How many people use home remedies?

There are a lot of things out there that have been used for hundreds or thousands of years as treatments for diseases and ailments that only in the last 50 years we have stopped using because of modern medicine.

However, I doubt too many of us are ignorant of all the side-effects that generally get listed when a new drug is announced.

So the question is how many people use home remedies and if so what sorts of things have you done and how well did they work?

I use home-made beer as a sleep aid.  I'll have a beer when I can't fall asleep and things slow down and I feel restful.  Boom.  sleep.

oh! I love this thread, geeogree!  I'm not a fan of modern medicine, and home remedies are fascinating to me even though I don't know of many.  Since you know so many, would you mind sharing some of your favorites?  I'd share some of I had them to share, but I'd definitely be interested in hearing yours and applying them next time I get the opportunity...

My grandparents use them quite often, I'm starting to as well.

I've cured a few cold sores with toothpaste.

Singelli : I'm not one of those extreme people who refuses to use modern medicine as a solution but I like to try something else before. If I need to I can fall back on something a doctor can help me with but if I can avoid taking medications and what not I would prefer that.

Oh, I don't go to that extreme either! I just think if home remedies work, why not use them?  So you don't have any you want to share?

I used to as my ex used to make her own herbal tinctures and make me take them when I complained I was ill... Because the herbs where stored in alcohol.. It didn't really have any taste apart from the alcohol..

Though I will admit that some of them did actively work.. These days though it seems to be a lost art and people would much rather buy medication from a drug store.

My great grandmother used rubbing alcohol for everything! Any thing from an exposed nerve in her tooth to a cut. The woman only went to the doctor once in her life for a broken hip and she lived to be 94 so maybe she was on to something with the rubbing alcohol.

Most of the home remedies I know of are for home maintenance.

Kids put stickers on the walls and you cant get the sticky stuff off but you want to save yourself from painting?
Use a pencil eraser.

Nail holes in the walls bugging you and you do not have the cash for the right stuff??
(Helps when moving to and fro from apartments.) Use Toothpaste. It works.

Vinegar cleans allot of hard stains like hardwater stains on sinks and clearing out the works in a coffee maker.

Supposedly an apple cut in half left in a car for 8 hours removes the smell of smokers but I dare not bother due to the bugs that that can attract.

Frozen Peas are great for soothing bruizes. Just pull a bag out of the freezer and apply.

Super Glue has been documented to be used to treat cuts but I have never needed my scars to go away quickly. (Look it up before using. I have not been daring enough to try this.)

One of my favourite Books goes over a number of home remedies.
"Survivor" by Chuck Palahnuik.
Plus it's a good story too.

Good Luck To All.
Peace.

I don't use home remedies really. Most home remedies that work well are packaged as drugs, and then sold to people. Aspirin is a good example of that. Occasionally I try home remedies though, but they rarely work.

I don't know any remedies to be honest, aside from marijuana if that's considered a remedy.

I don't care what anyone says, skin color doesn't determine your personality, taste in music movies, ect.

Home remedies are great, though I don't know of many. One I use that seems to work for dang near everything is tea. Headache? Hot tea. Stomach ache? Iced Tea. Depression? Tea.

Also, hot sauce straight from the bottle is good for stuffy noses or phantom shivers. These are ones I've found on myself and they work for me, so I'm not entirely sure if it'll work for anybody else here. Though I encourage them to try.
