I almost forgot this morning that we had changed our schedule, and as I eagerly awaited bible study, I realized: there wouldn't be one this morning! haha!

Well, it seems as though it's time for another update.  Despite the fact that we have changed our schedule, we're still managing to get through quite a bit of scripture.  Since the last time I updated this thread, we finished Paul's first letter to Corinth, and then we proceeded with a passage (Mark 12) picked from a different forum's member.

In 1 Corinthians 10-16, we saw a lot of scripture pertaining to the keeping and maintaining a proper relationship with Christ.  The beginning of chapter 10 discusses Israel's proclivity to turn their heads from God and sin while being led by Moses.  God showed them love and mercy and kindness, and they returned His deeds with rebellion and disobedience.  Paul then writes that we should not be like them, and that we should not fall to temptation.  I especially liked verse 13, which read"There is no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that you are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that you may be able to bear it."  I think that many non-believers view Christianity as some fabled ability to withstand sinful thoughts and desires.  Those people don't understand that we are not exempt from the feelings all men and women have, but that we are able to withstand it and not succumb to it.  Even Jesus was tempted during His life here on Earth, and yet He was able to live a perfect life.  As followers of His example, should we not try and do the same?

I've seen and talked to more than a few self-professed Christians who claim "We can sin as often as we want to, and God will forgive us!"  This cry is not only damaging to the integrity of God, but it's also altogether misleading.  People who make this claim do not understand the nature of having a relationship with Christ and are not in the relationship they think they are in.  Once a person accepts Jesus into his or her life truly and honestly, they will not seek to justify their sinful decisions.  They will be tempted, but they will fight that temptation.  We as Christians need to remember that God gives us the means to do so, and that we only glorify God when we do not fall to our fleshy desires.

Paul goes on to say that we should not fall to those deeds and that we should not become idolaters. This does not necessarily mean that, as Christians, we shouldn't bow down to golden calves or any other such God. Although we are not to commit such acts, people all over the world idolize every day items without realizing it. To idolize something is to give it power over your life and actions.  Once you start giving yourself to an addiction for example, you have robbed God of an honest relationship and you have lost your focus.  However, this doesn't mean that one thing which causes me to sin will cause another to sin.

Hence, we must not be careful to offend a brother in sister in Christ who may be convicted of one thing we are not. God's commandments will always remain steadfast, but let's say I had a sister in Christ whom felt convicted of watching a certain show.   I wouldn't go to her house and watch that show or talk about it or carry merchandise advertising it.  To do so would not only be disrespectful and offensive, but in so doing, we would be tempting another Christian to sin against our just and holy God.  Just as I would not advice my blood sister to disobey my father, I would not tempt a sister in Christ to sin against God.

But I've gone off into a tangent.  In the end of this chapter Paul discusses how all of the earth is God's and that we should not eat of food being offered to idols or partake in things which do not glorify God.    Our end goal is never to make men happy, but to tell as many people as possible of how they might be saved from their sin.

Chapter 11 does a lot of discussion on how we should pray and take communion.  I especially liked verse 7 which says "
For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man" and I found verse 10 interesting.  "For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels."  I like verse seven because man is a creation based off the image of God Himself.  Why would we strive to hide ourselves from Him and deny Him the glory of enjoying what He made with His own hands?  Now, of course, these verses were detailing prayer, so verse seven is not saying that wearing any kind of hat is a sin, but that to cover your head during prayer is disrespectful.  The next few verses then detail that long hair is a glory to a woman because God has given it to her as a covering for her own head, and that men should NOT have long hair (verse 14) because it is a shame for him.

I'm not so sure we came to a conclusion about verse 10 even given the context around it... namely the part which says "because of the angels".  I have a vague suspicion on what that might mean, but instead of voicing something I'm uncertain about, I'd like to ask:  Does anyone have an opinion on that verse?  Please do read the verses surrounding it before you answer, because context is everything.

Finally, the end part of this chapter reminds us that taking communion is a very serious thing that is uniquely for believers.  Verse 27 shows us that this is not for people lacking a relationship with Christ: "
Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord."  What a powerful accusation to make!  It's a pretty painful thing to consider and this is why it's so important for pastors to emphasize that only believers should partake of the bread and cup.  This sanctified act is one of devotion and remembrance, so that we might think of the price Christ paid on the cross.  As He fed the multitude (physically) of people before his temporary death, He feeds us spiritually and offers us life through the death of our sins.  When we take communion, we are remember what He did for us and why.  The temporary death of our Savior, so that all might be saved, is not something to take lightly.

play4fun :  Would you mind providing your reflections on the next couple of chapters, since I believe you read them with us?
mrfe :  If you get to it first, I wouldn't complain.

