So I've been somewhat interested in the state of Nevada policy of legalized Prostitution ever since the state of Rhode Island criminalized Prostitution a couple of years ago. What I found interesting is that women's rights groups supported a woman's right to become a Prostitute. They stressed that if a woman wishes to sell her body for sex LEGALLY then she should have the right to do so; similar to the arguement with regards to abortion.

But unlike the abortion arguement which while most people tend to agree with that arguement (unless your devotely pro-life and that abortion shouldn't be legal even in cases of rape, incest, etc.); I'm willing to believe that this arguement is even weaker in the case of legalized Prostitution. So to get into the question...

1. Does the arguement that a woman should have the right to use her body for prostitution a strong argument?

2. What better arguments could you guys think of infavor or against legalized Prostitution?

It is something that has to be controlled. I do not thing that it should be legal to just privately sell yourself like that on your own. I think Nevada has it right. It is an actual job. There are facilities to REGULATE it. The people who decide to go to these places are properly checked for transmittable diseases. There is no worry about these women getting beaten or killed when there is no way to get away with it. It is taxable. It becomes an actual thing that feeds into the economy. If it were REGULATED, you would have a huge decrease in disease spreading, violent crime against these women, women wouldn't have to practically become slaves to pimps, and unwanted prostitution pregnancies would decrease. How is any of this bad? People against it would argue how it is wrong and morally disgusting. Well, nobody said regulating it means you have to go to the place. If you don't go, it literally has no effect on you. Other arguments would be that it just encourages or promotes prostitution. Here is the thing. You can choose between two worlds. Both are going to have prostitution no matter what. One world will have it regulated, controlled, safer, and feeding into the economy. The other world will have it violent, risky, and even life threatening. When you have to choose prostitution being one of those, the first is the clear better option.

NO women are already immune to so much they need some sort of crime, we don't need women to have 100% more rights than men. We need equality.

Question 1: For me, I think it's an issue of morality and the kind of society we want to be. Sure, there are detractors who will break the law and do what they will, but as a society, if we allow vices such as prostitution to be legal, I think it shows that we are not in control of our own persons and thus, makes us weaker. As a result, I personally am against the legalization of prostitution. To me, this extends to women being paid for pornography videos outside of the realm of revenue generated by the video. It is hypocritical to me that people on Craigslist can advertise for paid adult services if it's on video tape, and that's okay. In all honesty, if the girl on the video is not making a cut of the revenue generated by the video, then it should be illegal. A "here's $200 for a video" is the same thing as prostitution, and if prostitution is illegal in your state, so too should be the scenario I presented.

Question 2: Strengthening the argument against it, I would argue with the stance that a women's rights group is encouraging women to shuck aside becoming educated and working towards a respectable career in favor of an easier route for money. All of the sudden, money has become the primary goal, and we've forgotten about the fact that finding a profession or a niche is also about contributing in a positive manner. As a result, these people who are pushing for prostitution are, in turn, pushing against women rising in the ranks of society because they are hampering the incentive for women to better their standing in society.

I'm a bit biased, so I have a hard time finding a way to strengthen the argument. I think you could argue from a socioeconomic position, stating that women with a low socioeconomic standing can better themselves through prostitution. However, because of the risk of diseases and the obvious risk of pregnancy, this could really be more of a boon to lower-income people since there already is a higher rate of both of these things in that class category.

In any rate, it's an interesting question, and one that provoked a lot of thought. I am going to say, I do not think that it should be legalized nationwide through the federal government. This is important to note because it is not covered in the Constitution (currently, that is. An amendment or a Supreme Court case could change that), the power is delegated to the states to decide. Therefore I can say I disagree with Nevada's decision to legalize prostitution, I cannot say that they are wrong because it ultimately isn't for me to decide.

Pimping should be illegal but prostitution not.

If you want to sell your body it is your choice whether you are male or female, but you should be able to keep the profits and it should be your choice if you do so or not. The sex trade which is the modern day slavery you see for example in modern day Europe where people from former eastern block countries are conned to come to the west for "waitressing"or "baby sitting", "vegetable picking" or "hosting" should be smashed to bits.

