Woah, look at all of those awesome free games! I'm going to have to try some of these out sometime. I highly recommend Cave Story. It's a must for fans of Metroid or action adventure games. It is a sidescrolling platformer. It's completely free, you just download it from the website. Google "Cave Story" and I'm sure it'll come up. The free to play Browser game I play right now is Pirate Storm. It's cool and I chat with friends and kick a lot of butt on this. It's real-time but there's not too much in the way of strategy.

As for actual PC game... I used to play a lot of Populous: The Beginning. This is a real time strategy game that gives you control of a tribe and it's people. You need to build your tribe in each world and conquer the other tribes on each world. Using you Shaman you can cast different spells throughout the lands. It's pretty cool and a whole lot of fun. There's still a living community for the game too. It's released as freeware and you can join the community free too.

I forgot to mention transformice its a real-time multiplayer game (most multiplayer games that are like this have ghosts) there are no botters and not much hackers with a very active staff team (including behind the scenes mod who is not known to the players)

Cry of Fear is a horror game and I MEAN HORROR, it scared me, I really throw myself into video games and when I do and it's a horror game I get scared off my wit. The controls are a little goofy, but that's also the scary part too, you don't have full control of yourself, so you're more scared of being ambushed and attacked. They have like a list of warnings on the game.

Edit: There are a series of games that base around the secrets of the DeFeo family. It starts with 5 Days a Stranger, and I'm sorry I don't remember the rest of them but if you google it then you can find it. It's a low res independent game but still fun.

You can get minecraft single player for free if you download it and a friend signs in with a paid account, it will download it properly rather than just having the luncher. Your friend only needs to do this once. After that you try to get the username and password wrong and you get an option to play offline!

Also world of Tanks is going to look like a hit. The beta has made it to the Xbox 360 XBLA.

A free game that I've played for about 8 years now and is easily my favorite is Graal Online. It's a game that was intended to be Zelda Online, and was actually named that, until they were sued and changed it. The game is designed so that any player can buy (with Euros) their own servers and do what they please as long as it's not against the rules. There are several public run servers that have free to play access with the only restriction in not being able to join factions/gangs/businesses/etc. 

I play on the server Era because it is my personal favorite, which has been made into a modern gun influenced game with a game play of the original Zelda trying to dodge those monsters who shoot the balls at you. 

You can find it at graalonline.com and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Maple Story is a really cute game. It may look a bit childish but once you get into it it's actually quite fun! It's totally worth a try :3
