Anyone know of a good exturnal hard drives that hold 1TB of data? Need to backup data but before I blow tons of cash on it I want to be sure I can trust it not dying a few months after, as many of them I've seen from reviews tend to die fast.

Clicky I would stick with Western Digital, I've had my 500 gig external for like 2 years and its been just fine, always responsive and quick.

The price of TB external's are just amazing lately. I plan on upgrading soon but yeah as far as I'm concerned Western Digital is great, I cannot speak for the others but the site has reviews area so yeah. Let me know what you decide though.

that's what I was going to suggest as well. Western Digital has been good quality for a while now. I've gotten some drives from them several years ago that still work now. I basically use them for storage so they don't get touched a lot but they still work

I agree, I've had a "My Book" by them for a year and it's been nice. Plus you can get a 1 TB for really cheap, $120 on amazon.

I've been considering getting a 1 TB for a while, I have a 500 GB right now and it's almost filled.

EDIT: What do you need all this extra space for by the way?

that's what I was thinking... how in the world are you going to fill 4 TB???

That's a lot of crap to have just floatin around on a hard drive....

I am impressed at the 4 TB external drive though.... that's awesome.

Looks like a 4 TB is around $500, I would really suggest not blowing all your money on something like that unless you really need it but I really doubt you'd be able to fill 4 TB's anytime soon.

Well everyone has really said the same thing.
I would also go with the WD drive, but I wouldn't get a 4TB yet, I would wait till they get it perfected, just in case.
Plus at the price 4 1TB's are cheaper by a portion anyway.

I need the space for my files, I have nothing backed up yet... But yea 4TB's is too much 1TB is plenty and also don't want to spend much on it either. Something around $100 is good.

Western Digital is indeed a good brand... but be careful with the USB-powered ones if you have a Mac. I have one, and had a hard time getting it working because the USB ports on Mac laptops don't provide enough power to run the drive. (Luckily my laptop has 2 USB ports, so I was able to get it working by getting a USB splitter cable and plugging it in to both at once. Not exactly an ideal solution, though. )

Not sure if this issue occurs on all Western Digital drives, or if it affects other computer models. But it's something to keep in mind anyway.

Edit: Whoops sorry, this is pretty old ; Oh well, may as well leave the comment in case anyone else happens to be interested in external hard drives...
