probably be a lot harder than you anticipated.

Being able to troubleshoot hardware issues is HUGE when building your own computer.

That is what I figured.

Now I'm afraid a lot has changed since I first wrote my original post. The person who offered to build my computer before me we no longer see each other given that I quit the job that both of us work at.

So now is there a place that can build my computer for me if I have the parts?

Thunderous : I actually wouldn't need a 1TB hard drive, a 500 GB would be more then enough. Also it would be Windows 7. But thanks for the info specs.

I don't have any tech info to give you, but listen to what I do know: my dad built a computer for the family (I don't use the term 'family computer' because there is a separate Famicom elsewhere in our house) and he had this genius idea. He put some blue L-wire or something in the box housing the computer and wired the main power thing to it so that when the computer is on, the lights are. It's way cool, consider adding something like that.
