Side note: I'm really sorry if I offend anyone who likes the game with this review. I'm sure it has a fan base, I just don't like the games company. I will keep this review professional, no flaming involved, but I will be very critical.
Well then...sonic the hedgehog. The creatively named video game that put millions of sonic fans on suicide watch. Many people were very excited about this game, and I cant blame them. Its sonic coming out on a next Gen console, using the 360 to its max...which it didn't do by the way. Though, when I first saw it, I didn't think much. And then the public roared in pain after playing through most of the game, and I got curious. That curiosity took away a week of my life that I could have spent beating majora's mask again. This game was released in 2006 on the XBOX360, PS3, and PC. I am reviewing the PS3 version, but I have looked around and there are no discernible differences between all of the games. So, this is Ender44, here to rip this game apart.
Gameplay: Easily the worst thing about this entire game. Lets break it down, I will talk about each characters gameplay, and then I can tell you what was done wrong with it.
Sonic- Our little blue blur, a little blurrier than before. He has some of the most awkward gameplay in the game, and it helped ruin this game for me. The controls are incredibly awkward. Sonic the hedgehog tries to emulate how sonic controlled in the adventure games, and it would have gotten away with it, if there was some better programming. Sonic can do all those things from the adventure games like running at high speeds, homing attacks, and getting power-ups, it just doesn't work the way you would think. It is more awkward to control sonic than in other sonic game to date. Then, SEGA had a revelation. They had an idea to take the awkward running skills and make it so you cant turn them off....yeah. There are parts in this game where you literally cannot slow sonic down. He just keeps running and you have to steer him. This is so annoying and it was incredibly hard to get past. There are also parts where sonic will have to carry Elise. The core gameplay of sonic is running at high speeds! Why did they want to slow him down and carry this girl?! She can create a barrier around herself to make it so you can walk across sand and water, though it really doesn't make sense that sonic for some reason just cant walk through sand. I'm sure he does it in sonic and the secret rings, but no, not anymore.
Silver: The gameplay is better, just more boring. Though, boring is troublesome to say, because if you cant get over the incredibly awkward controls, then sonic is boring solely because you will keep dying. But I say boring to mean if you were getting over the awkward controls and weren't dying all the time. Silver's levels revolve around his telekinesis, using it to move blocks. And you know what, when I heard about this, I got very excited. Adding puzzle solving to sonic sounded so awesome...but it wasn't. Silver's gameplay isn't horrible, but mixed with all of the pre existing problems in the game, it becomes pretty horrible. Silver has one attack, and it is pretty awkward to use.
Shadow: ....why. I love shadow and everything about him to my dying breath. His gameplay is probably the best, though it is still pretty bad. His gameplay is much like sonic's, though it doesn't have the speed sections. It mainly revolves around combat, and I did enjoy myself with it. His ability to drive is back from the first game, though the awkward controls murdered it and made it thoroughly not enjoyable.
Supporting characters in general: Each main character has supporting characters, which are a lot less fun than the main characters, if you can call that fun. They all control horribly. And tails in suddenly slowed incredibly. He used to be pretty much just as fast as sonic, and now he probably couldn't beat a small mouse in a foot race.
Graphics: This part is easily the best part of the game. This game is actually very pretty. Some of the cutscenes between Elise and sonic were absolutely gorgeous, and I do like the environments. The characters animate well for the most part, but at random times they will just disappear and then reappear...what? And in some of the cutscenes, sonic looks horribly photoshopped into the scene, and I cant get over it. The environments were forgettable to say the least. Dr. Eggman also sports a re-design which I am a huge fan of, it makes him look much more like an evil scientist.
Sound: I am not a fan. I'm sure that some have different tastes in music than I do though. I really wasn't a fan. It caught my attention in a bad way and caused me to turn the volume off.
Addictiveness: Sonic games are more addicting for me than any other series to date. I have beaten quite a few of them over 5 times. Not this one though. The bad qualities of this game made me never want to play it again, and you know what, I never will. I gave this game a two simply because I might want to replay one or two levels in the game, as they were sort of enjoyable.
Story: I kind of sort of like the story. I only really like one aspect of it, and I almost despise the rest. The part I will cover first is something I'm sure you have seen a youtube video or meme poster about, the awkward love moments between Sonic and Elise. Sonic is an animal, and there are all of these really awkward moments between this animal and this human that made me so uncomfortable.
Dr. Eggman crashes the festival of the sun searching for the flames of disaster. He kidnaps princess Elise in the process. And here comes the part where I get confused. The rest of the story is just back in time, forward in time, reuniting, getting lost. After a bit of incoherence, we find the rest of the story.
Mephiles the dark (the bad shadow recolor) kills sonic. This causes Elise to cry, releasing ibilis, who was sealed in her tears. Mephiles forms with ibillis to make Solaris. It is revealed that the chaos emeralds may revive sonic. Sonic is revived with them, he turns himself, silver, and shadow to their super forms, and solaris is defeated. This story is...bad. It carries out the time travel parts badly and the whole thing is very confusing.
Depth: There are three story lines, and each one has a decent amount of levels to them. There is also a hub world where you can carry out various side quests. Though, this takes much longer due to the loading times of this game. I know it sounds weird to put it in depth. But this is a huge flaw in the game and I want sure where to put it. This game has an excessive amount of loading time. For one sidequest, you may be stuck with three or four very long loading screens, it is very annoying to deal with.
Difficulty: This game is difficult just because of the horrible gameplay. The camera angles are annoying, the controls are awkward, and the hit-detection is sub par. You will die plenty of times playing this game.
Overall, I would skip it. It gave me a lot of trouble, was barely any fun, and the story didn't keep me hooked in the slightest way. Again, I tried very hard to keep this professional, and I hope I don't offend any fans. And to the people who may post here, please don't insult the game or flame people who like it.
See ya.