1.Your body, your choice.

2. I personally don't care much either way, except for the personal freedom of people doing what they see is fit for them, without the aspect of exploitation of course. If you seek an alternative view for prostitution in a smart way, read "paying for it" by Chester Brown. I did not identify or agree with many of the things there but it opened up my eyes in many things both good and bad.

I was going to categorically listcall the reasons it should be regulated but rcarter beat me to it so il just say I agree with what was said.
penzycubone :
yeh, women get away with everything. personally I think we should make more things illegal because, lets face it, women have it too easy. perhaps they should be beaten for waving without written consent from all men in the area. we can knock this crazy idea their body is their own, from their rebelious heads.
pray75 :
I dont think legalisation would draw women away from trying to get a good job. iv never heard a woman state their desired career as prostitute.
there will always be a negative stigma to it and few people will want to do it. but the ones that do it, if regulation can improve their lot its a plus

Prostitution is porn without a camera.

More generally, prostitution is just another kind of transaction. There is a supply and a demand; if everything is consensual, then it's none of the state's business. A sociology professor even said that prostitution can be beneficial if, for example, a man has a twisted fantasy his wife doesn't want to fulfill or doesn't dare to ask.

thenumberone : The point I'm trying to make is that there would be incentive for women not to work as hard to get a good job because the money would be so easily available with legalized prostitution. I've known many a woman (and a few men, but not as many) get stuck as a waitress or a bartender because they make enough money to foot their bills and fund their habits. These girls, extremely intelligent and capable of having true success, would rather show some cleavage and make $40,000 a year than work hard, go to school, and make $85,000 or more. In most of these cases, these girls are not chasing their dreams or doing what they wanted to, but they've become so separated from that and so into drugs and alcohol that the quick money (cash on hand) is more of an incentive than the opportunities in the future. And especially with the way society is going already, where we want what we want and we want it now, legalized prostitution would definitely have an impact of the success of many women. Don't forget to mention the self-esteem and health issues that would present themselves.

And here's another thing to consider. States require you to be honest when putting in applications to jobs. Imagine you're a woman, you've decided to get a job with Wells Fargo, but you have on your work history that you were a prostitute. Legalized prostitution would require this to happen, and let me tell you, companies are not going to like hiring those types of people. It would be even worse if she was a prostitute trying to work in the education field. And if you lied about your work history, neglecting to mention that you were a prostitute, it wouldn't be hard for your employer to find that out.

Okay. So you, as a woman, decide to stay a prostitute for a while. How are you going to have a relationship with another man? I mean, it's possible that some guys would be okay with it, but I can't imagine being a prostitute would be healthy for your relationship. And it would harm your children as well. Have you ever been around boys when they see a friend's attractive mother? They have a field day teasing this kid, and although most of the time it's in good fun, think about if they found out that woman was a prostitute. That boy's teasing just became full-on bullying, complete with the most vile mother insults you can imagine. And don't forget about your daughter. She will have a target on her back at school, everyone thinking she's dirty even if she's chaste. But the worst part is that because you, as a parent, have said, "This is okay" because of the way you live your life, your daughter will likely do the same thing. I can't imagine anyone wanting to see their daughter grow up as a prostitute.

So let's imagine that a lot of the kids at school have prostitutes for parents, cutting down on the bullying some. Something is wrong with that picture. If there are a lot of kids with prostitute parents, you have an absolutely jacked up society there. Self-worth and purpose is at an all-time low, and I can imagine that whatever school they're in is one of the worst schools in the district.

Here's the best part about the entire thing. You've remained a prostitute, you're getting older, and your sales begin to drop. Now your gig is up, because unless you can keep yourself in tip-top shape, very few people are going to elicit the services of an aging prostitute, at least not without you taking a massive pay cut. Your $200 a session just became much, much less. How are you going to survive? Assuming you have children, how are you going to take care of them? If your husband is able to provide, then why are you a prostitute in the first place? Get where I'm going with this?

