Actually science is starting to point towards atheism being wrong. A good place to start would be this lovely movie, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxopF5_bUA0&list=PLCCFD043B19423B46 . You must watch the whole thing now. That's just the start, Then you must take both college level Comparative Religion and Biology classes. Then really think about it.

Craves4Raves :
You cant disprove atheism, the only common fact is they dont believe in god. As with religion, there will never be definitive proof that god is real (unless he actually appeared).

I am an Atheist.  I grew up as a christian, but at around the age of 11 I began to learn more about science.  I found that science had better, more reasonable explanations for the things my religion tried to explain.  Eventually, I decided for myself that there was no god.  I'm lucky  my family members are tolerant of religious differences.  I know some families try to shove religion in everyone's face.

I am an Atheist. I did at one point believe in God, and I read the Bible and went to church, but after a while, I began to think that the Bible didn't make much sense at some points. I also got confused about how some parts of the Bible mentioned God's never ending mercy, and other parts mentioned his anger and wrath. I got scared any disobedience against God would mean I would die or suffer somehow.

But I thought about it, and realized that the existence of God is really hard to support, and evolution seems to be more plausible. But the main reason I lost my faith in God is because I felt like a puppet when I was a Christian, just proclaiming God's love when it was quite hard to justify at times. So, instead of God being the boss of me, I'm the boss of me.

I am also an Atheist. I never liked Catholicism at all. I was baptized and had my first communion, but then I stopped going to church because it was boring and illogical. As I became more interested in science, I realized that science had an explanation for everything that happens in the universe (almost), and it makes complete sense. I learned about evolution, and I made my decision. I am happy with what I believe in, and the fact that I'm an Atheist probably won't ever change.

I find it interesting how things have changed.

It seems not that long ago that if you were openly atheist, you were going to face opposition, ridicule, rejection. But the table have turned so much. The religious ones are now mocked as being dumb and unscientific. It's like the scientific world is "getting back" at religion for the centuries of geniuses being persecuted for trying to advance our understanding of the universe.

But it's funny that many atheist "scientist" feel that anyone who believes in a god or creator is immediately unable to think scientifically and is stupid. It's as if when it comes to creation, many feel there NO room for it in the science world... which is really a shame.

I'm an agnostic atheist mainly because the concept of god doesn't make much sense to me.
In my school I'm basically like the only person who doesn't believe in a god.
So yeah it has happened that people discriminate on me but its not overly common.
I very very rarely actually meet anyone who is an atheist around here.

I am an Atheist, and yes, I get a lot of hate for it. Mainly because I'm not a closet Atheist, everyone knows it and so everyone who disagrees decides I'm a target. I've been called everything from a devil to a Satanist because people just don't seem to understand what Atheism actually is.

As far as theistic people go, I have no problems with them given they have no problems with me. I love to debate religion actually, and will do so until I cannot talk anymore. But the second you judge me for what I may or may not believe in, you have a problem.

As for why? ~Shrug~ I just don't see the logic in some all-powerful being floating in the sky with billions upon billions of dead people looking down on us and being sad that we aren't perfect or don't worship him/her/it. If it were really that big a deal that I believe without a shadow of a doubt, it would have made itself known to me years ago.

That said, one of many reasons I don't believe is well explained by this video (Don't watch if you're easily freaked/grossed out): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCh3JdMMwY0 I just can't see some all-loving being putting things that can make its creatures suffer like that on the planet.

Also, there's people like this: http://church-of-illumination.com

And that, my dear friends, is the end of my jabbering.

I used to be a pretty hardline Christian, frequenting mass and basing my beliefs around the Bible (or at least what I thought it was). But reading many debates over religion from a variety of people (including many on this very site!), I started to realize just how illogical the whole thing is. There's no more proof for God than there is for Thor, or for that matter the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Why dedicate my life to the dogma of one supposed deity over thousands of others?

I realized there was no god a couple of months ago. I still pray. I just pray to nature, for it has provided everything ever with everything it's ever needed. I honestly can't wait to die. Just so I won't have to worry about anything.

I am a Christian, but I respect what other people believe in, whether you are an atheist or are Muslim. Hey, I might disagree, but I still respect everyone's decisions.

If you are an atheist, what really sparked you to become one? What really made you think there is no god?

And btw, I do not think Christianity is a religion; it really isn't. It's a way of life, to live for the one who saved me from my sins.

I don't follow God or Jesus (apart from on twitter ). I don't actually go by the beliefs of any religion so like some posters in this thread I am infact atheist. I will not claim that god does not exist though. If he did not exist no one would know what God is so scientists can not say God does not exist because they know what God is. So to some this up I think God is just a concept rather than a physical person, as do I feel the same way towards the other religions.

Sidewinder : But why would you live for someone who died 2000 years ago. While I do like some of Jesus' messages, he didn't perform miracles and you know he didn't. It's just not possible. What sins did he save you from? Live for yourself. Live to further human kind and bring people together. Don't live for someone that died 2000 years ago. I mean we only got about another 1.3 billion years before only prokaryotes are left on earth. We better get to mastering interstellar travel. Am I right?

djent : "He didn't perform miracles and you know he didn't..."

As a matter of fact, I do believe he performed miracles, it states so in the Bible. It is not up to another person to tell me what I do and do not believe. It is your opinion however, and I respect it.

As for sins, Jesus saved all of us from sins - lying, murdering, stealing, etc. I would rather live for the one who saved me than live for myself.

Yes, Jesus died 2000 years ago, but he is alive now and forever. He was raised from the dead and conquered hell.

As for mastering interstellar travel, we are not close to any breakthroughs on that and will never be close. Another 1.3 billion years is long, and surely you and I will die before then. However, I know that God is coming on a day that no one knows the time nor the hour. He will snatch his children like a thief and rescue us from the Tribulations yet to come. So...as for interstellar travel, nah, I am good

Sidewinder : I didn't say you didn't believe he did miracles. I said you know he didn't. Deep in the back of your rational mind, you know that no human can just make someone not be blind. And he didn't just turn water into wine. That requires yeast and sugar. And like a few weeks of time. I mean Christianity says gays go to hell. And people that work on the Sabbath. Sounds a little unfair to me. And why isn't the one true God a god from an ancient religion that came way before Christianity. Doesn't make sense does it.

djent : My friend, my friend, please tell me where you got the idea that Christians say gays go to hell. Christianity does not state WHATSOEVER that gays go to hell. Please do give me SOLID EVIDENCE. People who say they are Christians and state that gays go to hell are hypocrites.
In the back of my mind, yes, I was skeptical. But that all changed when I got deeper in my relationship with Christ.

And why isn't the one true God from an ancient religion? That makes absolutely no sense and does not matter at all. It does make sense man.

I KNOW he did miracles, don't tell me that I know that he didn't.

I choose to believe what I do - I feel you don't understand half of what you are trying to prove wrong

The Sabbath is part of the old covenant God had with the people of Israel. When Jesus came to Earth, he made a new covenant. The old covenant, or the 10 Commandments, is the past. Sure, there are people who still follow it, and we all do in small parts. Do not steal or murder.
So what if people work on the Sabbath? The old covenant is not the covenant Jesus made with us. If you see in the Bible the Pharisees and Sadducees getting angry at him for healing people on the Sabbath, Jesus did not care.

I just want to tell everyone that you need to make sure that you are keeping this as a debate. No need to get personal or cut people down because of their beliefs or lack there of. If things start getting out of hand I will close this thread down.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
