If this topic is in the wrong place, then I give permission to move the thread to the correct forum.

Okay folks so I was at work today and I discovered that someone had left Christmas dishes and some gardening pots inside of a bag. I brought the bag into the store to tell my manager that this was left outside. So my manager tells me to see if the Salvation Army drop boxes next to my work place take these plates and pots. Turns out they don't.

So I brought the dishes and pots back into my store. One of my coworkers noticed the bag that the pots and dishes were in and she told me and my manager that she had found the same bag outside hours before I entered to work. Turns out she was told to leave those outside to see if anyone would take them. So of course nobody takes them.

So I asked my manager if it was alright if I could take these pots and dishes. She told me it was okay as...

1. These were not sold at the store I was working at.

2. Since nobody claimed them, it was abandoned property so I was free to take them.

So now these dishes and pans are stilling in my basement. I plan on selling them at my garage sale once its that time. But I guess to ask the vizzed community...

1. Should I have taken these pots and dishes?

2. Has anyone else taken something that was abandoned/left outside?

You could post a notice and see if the owner really wanted them... give them a number to contact if they lost their dishes. This is just if you want a totally clear conscience on the matter to make sure these were definitely abandoned.

I get some great stuff that my neighbors throw out in the trash... old furniture and whatnot. You know what they say... one person's trash is another person's treasure. I've found perfectly good computer chairs and desks and tables and even entertainment centers just about to be thrown out! No way I'm gonna let that get trashed when I can use them (I'm poor :x )

I see no problem in taking something that's been abandoned. I figure they left it because they didn't want it. Lost and abandoned being two different things, obviously.

That said, I've done the same. Like Crazy Li said, if I see something I like or could use, about to be thrown away, there's no way I'm going to let it just get trashed. lol Hey, any of us would do it for something we really wanted.

Yes, I have. I took an old recliner a long time ago. I had it for a few years before it finally fell apart. The people just left it sitting on the curb after they moved.

Nothing wrong with that at all. When spring cleaning season hits my city they have this big garbage day where people can throw anything they want on the curb to be picked up. I use to go to the richer neighborhoods and I have taken furniture, T.V.s, old computers and one time I got an Atari with a bunch of games. I either used the computers for parts or fixed them up and sold them and I had a friend who could fix T.Vs.

Well yes, when I was around 7 or 8 on a mini-land day care field trip to the pool and then to the park. At the park after we all had played for maybe 2-3 hours and the teaches called the kids back to the bus because it was time to leave, so I was on of the last kids to leave the playground and going towards the bus I stopped by the slide and I noticed a Pokémon Emerald game on the ground, so I picked it up and kept it as my own and till this day I still have it. Now I know what your think why didn't you ask any of the kids there if it was there game?, well to be honest I didn't really think about it at the time, I was just glad to have found a game like that for free.

They're quite a few things I encounter that is left behind by others, like money (mostly coins) and some other stuff.

You tried to find out if they were owned, or if the Salvation Army would take them so in my book it was alright to take them. They left it there for hours, so I personally don't see any harm in it.

I wonder if animals count as part of the "abandoned" thing I can take... cause if so, then yeah... I have taken a LOT of abandoned animals.

My neighbors did that once back when I was living with my mom, I had to hop through their window and get their kittens... ever since then, I've been known to go out of my way to help abandoned animals (mostly felines)