The ramifications of legalizing prostitution extends out to far more than "it's going to pump money into the economy" or "It's a woman's right to do with her body what she will." It seems that fewer and fewer people are stopping to think about what kind of an impact our choices now are going to make for future generations to come, and I guess that's a result of the "It's my money and I need it now" society we reside in.

I hope you nobody takes offense to anything that I've posted, but I think it's important that we see that there is more than meets the eye when it comes to major changes in the laws of a society. Don't let anything cross your face without examining it, examining it again, and weighing the pros and cons of such things.

pray75 :
I understand what youre driving at but almost everyone wants to make something of their self, I just cant imagine people will deliberately choose prostitution instead of a career.
dobt know much about state laws but I am pretty sure that being honest means not lying, where asked if ypu have criminal convictions, disabilitys etc you are expected to disclose this. you dont need to say everyjob you have had, people generaly do to further their prospects.
am aware being a prostitute isnt glamorous, but these effects to them occurr now. if they can be reduced by legallegaleans then its a worthwhile venture.
I dont take offence to what youre saying, I even feel you may object for better reasons than you simply feel your religion is against it, but I do think you are wrong in believing legalisation could not make womens lifes better. thats my only real drive for wanting it legalised.

I honestly don't think that a person should have the right to choose whether or not they could be a prostitute, because it isn't just a personal choice. Their right to choose can stem to others, and affect their right to choose; being infected with an STD, for example. Although it is the men/women's choice to hire a prostitute, they could contract something involuntarily or be lied to, which negates their rights to cleanliness and overall safety. Hence why things like murder and drug pushing are also illegal- you have a right to do what you want with your own body, so long as the effects of such don't hinder the rights of others. I agree that a woman can choose to either have a child or an abortion, but I see that quickly becoming something that won't be a choice.  If you have a child, you are contributing to the use of resources and the population density, which can inadvertently affect the rights of others to have said resources. Abortion is a poor form of population control, but it doesn't seem like there are a lot of other options,  unless you include war and disease as contributing factors. Anyway, I'm getting off-topic, but my main point being, is that a person should only have rights that don't infringe upon the rights of others. Of course, you can't stop someone from committing an act against another without previous warning, but you can make the said act punishable, so that in turn, the rights of those who commit crimes against humanity are forfeit.
Prostitution harms noone when all parties are consenting adults, but when prostitutes are abused and cannot go to the police because they fear being arrested, something is very wrong. And yes, there are male prostitutes too. Legalization and regulation is the only option that makes sense both morally and legally.

Would you care to expound upon your assertion that "prostitution the only option that makes sense both morally and legally"? It does not make for a good discussion when you state a claim as an absolute and offer little reason behind why you believe the way you do.

Oldschool41 :

I think it should be legal, not for moral reasons, but to regulate for safety. I think all sexual activity out of marriage is immoral and all should abstain to the best of their ability. I don't want it legal because it is moral and fine to do. I want it legal because I see benefits to those that would choose to be immoral regardless.

1. If women want to barter their bodies for money, that's fine.  It should be decriminalized at least and they should be allowed to do what they wish to generate income.

2.  The argument is against the spread of STDs, violence, rape, and stresses on public services.  With more sex there are more STDs.  Women will be raped and the issue becomes "Oh, she said she was a prostitute," and that leads to a tremendous amount of gray area as the law is concerned.  Violence will go up and problems occur.  On the flip side, if a well-regulated and taxed industry shows up and women are safer for it, that's helpful.  But suddenly more resources go into yet another government program and we have to deal with it.

If a law like this was past it could easilly be exploited through lies and fear of voilence leaving women vunerable, if a woman really did want to do this the only safegaurd would be for it only to be legal in state monitored buildings however this would lead to corruption so there is no way to given the right without putting people at risk.

pray75 : It's fairly simple.

Prostitution does not intrinsically harm anyone, and what consenting adults do with each other is their own business, not the state's. Banning abortion has no legal grounds.

At the same time, prostitutes are abused, and need to know that they are safe in seeking police protection when that happens. Furthermore, as people have pointed out, legalising prostitution allows the government to regulate it, ensuring safer and healthier conditions for both prostitutes and their clients. Legalising and regulating prostitution is a morally superior choice.
