What an innovative game! Actraiser combines fun hack n slash action with tedious sim city elements. For the first time ever I actually enjoyed the city building parts. Enix really combined the 2 genres really well. Even though they have nothing to do with each other.

Gameplay A-: The simulation mode feels really polished and its simple user friendly interface makes it easy to learn. That mode is really simple, you simply guide the path of which the city is being built to a monster lair so that the inhabitants can seal it up, as you progress, you level up, get power ups. Which comes in the form of an offering. The action mode, is fun too, but doesn't feel as polished as the simulation mode. Its fun to kill monsters, but you can't change direction when jumping. This means that there are a lot of cheap unwanted hits. The action mode is still fun though, items are inside statues that you destroy. The bosses are easy to hit, but hard to destroy, they are creative though, and have a personality. Overall Actraiser has excellent gameplay.

Graphics B+: Actraiser features well colored stages, and multi-layered scenery. The scaling and rotating effects are only seen every now and then, but the beautiful scenery compromises for that. Every thing has a lot of detail and looks great.

Sound A: The soundtrack is incredible, sure it sounds like a wanna be
symphony something all SNES games have. However the soundtrack is upbeat and matches the atmosphere of the game. The action stage music will get your pulse going. While the simulation mode music has calm, cheerful music.

Addictiveness A+: Usually on this site I play a game for 10 minutes and then pick another. That was not the case for this game. I stayed on this game until I beat. It took a few days, but in the end I really enjoyed it.

Depth B+: Actraiser is not quite as big as later SNES releases, but it took me a couple of days to beat though. So the game is fairly big.

Difficulty medium hard: The simulation mode is quite easy, but the action mode will give you a beating. The cheap jump control will make the game a lot harder.

OVERALL RATING A

Nice review. I absolutely love this game too. It's one of the early games I played on SNES and have played it many times since.

The toughest part I found was actually the very last boss. Everything else was manageable.

*stands in awe* I so have to try this game now. Building AND hack 'n' slash, PLUS monsters? That sounds awesome!

Great review by the way. It was well written, and categorized neatly. It's always nice to be able to know as soon as you see a reviewers name, that it'll be worth your time to read it. Keep it up.