Surgiac : oooooh yay!!!!  I was wondering why we hadn't seen you, and hoping we hadn't scared you away.... and that everything was alright.    i understand life gets busy, but we certainly missed you.    (And I still think your voice is absolutely lovely. hehe.)

By the way, just so you are aware, we did slightly change the schedule.  Tomorrow in the morning session, we will be doing bible study, but in the afternoon we will be filling prayer request.  (We have a list which we split, and we all pray together.)

Surgiac :  *blushes* That would be my fault!  I have everyone in a 'bible study' circle and I invite the circle all at once.  Some things popped up last night that I wasn't expecting though, and I wasn't on the computer at the time.  I'm not sure if play4fun showed up or not, but even if he had, he wouldn't have been able to invite you.  I'm the only one that has all the addresses.  Can I get your permission to send your address to play4fun in the case that I'm away from a computer again?

Also, is anyone else ever going to update this other than me?  ..... :/

play4fun :
mrfe :
You've been promising for quite some time now....

Or....
Pokefreak219 :  Your recordings, maybe?

I have so much I want to say, but I don't want to be the main contributor to this thread.... I don't really have the time for that right now.  XD

I don't want to double post or sandwich post either....

I'd like to make a pull to all members that have been perhaps interested, but forgotten about this or felt nervous about joining. Please don't be. We have a lot of fun and aren't a straight laced bunch. We have people attending bible study from different places in the world as well, and not all of them are vizzed users.

This is a great way to reach out and learn more... and a wonderful way of staying close to God. I know that since I've joined, I've felt much less stressed out about life, and I myself have learned tons.

If you're worried about only making it occasionally, that's just fine! There are certainly no obligations when it comes to attendance, and if you're worried about feeling a little lost, we'll happily tell you what we've been reading about or reflecting on.

Right now we've been reading Hebrews. Hebrews is a wonderful book that speaks a lot on what it means to live a Christ-like life and have that relationship with God. If you have some insight or would just like to join in and sit quietly, we'd love to have you.

Also keep in mind that you don't HAVE to be Christian. We'll love you regardless and still have fun doing it!

Summoning a few from the top of my memory! (Hopefully I spell them all correctly)

Yes, I realize this is a major bump, but I'm continuing a conversation from Singelli and P4F's AA thread.

I'm pretty much good all morning, until about 10 or 11 ET. I could make something work though, if needed. Basically, I'm flexible. What time's best for you all?

BTW, since we're moving the time, that could mean that more people could join...

mrfe :  True!  And I'm severely missing Pokefreak219.    Is it normal for camps to last this long? I mean, she didn't even TELL me about it, which makes the length seem even weirder to me.  I guess I'm just not as good of her friend as I thought I was.  *sniffles*  LOL

I think anything AFTER 7 would be good for me.  Even on my latest nights, I usually get up by 7am.  Maybe we can say 8am (server time) just to be safe?

Or would later mornings be bad for you play4fun?

8 am server time would be more doable for me although at least for the rest of this month, Wednesdays won't be free for me.

nintdsking :  I can't wait!  We were kind of in a slump for a while there, but things have been picking back up again!  I was very happy to meet you, and I can't wait to hold more bible studies with you!  ^.^

EDIT:  Weird... The white box where I'm inputting text does NOT have a 9 in front of your name.  I'm not sure what's up with that.... Odd... (Figured it out.   )

Starting Wednesday, I will be starting an intensive teacher training that will last for 6 weeks. During this time, I will be away from my home from 7 AM to 7 PM EST, and this also does not count travelling hours, which may take another hour for me to get back. Is there a possibility for us to do a late Bible Study, or if anyone is interested in doing this once a week, with more of a topical type Bible study in mind?

play4fun :  Yeesh, I didn't know it was for SIX weeks!!!! : S  That really, really stinks.  Man... I'm gonna miss you crazy bad!  So will vizzed, I'm sure.  As for me, I'm super flexible.  I mean, I have work, yeah, but I don't mind meeting afternoons or mornings, so long as I know what time and what days.

What day would you like the best, and will we use this thread to post a section of the bible to study prior to the weekly meetings?

As for anyone else involved, I don't mind meeting regularly still during the week.
